Can You See What I'm Trying To Say

photo:
a propos:
Lascelle 'Lascelles' Gordon - the driving force behind Vibration Black Finger – astonishes us yet again with a magnificent second album. Once more his inspiration is drawn from the obscure spiritual jazz collectives of the 1970s where he employs a vast array of like-minded collaborators to create a listening experience infused with an ever-present undercurrent of personal expression and cultural empowerment that's as enriched with ideas as it is progressive in its form.Having earned his chops as founding member of the Brand New Heavies, Campag Velocet and Heliocentric World, Lascelle's latest album Can You See What I'm Trying to Say bursts with energy and vivid contrasts, flowing effortlessly between beat-laden grooves, oscillating improvisations, soulful recitations, audio verité and moody atmospherics. The album drops like a post-hip-hop reimagining of foundational genres, with a prayer to the future.''Can You See What I'm Trying to Say' is a quote from Marion Brown, the great alto saxophonist' explains Gordon. 'The album was put together over the last three years, not in the conventional way of going into the recording studio with musicians, but starting from ideas I had on various formats (cassettes, mini disc, DATs & reel to reel). I also used field recordings. I did a lot of home recording with long time musical friends Ben Cowen & Diana Gutkind, some of them going back 20 years. The voices of my nieces (heard on Law of the Universe) were recorded 25 years ago. 'Only in a Dream' and 'Empty Streets' are the only songs that were recorded live in the studio.' 'I was blown away by the New Life Trio 'Empty Streets' (from 1978) and was fascinated by the vocals' continues Lascelles. 'I always thought it would be great to cover this tune'. Such is the power of this song, it's used to open the album, with vocalist Ebony Rose turning in a thoroughly haunting vocal performance. While not a concept album as such, Lascelles has nonetheless conceived and presented Can You See What I'm Trying to Say to be heard as a complete listening experience, with each track blending into the next, resulting in a seamless expression of music.Following 'Empty Streets', some instrumental interludes segue into a dimensional drift of beats, space synths, horns and electronics; there's a vocal reprise of 'Acting For Liberation', sung with gusto by Maggie Nichols, and then there's the album's momentous finale, 'Only In A Dream', which takes off as an ominous drone before a delicious bassline from the late Ken Kambayashi transforms it into an intense, soaring epic which finally descends onto another world. In a career spanning several decades, Lascelle Gordon remains an omnivorous musical force, whether as DJ, collaborator or radio broadcaster. As amply demonstrated on Can You See What I'm Trying to Say, he refuses to rest on his laurels and continues to impress with music that is as rich, vital and contemporary as anything he's done before, covering an incredible amount of musical ground in the process.

photo:
a propos:
Ryota Nozaki(Jazztronik) has just launched a new project called “Musilogue”.Musilogue is a cultural music project by musicians who are active in many music scenes. At the moment 60 musicians are already involved in Musilogue. We believe professional musicians are artists and artisans .We can create new kinds of high quality music through our collaboration. To record this music and to introduce a new style of working for musicians is Musilogue’s biggest theme. On the other hand Musilogue has a plan to start teaching music to people who want to enjoy music more and also to become professional.Musilogue has released its 1st album “Elephant and a barbar” by Bass player Ichiro Fujiya and Sax player Takeshi Kurihara. This album was originally made for selling at venues where they would play.Due to popular demand Musilogue decided to release it more widely.Ichiro Fujiya is an amazing bass player who has supported Jazztronik for 10 years and also other Japanese pop music artists.Takeshi Kurihara started off in the underground scene and since then he has supported many artists like Soil&pimp sessions,Kyoto Jazz Sextet and Jazztronik.Ryota Nozaki(Jazztronik) plays piano and Rhodes and has composed 2 tunes (8)(9) on this album.Effective guitar is played by Arata Inoue who is active in the underground music scene in Tokyo.Musilogue has chosen young creator Ryo Kawahara as a remixer for a bonus track.“Elephant and a barbar” is their own style of New Jazz with a deep and sometimes ambient feeling across the album. This is an album where you can feel the progress of Music.https://soundcloud.com/jazztronik/fujiwara-digest

