Another new signature on Heavenly Sweetness, the leftfield duet Baron Retif & Concepcion Perez. They already released 3 ep on Musique Large label and did remixes for Laurent Garnier or Jacaranda Muse, and produced some beats for french rapper Rocé or Coeff.Half studio-rats, half live voodoos, the duet makes a music which did not choose beween to dream and dance, explore and relax.A new direction for Baron Rétif & Concepción Perez as their trademark minimal funk flow and singular cosmic hip-hop, is mixed with future dub...Instead of many beatmakers, their music is playing live, Baron Retif on drums and sequences and Concepcion Perez on the keyboards. They mix in their music their large musical influences from root reggae to modern beats, infused with soul and jazz.

Spies Are Watching Me

auteur:

Pursuing their explorations in the vast corridors of international Funk and Disco music, Favorite Recordings and Bruno « Patchworks » Hovart present us Voilaaa. With this first single composed of 2 tracks that clearly reveal the Afro-Disco inspiration of this new experience, Favorite also expands its new series of Disco 12inch singles recently launched with several fine reissues, but this time with one of its special homemade production recipe.Under the imprint of the label and after their long years of collaboration in the achievement of projects such as The Dynamics, Mr President, Mr Day, Patchworks Galactic Project, or Taggy Matcher, the insatiable French producer therefore returns to his first love and specialty, Disco music, staring this time at the African and Caribbean influences.Indeed, as everywhere in the 70s and 80s, Funk and Disco movements were extremely influential in these regions, as it’s been very well highlighted by some specialized labels for years with multiple reissues. France and its African and Caribbean communities, was no exception and was also nurturing many productions of the genre. In most cases, the combination of the festive, yet sometime futile nature of Disco, and the instinctive, deep, sometimes rough nature of African music, sounds like a perfect balance.Aiming to find back this energy and specific sound, Patchworks quickly began producing a few tracks; Using his unique and ruling beats and bass lines as foundations, this time he dresses all with guitars, keyboards and brass distorted with vintage and DIY effects pedals and boxes. A field game dustier and less flamboyant than the traditional and flashy Disco’ codes, but perfectly suited for Patchworks, who seems at the top of his game and to have fun like crazy facing this new challenge. With a very dynamic music scene around him in Lyon, where there is no shortage of artists with African origins, he decided to surround himself with singers from the region, even if it means to accompany them on unusual musical paths. A more than successful bet with a result surprising of authenticity, as it’s unveiled by these first two titles alongside Sir John and Pat Kalla, both from a musical background as rich than different. With an album planned for the end of the year, that promises to be as explosive and magnetic, Patchworks and Favorite Recordings make a strike again and confirm them a little more if needed, as the true warrant of the modern dancefloors’ loyalty, to the spirit of their mythical ancestors … Voilaaa tout (Thaaat’s all)!!

Patchwork

Following the success of "Seventy Seven", Gerald Bonnegrace returns with another super-immersive journey into jazz and Afro tickled roots. Taking off where the last album left us, our focus is squared plainly on the authenticity of the sound, production and arrangement. From the Bob James' motif right at the end of "Once Upon A Time" to the more languid Hathaway-style narrative of "Manikou" via the heavy freneticism of "Jam Session" and Vadim-esque French hip-hop licks of "One Nation", there's much more consistency than the album title suggests.

Too Tough

photo:
a propos:
BBE present the second release under BBE Africa, Too Tough / I'm Not Going To Let You Go from Rim and Kasa / Rim and The Believers.Following hot on the heels of our well-received reissue of his first album, Rim Arrives, we now present the two other key records that have made this a cult figure for lovers of both African music and ‘disco’ in its widest sense. Too Tough, a superb three track EP from 1982, on Sum-Sum Records, was credited to Rim and Kasa, whilst he issued the cracking 12” I’m Not Going To Let You Go as Rim And The Believers for Harmony Records the following year.Too Tough kicks off with Shine The Ladies, an epic Afrodisco jam in call and response format, with the female lead vocals (Ms. Anita Berry) prompting a series of replies from the backing vocalists, setting the scene for a series of exciting solos set against a backdrop of punchy horns and swirling synths, tenor sax, guitar, drums (introduced with chants of ‘Play me some drums!’) and vibes all take a turn before the track fades out, clocking in just short of nine minutes. Next up is Love Me For Real, reminiscent of August Darnell with its girlie vocals and Latin flavour, ending with a mad swirl of synths and Rim’s own vocals. And lastly, I’m A Songwriter is cosmic Afro-reggae, bringing to mind Roy Ayers in his Fela phase, given a mad punk-funk twist … this one has to be heard to be believed! The mood changes with I’m Not Going To Let You Go, which eschews the female chorus for an altogether mellower, instrumental ride, veering from out-there cosmic synth vibes to loungey jazz piano. It’s original flip, Peace of Mind, raw Afro-boogie track with a male vocal, is also included. Those of you who had been searching in vain for Rim’s oeuvre for some years now having had it handed to you on a platter (well, two platters, actually), will be pleased to know that there is yet more material from the man Rim Kwaku Obeng to come from us at BBE … watch out for the digital-only release of four previously unreleased cuts from this legend of Afro-disco, taken from a long-lost acetate!
