Shot Out

auteur:

a propos:
BACK IN STOCKIt all started in a local club in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where Mojo and Spider played in their first group together, Zodiac, in the mid 70s. Spider played lead guitar, and Mojo held the brass section.Sam "Spider" Rice was also the music director for a vocal group called "La Pinch" which included vocalist Gary Pinchom (Pinch). As the 80s approached La Pinch was looking for a new sound. After relocating to the East Coast "The Pinch" was born.New York and Jersey was quite a change. Spider wanted to write a song to address the drug abuse he was seeing all around him. "Shot Out was a street term we used to describe someone with an excessive drug habit", recalls Spider. "We built a voice box from a horn driver, a couple of switches, and some tubing".They had some money stashed from a Zodiac gig and picked up a Prophet 5 and Roland drum machine. After recording the track in 1981, the song was mastered at the legendary Power Plant in NYC. That would prove to be the major limitation for the release, since they were out of money now and could only afford to press 200 copies of the 7".Distributed in Texas and locally on the East Coast, "Shot Out" would be the only release from The Pinch... UNTIL NOW! Re-mastered for the first time on 12" vinyl, this 80s funk masterpiece is finally back on wax.

Let's Ride

auteur:

It's well known that People's Potential Unlimited boss Andrew Morgan has some serious crate digging skills. Even so, he continues to amaze with the obscurity and quality of the releases he chooses to reissue. Serious collectors have long sought out "Let's Ride" by guitarist Willie Lee Jnr under his occasional Junei alias. Originally released on 7" back in 1987, it's a killer chunk of synthesizer-heavy electrofunk blessed with some serious eyes-closed guitar solo action. Flipside "You Must Go On" - originally the A-side of the '87 release - is fantastic, too, offering a near perfect blend of sun-kissed Balearic attitude and smooth '80s soul grooves.

Openin' Up

photo:
a propos:
Pressing issues may have delayed the Pender Street Steppers' debut on Mood Hut Recordings, but this fresh single on PPU should more than plug the gap. Those who may have heard the Mood Hut outfit's Life In The Zone cassette last year will know what to expect: "Openin' Up" combines jittery conga percussion with rubbery bass and a positively uplifting sense of melody that nevertheless errs on the grubbier side of the spectrum, while "M Flight" is even more summery in it outlook, as a humorous '80s-inspired piece of melodic sampling propels its blissful chords and carefree bassline. As with all Mood Hut-affiliated releases, this won't last long...

Eternal Love

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Long standing soul man Willie (or Hill as he usually operates on PPU) returns with three more timeless soul joints. "Eternal Love" is a soul monolith of Vandross proportions as Willie belts his guts up over a slippery synth boogie groove, classic 80s falsetto harmonies and brick-melting synth-toms. "Talking On A Funky Note" takes us to the early 90s with a Bobby Brown-style new-jack sound while "Over The Hump" brings us to an inspiring climax with lyrics of intestinal fortitude so heavy they'd make a world champion life coach blush. Perfect for all training/chips down montages.
