French Disco Boogie Sounds Vol 4: 1977-1991

photo:
a propos:
The motor hasn’t had time to cool down and the belt drive is feeling the fatigue. But Charles Maurice is the kind of DJ who just can’t let a turntable rest. After steaming up the slipmat with three sexy compilations of French Boogie, Charles Maurice is back with Volume 4.In the late 70s and early 80s, while France was still firmly tuned into variety-show pop, a few enlightened ears and souls picked up the hypnotic beat of funk from across the Atlantic. These first warrior monks spread the good word in discotheques, jumped on newly available frequencies to fill the airwaves and, in some cases, took up instruments themselves to unabashedly build on the U.S. model. In a short decade stretching from the late 70s to the late 80s – just a blip on the scale of music history – they turned out material in abundance. Lush productions with colorful covers, groovy typeface and creative photo shoots…But first and foremost, they made music weaned on, spoon-fed and imbued with funk. Music defined by a groove with a robotic beat (Djeneba) that clearly hears hip-hop banging on the door, where layers of synthesizers, handclaps (Eric Chotteau), horns and African percussion line up and follow the all-powerful lead of the swelling slap bass (Cyrill). Music that tells everyday stories, both humorous and lovelorn (Serge Delisle), and often packed with pheromones just waiting to be released on the dance floor or sofa (Chris O’Hara). Shaped by synthetic textures, these productions are also spiced with Caribbean and Creole arrangements that reflect the West Indies’ critical contribution to French Boogie (Wai Kop, Acayouman). With his immaculate tailoring, slicked back hair and clipped moustache, Charles Maurice has once again transformed himself into a HiFi stylus to explore the groove traced by this specifically French musical style. From 45 to 33 rpm, he has traveled the black spiral to bring us a new selection that proudly features a number of rarely heard pieces and even an unreleased track by Marco Attali. True to form, Monsieur Charles carefully crafted this fourth volume from his personal collection of impeccably restored and mastered vinyl recordings.Charles Maurice, where French elegance meets uncompromising musical taste.

Work It Out/Til I Found You

photo:
a propos:
For many Disco and House music producers and listeners, Leroy Burgess might be one of the most important figures and inspiration, however being clearly quite unknown to the mass. Born and raised in Harlem, his musical knowledge was picked up informally through his mother (a classically trained soprano) and the infrequent family reunion with his mom's cousin, legendary Philly soul arranger/producer Thom Bell. It resulted in a 50 years musical career, which started in the late 60s within the Black Ivory band, under the shoulder of famous producer Patrick Adams. The list of project and artists he’s contributed to whether as a singer, musician, arranger, writer or producer is then incredible: Inner Life, Dazzle, Logg, Aleem, High Frequency, Change, Universal Robot Band, Rick James, Ben E. King, Eddie Kendricks, Narada Michael Walden are just a few of them. His influence to the Disco and Boogie musical movement is quite unequaled, and in the 90s he became also part of the Garage and House movement, collaborating with acts such as Blaze, Glenn Underground, and Cassius.Since 2016 and a special gig at the festival “Nuits Sonores” in Lyon (France), where he was invited by MCDE, Leroy Burgess started touring Europe, backed by a band composed of musicians from the French city. He says himself that it’s part of “the best musicians he had the honor to play with live”. In 2018 at the New Morning in Paris, Pascal Rioux from Favorite Recordings, could confirm this feeling, while he also realized knowing most of these musicians, who collaborated to project from the label such as Mr Day or The Dynamics. There was not much more needed to launch the idea of some Leroy Burgess’ new recordings with the band, reviving the 80s analog production golden-age.Today Favorite Recordings is thrilled to present Work It Out / Til I Found You, new 2 tracks single by Leroy Burgess & Saving Coco, produced and composed by The Bernard Brothers and Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart. The Bernard Brothers is a Paris/London based production duo comprised of Elliott and Nevil Bernard. Elliott (aka Seiji Ono) and Nevil (aka Koji Ono) are also involved in running London reissue label, Melodies International. Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart, is a famous French producer, who’s proven over the past 15 years, his place amongst the finest producers of groove music in all genres through various projects such as Voilaaa, Mr President, or Uptown Funk Empire to name just a few.

Planets

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Two years after an acclaimed first album, Al Sunny and Favorite Recordings proudly present Planets, carrying on their collaboration and bringing it to another level.Al Sunny is a young and talented singer/musician/composer emerging from the French soul music scene. During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. He quickly matured the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Giving birth to the majority of his compositions through his guitar, he always seeks to bring his songs’ melody to the forefront. During his studies he kept experiencing live performing on different scenes and confirmed his choice for a musical career, while also meeting many brilliant musicians, including Florian Pellissier, who later introduced him to Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings. It resulted in 2017 in Time to Decide release, a dazzling first album establishing Al Sunny’s music and writing style, looking towards the 70s and 80s Westcoast movement, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk flavors. Built on the same influences, Planets is made of 8 new compositions (including a CD and digital bonus), and is clearly a continuation of its cadet, asserting Al Sunny’s talent and singing skills.Fully recorded live and analogic in Paris, this new album also stands out by an impressive level of production, faithful to some classics of the genre. Mixing catchy melodies, soulful vocals, warm and heavy bass, strong beat and beautiful guitars and keyboards harmonies, Planets just perfectly meets the AOR and Modern-Soul golden era standards.

