RELEASED ON RECORD STORE DAY 2016Limited pressing LP issue of previously unreleased recordings. 7 tracks have been remastered from James Mason's personal master tapes (which had to be repaired due to deterioration during storage) and have attempted to preserve as closely as possible the sound of the original recording. Liner notes are written by James Mason himself. TIP!James Mason only made one album, that won acclaim years after it’s release. “Rhythm Of Life” became a soul-jazz cult classic, recorded in around 1978/79 with musicians such as Narada Michael Walden and Gene Torres, and featuring Clarice Taylor’s beautiful, characteristic vocals. The multi-instrumentalist recorded far more tracks around the release of “Rhythm Of Life”, but his music became out of fashion because musical trends shifted. Another album never arrived, and the recordings ended up in a box. Today the release of James Mason’s second album is finally set, and will be an collection of these forgotten tracks.

Windy City Theme/Show Me The Way To Love

photo:
a propos:
The true definition of a "rare-groove", "Windy City Theme" is a triumphant, funky paean to the spiritual home of the Blues, Jazz and House music. Often closely guarded by the rare record cognoscenti this scarce 45 on the Chi Sounds label was originally released in 1976 and became a solid staple of London's underground rare-groove scene, finding favour with DJ's like Norman Jay and Giles Peterson with the track even appearing on their groundbreaking "Journeys By DJ" mix. B-side cut "Show Me The Way" is not to be overlooked either, a smooth, stepping soul number with lush orchestration and yearning vocals featuring the amazing arrangements of The Chi-Sound Orchestra, sounding like a beautiful cross between MFSB and Marvin Gaye. An utterly essential 45!

Lihue

photo:
a propos:
Top tier Hawaiian disco boogie masterpiece available for the first time on 45. It took us 3 years to persuade Nohelani Cypriano to let us do 'Lihue' , a brilliant fairly obscure disco boogie track but if you are a fan and you keep trying your enthusiasm for the music pays off. Not only are we are just delighted to present 'Lihue' on 7 for the first time (Previously LP only) but to top it off the flip is a track from a VERY rare hawaiian 45 also by Nohelani called 'playing with fire', which sounds like a party track straight out your favorite 80s film. I rate it, which means it's good! Its like rare-groove scene all over again but with new records.

Changes

photo:
a propos:
Charles Bradley is set to release his third album, Changes, on April 1st on Daptone Records. Rolling Stone named Changes one of the "Most Anticipated Albums of 2016," stating "The ageless, limitless 'Screaming Eagle of Soul' swoops back with Changes, an album named after Charles Bradley's affected rework of Black Sabbath's 1972 piano ballad."The remarkable against-all-odds rise of Charles Bradley since the release of his 2011 debut album No Time For Dreaming has been well documented. He transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone Records. The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another including a breakthrough performance at SXSW, several television performances and having the album named to many year end "best of" lists. The soul singer's ascent continued with the 2013 release of his triumphant second album Victim of Love, which saw Bradley emerging from his past heartaches stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share. With Changes, the powerhouse performer brings music fans of all ages another unforgettable set of songs and will continue to bring his live show to stages around the world.

Strange Games & Funky Things Vol.5

photo:
a propos:
Another classic compilation from the BBE back- catalogue gets re-stocked for the first time, in celebration of their 20th anniversary. The 'Strange Games' series which began in the summer of 1997, represents the blueprint for modern R&B and rap music. It joins the dots between 70s soul, 80s rare groove and 90s hip hop. This compilation contains a wide variety styles, from classic dance-floor fillers to lesser known gems. A more accessible 'digger's delight' with an emphasis on quality tracks, not just songs only worth having for a 2 second sample. Featuring a much more worldly selection than its predecessors, tracks by the multi platinum selling War and Sylvia (Founder of Sugarhill Records) sit side by side with world music icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of legendary 'Strange Games…' records, this time compiled by the one and only DJ Spinna.

