Music From Memory

On Retinae

80s Japanese pop GOLD - both versions of 'On Retinae' on 12" for the first time. Talk about an end of night finisher..oooh eee.. full info: Music From Memory’s third 12” release features two versions of the track ‘On Retinae’ by the Japanese pop duo Dip In The Pool. With support from friend Yasuaki Shimizu (AKA Mariah) on clarinet, the track is pure end of the night pop perfection and something of a lost classic.Originally appearing on Dip In The Pool’s 1989 LP of the same name, ‘On Retinae’ was also pressed in Hong Kong as a 50 copies only promo 12” release, the existence of which remained unknown even to the band themselves until recently. True to that original promo release Music From Memory have chosen to present both the ‘West’ (English Version) and ‘East’ (Japanese Version) again in 12” format.Blending a unique sense of music and style, Dip In The Pool created a refined sense of dreamy minimal pop formed by the productions of Tatsjui Kimura and the ethereal, floating vocals of Miyako Koda. Something of a fashion icon and a much-photographed model in Japan, Miyako is also an actress and has appeared in a number of Japanese feature films.Since their debut LP on the UK’s Rough Trade label in 1985, the group gained something of a cult following and have continued to record and perfom live, with this 12” coming ahead of a much-deserved compilation of the groups work which is to be released by Warner Brothers digitally and on CD later this year.

Walk Alone

a propos:
The subject of Music From Memory’s latest compilation release is the elusive and mysterious Philadelphian musician Napoleon Cherry (aka Cool Waters). Oddball funk biz TIP! In the late 80’s and early 90’s Cherry privately released two LP’s and an EP which form the basis of this retrospective, alongside an unreleased cut ‘When You Had The Chance’ which was recently released on 12” in collaboration with US label PPU.Recorded with a very DIY aesthetic and a strong presence of gospel and RnB, Cherry’s unique take on soul and funk music, reflect a rawness that stands in contrast to the slick, over-produced soul of that era. With appearances by jazz musicians such as the late celebrated saxophonist Byard Lancaster, who coincidentally played with MFM’s previous compilation subject Vito Ricci, Napoleon’s music seems to defy any clear categorisation. From cocktail jazz funk to intergalactic synth workouts to melancholy bedroom soul, Napoleon’s use of synths and drum computers, though perhaps unknowingly, also seem to strongly echo elements of early house music.

Clouds

a propos:
Music From Memory's fourth release sees the Amsterdam based label taking an exciting sidestep with the release of “Clouds”, an album of contemporary music recorded in spring 2014. “Clouds” is the debut album of Gaussian Curve, a collaboration between Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin, Land Of Light’s Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk (also know as Young Marco). Each of them established in their own rights, the three musicians from Italy, UK and the Netherlands, came together during a weekend long recording session in April of this year.Without preconceived ideas and developed around often purely intuitive improvised jams, the eight tracks on the album are all 'one take' live recordings. With Gigi Masin on Rhodes and piano, Jonny Nash on guitar, melodica, synths and trumpet and Marco Sterk on synths, rhythmic structures and production duties, the three of them succeed in developing a musical language all of their own.Recorded in the heart of Amsterdam's Red Light district, the album reflects the unusually warm Spring and the buzz from the open windows that filled the derelict downtown studio space during that particular weekend. Whilst on the more introvert late night compositions the music quietly soars, reflecting the brooding melancholy of an evening in that particular part of the city. With a heartfelt simplicity “Clouds” is a record of an inspired meeting of unique souls and unique surroundings.