Tanger

photo:
a propos:
Dwight Druick’s born in Montreal to a professional gambler and an ex-Radio City Rockette. One of five children, he grew up in a family buoyed by music and beleaguered by the vagaries of miscalculated risk. After attaining a McGill University bachelor’s degree in Art History, Dwight fully embraced both music and risk by traveling to London, where he signed a contract with Pye Records and Joe Cocker’s management company. The ensuing record, Druick & Lorange was released to critical acclaim and relative success. After returning to Canada, Dwight recorded two albums with Phil Vyvial: Midnight and Minuit. Recorded with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section in Alabama, the duo’s work achieved airplay success in Quebec and across Canada. Dwight subsequently released his first French language solo album, Tanger, released in 1980 by the Canadian label, Bobinason.Today quite hard to find in its original version, Tanger is first of all an incredibly solid album, clearly underrated and deserving more credit. Mostly known by collectors and DJs for the stunning cover of Toto’s classic hit, “Georgy Porgy”, which was produced and arranged with the help of George Thurston (Boule Noire), it includes many other tasty titles, with amongst them another fine rendition of “Open Your Eyes” by The Doobie Brothers. In fact, with its brilliant mix of Modern-Soul, Disco and AOR styles, the whole album is already considered by many connoisseurs as a classic, and clearly a must have for anyone enjoying this musical blend.Never reissued on vinyl until now, there was not much more needed at Favorite Recordings to make it happened. Officially licensed to Dwight Druick, who was unfortunately not able to provide the original tapes, Tanger has been perfectly restored and remastered by Frank Merritt, at The Carvery, London. CD and digital edition will also come with “Georgy Porgy (Version Disco)” as a bonus track.

Pursuing their explorations of international Funk and Disco music, Favorite Recordings and Patchworks present us Voilaaa.Following a first 2 tracks single acclaimed this summer and clearly revealing the Afro-Disco inspiration of this new experience, here comes Voilaaa’s first album, titled On te l’avait dit. After his projects such as The Dynamics, Mr President, Mr Day, Patchworks Galactic Project, or Taggy Matcher, the insatiable French producer therefore returns to his first love and specialty, Disco music, staring this time at the African and Caribbean influences. The 10 tracks of the album are instantly up to expectations, chaining hit after hit tirelessly, and offering brilliant collaborations with Sir Jean, Pat Kalla, Renaud Bilombo, or label mates Hawa and Fouley Badiaga.

Nacao Africa

photo:
a propos:
The turntable’s tonearm waves and indicates the West direction, as if it wanted to tear and take off for Brazil? It’s alright; it's just playing Nação África, new single by Camarão Orkestra, the most Brazilian of Parisian bands.Sinewy bass and battery pulsating, it’s stitched to the dancefloor that "Nação África" spreads its groove. And it's with a variety of keyboards and synthesizers that the tight production maintains a level of constant motion, surrounded by the burning riffs of the brass section and Amanda Roldand's refreshing vocals.Anywhere close to a good record, you’d usually find Patchworks hanging around. He satiates here his compulsive remix addiction, first by loosening the pressure of the bass, giving us more fresh air, and covering the mix with airy synth patches. Then with a dub version where he puts vocals and instruments inside echo chambers and effects corridors of different scales. The bass becomes rubbery, the beat is robotized and, slowly, an electro vibes seizes the title.Nação África announces the return of Camarão Orkestra in the crates, just an appetizer before a new album… Or two…

Atemporal

photo:
a propos:
Born in 1949 in Recife (Brazil), Roberto De Melo Santos, despite a very light discography, is among the true icons of the Brazilian Soul music under his artist alias, Di Melo. He s indeed only needed an eponymous album, released in 1975 on Odeon, to assert himself as a star in his native country, but also as a legend for all collectors and connoisseurs of the world. More than 40 years after its release, this famous album sells for several hundred euros in its original version, and even for the few reissues that were offered. Not very active since then, Di Melo however returned in 2016 with the album O Imorrível, released on the Brazilian label Casona Produções.It is then that a year later, came a meeting with the French group Cotonete, that Florian Pellissier, founding member and keyboard within the band tells us about: “On tour in Brazil with Cotonete, we had a few days off in Sao Paulo and I really hoped to make a collaboration with an important artist or band from the Brazilian funk scene. We had thought of Marcos Valle, Meta Meta or Ed Motta... but Rafaela Prestes our Brazilian "sound ingineer-genious" told me she d worked with Di Melo for his recent comeback and gave me his number. No sooner said than done, as I m a huge fan of Di Melo. The next day he arrived at our house with Jo, his wife, and Gabi, his daughter. He takes the guitar in front of us and gives us a private show of 3 hours… we cried the tears of joy. He had 400 original songs never recorded, a gold mine. On the same night, we started working the arrangements for 2 days, followed by a rehearsal and two small gigs in Sao Paulo. Immediately after, we recorded in the magical Epsilon B studio. This album is the summary of this moment, of these 5 days of madness spent together between “the best band in the world” and the legend Roberto Di Melo… Simple, beautiful, Brazilian-French, human music…”Today, Atemporal found its final version in collaboration with Favorite Recordings and is proudly presented as what we believe will become the genuine long-awaited follow-up to the classic Di Melo s LP.

Tu Mens Devant Moi

auteur:

Voilaaa is one of the many projects led and produced by Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart, who’s proven over the past 15 years, his place amongst the finest producers of groove music in all genres. This time exploring the wide spectrum of the African and Tropical Disco scene, he received a massive international support for Voilaaa’s two first album, On te l’avait dit, and Des Promesses.Following to that success and pursuing the same direction combining of the festive, yet sometime futile nature of Disco, and the instinctive, deep, sometimes rough nature of African music, Voilaaa’s now presenting a new 4 tracks EP, which will be followed later this year by a new LP.Another killer package where Patchworks teams up again with longtime partner Pat Kalla, but also with newcomers to the project, like here Ramatou Traore and Ayuune Sule, both bringing great African languages vocals to “Tu mens devant moi” and “Woman Can Do”.