Aloha Got Soul: Soul AOR & Disco In Hawai'i 1979-1985

photo:
a propos:
STRUT continues to break new ground with its next compilation, ‘Aloha Got Soul’. It encompasses a vibrant era of contemporary music made in Hawai’i during the 1970s to the mid-1980s as jazz, rock, funk, disco and R&B co-existed alongside Hawaiian folk music.New on Strut for February 2016, ‘Aloha Got Soul’ encompasses a vibrant era of contemporary music made in Hawai’i during the 1970s to the mid-1980s as jazz, rock, funk, disco and R&B co-existed alongside Hawaiian folk music.Hawai’i’s identity had undergone huge change: statehood into America in ‘59 and the Vietnam War were the backdrop as Hawai’i’s youth found inspiration in a new wave of international music led initially by The Beatles and Stones and, later, by US R&B bands like Earth Wind & Fire and Tower Of Power. Garage bands flourished during the ‘60s and, by the ‘70s, live music was at its peak. W aikiki was filled with clubs: The Point After, Infinity’s, Hawaiian Hut, Spats and more. For the ‘70s generation of artists, some came through the talent contest ‘Home Grown’ and its accompanying compilation LP. Singer Nohelani Cypriano won it with her instant radio hit, ‘Lihue’. Other winning songs, like Marvin Franklin’s soul surfer jam ‘Kona Winds’, burned more slowly but have endured with DJs today. Many records also packed a powerful message. In 1978, Hawaiian was made the official state language and a huge movement arose to revive hula and traditional music. Steve & Teresa’s ‘Kaho’olawe Song’ longs for an island long gone: the US military had used Kaho’olawe as a bombing range since Pearl Harbor. Nohelani Cypriano sang about the once sleepy town of Kailua, now a popular tourist destination: “Kailua needs no high-rise with her blue skies, not for our eyes. Can you realize?” Leading Hawaiian artists like Aura, Mike Lundy and keyboardist Kirk Thompson’s Lemuria took time in high quality facilities like Broad Recording Studio to make albums. Others grabbed studio time when they could: Tender Leaf’s Murray Compoc worked for the city bus by day and recorded an album during night sessions. Other albums were spontaneous. In 1983, Steve Maii & Teresa Bright recorded an acoustic set in just 3 hours after being invited to a studio following a gig. For the artists of the ‘70s, the climate for music changed rapidly during the mid-‘80s as DJ culture grew and live venues shut down. Hawai’i’s R&B era shone brightly and relatively briefly but, despite brilliant musicians, regular gigs and LP releases, most of the music barely made it to the mainland. Thanks largely to Aloha Got Soul’s Roger Bong, a new interest in this fertile era of Hawaiian music has grown, culminating in this new compilation of overlooked gems. ‘Aloha Got Soul’ is compiled and annotated by Bong and features rare photos and original artwork.

55

photo:
a propos:
Shrouded in mystery, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band (BRSB) releases their long awaited debut “55” on Brooklyn’s own Big Crown Records. Long time multi instrumentalist and band leader Bjorn Wagner spent a few months in Trindad & Tobago where he became fascinated with Steel Drums. His initial intrigue with local steel pan music culture led him to learning the instrument both through help of local players and on his own. After he became proficient on the pans Bjorn had his own instrument built from a used oil barrel by legendary pan man Louis C. Smith. Upon returning home to Germany, Bjorn set out to blend the Tropical Steel into his already sharply honed Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop sensibilities. The outcome is an updated take on a classic format, a truly unique sound. Their first two recordings were covers of The Meters “Look A-Py-Py” & “Ease Back” which they self released on a 45. Looking back on these two sides you can tell they were just getting their chops up for what was to come next. This is evidenced by how all hell broke loose when they went on to cover 50 Cent’s hit PIMP taking the DJ and vinyl collecting communities by storm. Many people thought the recording was the original sample and probably still do to this day when it is played. The original Mocambo pressing sold out quickly and is now a collector’s item fetching heavy prices when it changes hands. It was this tune that made the introduction between Bjorn and Danny Akalepse of Big Crown. They immediately hit it off and starting making plans to do a full length project with the band. Keeping in the tradition of Steel Drum records, 55 is a journey through re-interpolations and covers with an updated approach, pushing Steel Pan music to uncharted territory. Flawlessly bringing previously untouched genres into the steel pan cannon ranging from Underground Hip Hop tunes to staple Funk tracks and some of all that falls in between. From the smoothed out Reggae cover of John Holt’s “Police In Helicopter” to the DJ sure shot cover of Faith Evan’s “Love Like This” BRSB’s 55 is reinvigorating tunes both well known and helping to shed some light on tunes still largely undiscovered. However, some of the strongest tunes on the album are original compositions, from spaced out Disco vibes on “Beetham Highway Ride” and “Port Of Spain Hustle” to the ugly face inspiring drums of “Laventille Road March”. Recorded to analog 8 track tape at The Mocambo Studios in Hamburg, 55 is a gritty, punchy journey in sound drawing on music from around the world, using production aesthetics from across both eras and genres, all coming together seamlessly. If the 45s that have already come out on Mocambo, Plane Jane, and Truth & Soul are an indication, this full length is going to be a staple to both casual listeneners and Disc Jockeys alike. Catch BRSB live in Fall as they tour the world with the mysterious heavy sound that is in fact, all their own.

Love Is A Hurtin' Thing

photo:
a propos:
BACK IN STOCK “Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing” is the lead off single from Gloria Ann Taylor’s upcoming anthology with the ultra-heavy psychedelic soul burner “Brother Less Than A Man” on the B-side.Originally released on Gloria and her husband Walter Whisenhunt’s label Selector Sound as a 7in single, “Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing” features her soaring vocals backed by luscious strings, orchestral horns and a searing guitar. On the flip is “Brother Less Than A Man” which sounds like a proto Funkadelic /Parliament psychedelic funk bomb. Pressed as a 7in single on the House Guests label, it highlights a grittier side of her singing that matches the song’s depth and intensity. Backed by a rhythm section featuring Bootsy Collins and brother Catfish who along with Gloria and her husband founded the label after leaving James Brown’s band. Look for the similarly titled anthology of Gloria’s ouput on the Selector Sound label to drop later in 2015.
