I Didn't Mean To Turn You On

a propos:
After overwhelming request we decided to unearth Moniquea’s classic cover of “Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” and dance floor heater “Break No Hearts”. Originally only released on cassette in 2015 as a part of our “Is This The Future” show series, “Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” is a testament to the supreme workmanship and masterful duo of Moniquea and XL Middleton, these two didn’t cover this song, they gave it the treatment! Moniquea pours herself in and holds nothing back, electrifying the classic with her seductive voice and unmatched intensity, even though she didn’t mean to, you’re definitely going to be turned on! “Break No Hearts” continues the dance floor intensity with Moniquea’s masterful original songwriting and ability to spill game over songs like no one else can! Her lyrics and seductive voice will not only level up your life, they will level up the dance floor as they lay over the uptempo, silky smooth, electrofunk freestyle groove that sits on three wheels with that G Funk lean-created by the one and only funk surgeon XL Middleton! Guaranteed not to break your 45’s box big heart, and burn up the dance floor worldwide!

Blackwavefunk

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Moniquea established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 MoFunk Records debut album Yes No Maybe. For her followup, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synthpop sounds of the 80’s. Thus, the album title: Blackwavefunk.Listening to Blackwavefunk feels like sweeping across a spectrum of sounds and feels. The lead single, “Checkin’ Out,” channels the ‘street funk’ sound that Moniquea’s native California is known for, while “I Just Don’t Know” slows the pace and mood to offer up one of the few true downtempo love songs of the genre. “When You Are Away,” “Make You Feel My Love” (feat. Brian Ellis) and “Why Can’t You See” offer sleek, sexy modern soul soundscapes while the Turquoise Summers-produced “Knew It” thumps with a menacing g-funk bounce. Finally, the wave in Blackwavefunk reveals itself on the eccentric “Check Your Sources,” an anthem about sordid speculation and grievous gossip, over a musical backdrop that sounds like 1999-era Prince and DPG somehow achieved perfect sonic fusion. The album’s closer, “Famous,” takes it further and gives a glimpse of what it might sound like if Bernie Worrell played synth basslines for OMD or Pet Shop Boys.

A Certain Way (Remixes)

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Moniquea’s “A Certain Way,” as first heard on her “Yes No Maybe” album on MoFunk Records, has been remixed by some of the heavyweights in the modern and future funk scenes - Teeko, known for his intergalactic funk expeditions with partner B. Bravo on Starship Connection, and XL Middleton (with Eddy Funkster), who was responsible for the production of the original version. Teeko’s remix molds the original into an even more upbeat incarnation, riding the line between funk and soulful house, maintaining a deep, thumping rhythm with spaced out chords and leads sitting on top. The XL Middleton + Eddy Funkster remix goes in another direction, creating an electrofunk vibe akin to that of legends such as Egyptian Lover, melding fierce 808 drums and sparse synth work with dubbed out slices of Moniquea’s original vocal performance.