Black Focus

photo:
a propos:
BACK IN STOCK !!!!The borders between London's musical tribes have always been porous. For Yussef Kamaal, the sound of the capital - with its hum of jungle, grime and broken beat - has shaped a selftaught, UKtipped approach to playing jazz. In the states, the genre’s longrunning to-and-fro with hip hop - from Robert Glasper to Kamasi Washington - has reimagined it within US culture. On Black Focus, Yussef Kamaal frame jazz inside the basssaturated, pirate radio broadcasts of London.Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazzfunk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment. The pair, made up of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), have had little in the way of formal training. Instead, their musical tastes – and approach to playing – are indebted to Thelonious Monk’s piano as much as the drum programming of Kaidi Tatham.“It's all about the drums and the keys,” Williams says. “Not to take anything from anyone else, but that's where it all originates from: the chords, the rhythm of the chords and the drums.” Born out of a oneoff live session to perform Williams’ solo material for Boiler Room, it soon became a project in its own right. Coming together as Yussef Kamaal, they played a series of live shows where little more than a chord progression would be planned before taking to the stage.Bringing that unspoken understanding to the recording sessions (engineered by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics), the unplanned, telepathically spawned grooves retain the raw energy of their live shows. “It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says. “A lot of the tracks are just made spontaneously – Henry will be playing two chords, I'll fill in the groove and we'll just leave the arrangement naturally.” Both hail from South East London, crossing paths in 2007 as teenagers playing their first pub gigs around Peckham and Camberwell. Dayes drums for cosmicallyinclined, afrobeat outfit United Vibrations, while Williams – on top of drumming and playing keys in different incarnations over the years – has made waves with his solo, synthdraped house 12"s for muchfêted labels like 22a and Rhythm Section.Moving in the same circles but never playing together previously, rhythm underpins an innate musical understanding. As Williams explains, “The way we approach it is all about the energy and the feeling. We just get in there and we feel it out.” Drawing influence from all corners of London’s shapeshifting musical makeup, the sound of Black Focus is distilled – or focused – down to the core interlock between drums and keys.

Ethio Jazz Groove Project

photo:
a propos:
Limited edition Orange vinyl 100 exThe Selenites Band is a musical collective led by Obi Riddim aka Antoine Laloux. The band is playing mostly Ethio Jazz, a popular Ethiopian music trend, famous from the 50’s until the 70’s in Ethiopia. During this Golden Age famous musicians such as Mulatu Astatke, Girma Béyéné, Mahmoud Ahmed, Getatchew Mekurya dominated the musical scene. The Selenites Band is paying a tribute to those Masters by playing their major pieces, and through their own creative work inspired by the Spirit of this time. Modal Jazz, pentatonic melodies, free improvisation are expressed and magnified through the original vintage sound, mixing of woodwind instrument, psychedelic guitars -which remains Krautrock movement- and a drums section that seems to have stepped out of a Blaxploitation movie. The Selenites Band is blowing a heat wave from the Grand Rift Valley to reach a powerful tectonic force, deeper than a sand storm, magic as a transe under the moon, vibrant as a tropical party fever in some Addis Abeba Club back in the Old days. After releasing their first Ep ( A=Face visible ) in 2019 with Sandal Label , The french label Stereophonk put out 6 recorded live tracks which consist of classic Ethiopian tracks composed by Mulatu Astatke et Girma Beyene . Some of them have been made famous internationally being sampled by popular artists like Damian Marley, Nas, Jay Z … who helped the recognizing of this regional culture and gift .On this record, the band is pushing in front his raw sound that we can hear on stage, crazy desert sound that brings you to travelling and explorations album preview : soundcloud.com/stereophonk-1/the-selenites-band-vinyl-preview-ethio-jazz

Crash Test

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Sauce Combo is a powerful and dynamic jazz trio lead by Marcjean, saxophonist from Bestown (Besançon), sided by the mercenary drummer Tom Moretti and the melodious Victor Pierrel on bass. The trio's music takes place in the modern jazz renewing coming especially from England and the USA. France has now a champion.Inspirated by vintage african and west indies jazz, 70's jazz funk and fusion but also 90's drum & bass, broken beat and hip hop, the repertoire is a rich jazz bomb exploding to the ears. Each second brings its his new colorful burst to admire. The band's brilliant game makes it a living listening experience. The music is rich and versatile but cohesive and united. Why?Crash Test came to light in one day during a single 7 hours recording session at the Honey For Bear laboratories. Arnaud Bataillard, the sound's engineer, wanted to try several new tubes and audio gears added in his studio set up. The trio went to test it in a crash test session. All the recordings could have been compromise somewhere but... What was before planned as a try ended into a fantastic album. The mental disposition, while playing when you know that all can be lost in a minute, gave the musicians the proper dimension to express their feelings in a total freedom. They were playing for pleasure and without any pressure. It was for all, but it could have been also for nothing. And we can literally feel that. This unique record had to be release as soon as possible to transmit the freshness of this beautiful impact to the listeners. Above all, Clément Laurentin's "Equilibre Précaire VI" achieves this album, offering a painting with four figures at the edge of the fall, in a constant imbalance, playing with time and gravity. It's the perfect allegory for the three band's members plus the engineer while making this record.
