Christians Catch Hell: Gospel Roots 1976-79

photo:
a propos:
Utterly magnificent, sublimely soulful survey of the Gospel Roots label, subsidiary of the mighty TK Records at the height of the Miami Sound.A&R was co-ordinated by Gospel legends Ira Tucker — from the Dixie Hummingbirds — and Ralph Bass, veteran producer with Savoy, King and Chess. The label was run by Timmy Thomas, who had recently smashed with Why Can’t We Live Together, for another TK spin-off, Glades. Operations were overseen by Henry Stone himself, unlikely King of Disco, who had recorded a young Ray Charles, and pushed forward James Brown. They drew in artists from all over the US, from St. Louis, Columbus, Memphis, Brooklyn, Cabrini Green in Chicago: unknowns like Camille Doughty, reluctant to jeopardise her job at GM (‘Generous Motors’) in Detroit, and huge-sellers like the revered Brooklyn All Stars, who started out on Peacock in 1958.Choral belters, deep ballads, harmony quartets, epic city-blues, gritty funk, powerhouse female soul… Killer-diller Philly like a scorching version of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes’ Wake Up Everybody; and Jean Austin’s raw Spirit Free, co-written by Ronnie Dyson, produced by Jesse James at Future Gold. Chicago Sound like The Fantastic Family Aires — named after the family’s furniture store on North Cicero, but reminiscent of the Staple Singers at their best — through to the full-blown glory of The Fountain Of Life Joy Choir, led by Marvin Yancy from The Independents, and featuring Natalie Cole… Singers like Versie Mae Gibson, from the Jordans, by rights up there with Irma, Etta and Ree… Bangers 100%-guaranteed to find their way into Theo Parrish sets; and mortal delirium for the prissiest of soul and gospel purists.Beautifully presented, with a 12”-square, full-colour, sixteen-page booklet of photos and original artwork — and truly outstanding notes, including insightful new interviews across the board; mastered at Abbey Road.

Kaytronik/Yoruba Soul Mixes

photo:
a propos:
Seven Davis Jr recruits two close friends and kindred spirits to rework cuts from his debut album Universes: house music titans Karizma (aka Kaytronik) and Osunlade (aka Yoruba Soul). Basement Boy Karizma takes on "Sunday Morning" delivering a high octane "Ruff Kut" dub and a choppier Baltimore Club tinged "Love Break" dub. On the flip, Osunlade gives "Welcome Back" his trademark exquisite touch.

Mr Bongo

photo:
a propos:
26 RED HOT SKIN SLAPPIN' BONGO BASHIN' LATIN JAZZ N' MAMBO BANGERS - The phrase 'living legend' is undoubtedly overused but there can be few people more deserving of such an accolade than Jack Costanzo. Born on the 24th September 1919, Costanzo is arguably the most significant percussionist of the modern era. Playing with many key orchestras, leading his own band, appearing in numerous TV shows and films and tutoring bongo playing to the stars, more than any other figure Jack Costanzo brought percussion, specifically Latin percussion and his trademark bongos, to widespread attention. But he wasn't merely a popularist, he was in turn revered by his peers and critics alike for his natural ability, invention, and perhaps most importantly his sheer versatility. He became known as 'Mr. Bongo' (first coined by jazz critic Leonard Feather), and the tag could hardly be more appropriate.Latin music and its influence in general is often criminally overlooked in music history, but as a white Italian American who rose to prominence playing Latin music at the height of the mambo craze of the 1950s, Jack Costanzo has probably even more neglected. But hopefully not for too much longer as this 23 track retrospective seeks to redress the balance and give him the special treatment his spectacular career deserves. Showcasing many of the musical highlights of his mid-50s peak and featuring extensive liner notes based on new interviews with Costanzo himself, 'Mr. Bongo' serves as a perfect introduction to the many who may not yet be aware of Jack Costanzo, as well as providing those who are already fans with the ultimate collection of his work.· All tracks digitally restored from original sources· Deluxe double-gatefold 2LP vinyl WITH FREE 'HOW TO PLAY THE BONGOS' 20 PAGE BOOKLET INSIDE!· CD with 16 page colour booklet· Original cover art from Derek Yaniger· Both formats contain pics & notes provided personally by Jack Costanzo himself

Island Series : Martinique

photo:
a propos:
Heavy-hitting dancefloor Cadence from Martinique. A classic of the genre from MB, with snappy drums and bass, Rhodes and saxophone. Polished, jazzy and hard-swinging.None other than The Hamsters on the flip, tiny gnashers bared with carnival-style ferocity. Thumping bass and insistent drums, plus a heavy dose of Haitian-influenced guitars, equals sure-fire party-starter.

Dancin' & Prancin' (Expanded Edition)

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Candido Cameron was a Cuban percussion maestro who had played with luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Count Basie throughout his illustrious musical career which started in 1952. Fast forward to 1979 and Candido finds himself caught up in the Disco boom that had engulfed his adopted New York City. Feeling he could add his trademark quick-fire Conga and Bongo playing to Disco's straight 4 x 4 syncopated rhythm he cut some records with legendary NYC label Salsoul. The fruits of this partnership were 2 full length LP's and a handful of 12" singles that changed the face of underground Disco. The first of these two LP's made for Salsoul was the truly epic "Dancin' & Prancin" containing the all time classic "Jingo" which has been sampled, edited, re-configured and coveted by too many names to mention! It's a killer funky Disco version of master Nigerian drummer Olatunji's 1969 percussion suite of the same name, Salsoul style. The LP also contains one of the deepest Disco records of all time, "Thousand Finger Man" a testament to Candido's percussion prowess and a spacey, beautiful voyage that has left more than an indelible mark on modern House music, often being cited as a huge influence by artists such as Masters At Work and more. This new re issue contains all 4 tracks from the original LP plus this new expanded edition contains lost rarities and extended versions of "Jingo" and "Thousand Finger Man". All fully re mastered for 2015 and re released in conjunction with Salsoul.

Tartare

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
As summer fades and the days get shorter, Souleance have been hard at work in the kitchen cooking up their new EP 'Tartare'. The French production duo of Fulgeance (Ed Banger / Musique Large) and Soulist (What The Funk? / The P Show) have delivered another EP of surefire party starters, taking the sample-heavy template of previous releases, and adding a deeper disco-house edge to stunning effect. The 8-track EP opens with 'Hustle' - a clear statement of intent from Souleance - the shuffling synth-heavy percussion signposting the slight shift in direction, but with it's sights aimed firmly at the dance floor. The track also features regular video collaborator Emile Sacre on keys and vocoder, this time in his music production guise as VECT. Many of you will be familiar with 'Secoue' (released earlier this summer as a digital only single). The Kompa-influenced track has become a DJ's favourite over the festival season and is now finally available on vinyl. Elsewhere 'Ratatouille' starts in more conventional Souleance territory with an infectious horn-led break, before developing into a Giorgio Moroder-inspired disco stomper. Also of note is the elastic bassline-fuelled 'I Got It', which displays a lightness of touch and subtlety rarely seen in dance music. This more mature sound, fused with the DJ-friendly identity of earlier releases shows the progression the duo have made since their debut back in 2009. The artwork that has been a feature of Souleance's releases is present again, with Alice Dufay providing stunning illustration in her idiosyncratic style. The EP also features two remixes - Debruit remixes the title track, blending the Souleance sound and putting his unique stamp on it - in his own words 'an imaginary place where ancient West Africa cohabits with 80's New York'. Finally Dutch newcomer Uffe takes on 'New York', retwisting the keys to create an MPC-style house groove - the perfect conclusion to Souleance's best EP yet.
