It Takes Two

a propos:
Lynn Williams may not be someone you have heard of but her pedigree is strong. Her father was Hank Ballard (of King and James Brown Fame) and her mother was 60s Miami Radio Personality and dance group leader Vanilla ''Miss Boom Boom'' Williams. Lynn cut 5 Excellent 7"s for various Henry Stone owned Miami labels in the 70s here we present her two most collectable. The first 'It Takes Two' is a smokey deepfunk killer that would cost you £1000 any day of the week for good reason. On the flip "Don't be Surprised" is one of Miami's best ever deep soul records period, a dark serious ballad pulled off with amazing emotion considering her young years at the time of recording.- One of Miami Rarest Deepfunk 45s.- Original sells for over £1000- Daugher of Hank Ballard, of James Brown and King Fame

Reality/Dreams

A hot and steamy funk jam on the A, a swooning samba with a hectic climax on the B: dynamically this is pretty much the perfect 45 as it ticks all funk dancefloor scenarios. Sonically it's just as sweet with widescreen production, fireside harmonies and pianos that could meander on for days and you'd never get bored. Previously rarer than unicorn knickers, this Underground Resurrection re-release comes our way the same week as the Second Resurrection 45. AOTN are clearly working on biblical form right now.

Let's Do It Today (Procrastination)/Peace

Western Michigan had a very healthy music scene throughout the '60s and '70s, with Georgia-born soul legend Jackey Beavers (aka Jackie Beavers) and producer Palmer James forging that area's soul identity. Beavers produced the recording by this obscure band from Battle Creek and issued their only 45 on his Jaber label. The rhythm section of Wright, Teasley and Scurlock were better known as Jr. Walker's All Star group, and they made this recording shortly before leaving the bandleader's ranks. The Us would share ties with the Apachies (track 20), for both bands included at some point members of Jr Walker's All Stars. Trombonist Jack Hill would be involved in both bands and would help create the unique arrangement on 'Let's Do It Today.' Bassist Larry Scurlock recounts the origin behind the song's theme, "We were ready to get on with it. No draggin' around, let's do this now, today is the day! I've lived this motto for all of my life."The full-length version here shows The Us head into psychedelic regions in the final minutes of the song that have never been heard since they were recorded over 30 years ago. "I wrote it in less than half a day to get some royalties" remembers Scurlock. "We were experimenting with tuning, a quarter tone below the note. We were sure under the influence back in those days!"Recorded 1969 at Midwestern Sound Studios, Grand Rapids, MIProduced by Jackey BeaversArranged by Jack HillPersonnel - Doug Cassens (tenor sax), Philip Wright (guitar, vocals), Larry Scurlock (bass, vocals), Jerome Teasley (drums)Unreleased full version of this rare 45 for the first time.Cut from tape to lathe by the masters at Timmion Cutting Lab.

Making New Friends

auteur:

a propos:
DJ Fryer's Athens of the North label continues its relentless charge the annals of funk and disco, focussing attentions here on the mid '70s debut of Jeanie Tracy. Glance at the discography of the Houston-born singer and you are presented with a storied recording career that includes credits alongside Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin and Sylvester so it's little surprise to see that original copies of Making New Friends / Trippin On The Sounds rarely change hands below the $1000 mark. Originally released on Marvin Holmes' Oakland-based Brown Door Records around 1975, this Athens of the North edition is a must for any self-respecting 45 wielding selectors out there! The A-side is a recognised classic of the rare groove canon but it's "Trippin On The Sounds" that you need to hear; a glorious horn-laden deep funk nugget.
