Selectors 001: Motor City Drum Ensemble

photo:
a propos:
MCDE shares some of his most prized gems on this compilation that kicks of the limited Dekmantel 'Selectors' series. Check! What, exactly, is a selector? Dekmantel has long been determined to find out, even before the Amsterdam-based crew added an official Selectors stage to its annual summer festival in 2014. While the stage has since played host to an elite class of DJs that includes the likes of Floating Points, Mike Servito, Traxx, DJ Harvey, Ben UFO, and Donato Dozzy, to name just a few, Dekmantel came to realize that the Selectors concept needed a larger platform of its own.As such, 2016 will see the launch of both a limited-capacity festival and compilation series, both bearing the Selectors name. The compilations will come first, with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Young Marco, and Joy Orbison at the helm of the initial three chapters. These are not mix CDs; every Selectors compilation will include a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks personally curated by the artist.Admittedly, drawing a line between "selectors" and mere DJs is an all-but-impossible task—it's essentially a "you know it when you see it" proposition—but it's hard to argue that Motor City Drum Ensemble (a.k.a. Danilo Plessow) doesn't tick all of the required boxes. He's been digging for records since his teenage years, and his DJing has become the stuff of legend, thanks in no small part to his head-turning sets at the last few Dekmantel festivals. In truth, Plessow's relationship with Dekmantel dates back to the earliest days of the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, making him a natural candidate to head up the inaugural Selectors compilation. As expected, he's thrown himself into the task; selecting a want list from his collection of 15,000 records was no easy task, but getting permission for the final tracklist was even tougher. One song in particular, Raphael Green's "Don't Mess with the Devil," required him to personally call up a church in St. Louis, Missouri. "The guy, he's a Bishop," he says. "When the Ferguson protests were happening, for example, he was on CNN explaining his thoughts on the whole thing, so he's a known public figure, but nobody really knew that he had this amazing record that was recorded in '79 or '80. His voice is just unbelievable. It's the kind of record that when I heard it the first time, I couldn't believe that there had only been like 100 copies pressed, and that this wasn't actually big."Motor City Drum Ensemble's record bag is full of these kinds of gems, but he has no qualms about sharing a few of his secret weapons with a wider audience. "I wanted to get some of the stuff that is really, really hard to get, and make it available for younger people," he explains. "I used to be in the same situation. Back when I was 18, I would listen to a Rainer Truby mix and he would only play these $400 Brazilian records. I was like, 'Fuck, how am I ever going to be able to afford these?' I was glad when there was a reissue, and it's a bit the same with the compilation now." "Basically," he explains, "the approach for the compilation was, 'If I walked into a record store, what kind of compilation would I buy?' That's what I did."

Schéma de vie

auteur:

photo:
a propos:

Remixed With Love Vol Two Part B

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Classic Disco Reworked From Original Multi-Track Tapes! 2015 was another great year for Z Records, a year that saw the release of the new artist album from Opolopo, the Joey Negro compiled Le Freak - a tribute to the sound of Chic, 90’s House & Garage and the long awaited Supafunkanova Vol.2 alongside Sean P.Z Records is starting 2016 in similarly strong fashion with the follow up to Remixed With Love. It's been over two years since the first instalment which topped many sales charts on its release so now the remixes that made up that album have been heard on house and disco dancefloors around the world ever since, it's time for Volume 2. So allow us to present 20 more reworkings of classic soul, funk, disco and boogie tracks from the likes of Grace Jones, Robert Palmer, Cheryl Lynn, The O'Jays, Gwen McCrae, George Benson and many more. Admittedly, we live in a world where remixes and edits of vintage dancefloor anthems aren't exactly hard to come by, in the same way that grains of sand aren't hard to come by on a beach. But where Soundcloud, Beatport et al heave under the weight of a gazillion bootleg offerings, many taking a dusty, scratched old 12-inch or a dodgy MP3 as their starting point, Remixed With Love is a little different. Not only is the man with one of the most legendary record collections in the game guaranteed to dig deeper than most, every track you hear has been (re)created using spanking new analogue transfers of the original multi-track tapes, with the full consent and co-operation of the copyright owners. Which means not only are you getting the best possible sound quality, the creators of the original tracks are getting paid too – as they damn well should be. These multi track tapes also uncovered elements that were not used in the original mixes so Joey has incorporated some of these never before heard parts such as the Grace Jones aerobic workout instruction. Putting an album like this together is no easy feat, as Dave himself explains in the extensive liner notes that accompany this package. First, you have to get permission from the copyright owners to undertake the project at all – which can in itself entail hundreds of emails and phone calls. Then you have to track down the original tapes – when many may have been recorded over, lost or simply destroyed – and convince the label archivists to get them digitised. And that's before you even start on the remixing… which is when you find half the parts are missing, or you can't foreground that killer piano lick you wanted to because the original was recorded live in the studio and the piano track has the bassline bleeding all over it. The title of this album is extremely appropriate, because for Mr Lee this definitely has been a labour of love!

Henry Stone's Miami Sound

photo:
a propos:
When Terry Kane - a sound engineer who was barely twenty years old at the time - built an 8-track recording studio above Henry Stone's office space in the Hialeah area of Miami, he probably never envisaged that he was laying the bedrock for a creative hub that would spawn over 25 gold records and over 100 million record sales worldwide. In the process, it would help to make Henry Stone a legend of American music. At one end of the spectrum, warehouse boy turned global superstar Harry Wayne Casey - better known as leader of K.C. & The Sunshine Band - was pumping out disco classics on a massive scale with ubiquitous airplay and sell-out shows. At the other, Rodney Matthew and his group Formula 1, were relying on the might of the T.K. distribution machine to propel them into the spotlight. As remarkable as their 1977 masterpiece on Du-Vern records was, it inevitably failed to have the seismic impact of The Sunshine Band's commercial dance pop.For every success story like T-Connection, with their firebrand funk-disco fusion and major label achievements, there were equally talented acts such as Stevens And Foster who also called on Stone's services to showcase their vision: judging by the scarcity of original copies of their self-written and produced modern soul jewel on Jerri Records, they also failed to reach beyond the Sunshine state, save for the rarified ears of collectors and connoisseurs. The sheer amount of records that came out of those modest premises at 495 SE 10th Court - about 8km from Downtown Miami (as the pink flamingo flies) - is mind boggling. With a huge roster of in-house labels as well as production and distribution deals, label boss Henry Stone was a passionate, busy, and exceptionally well connected man.Stone would nurture the early careers of the likes of million seller Betty Wright, as well as provide a platform for Milton Wright and Leno Phillips (her older brothers) to express their creativity. Clarence Reid (AKA Blowfly) and Willie Clark penned a raft of amazing tracks for acts such as Jimmy 'Bo' Horne and Little Beaver (AKA Willie Hale, who would also write a wealth of material for others), while T.K. in-house band Miami's own Robert Moore also released records on yet another T.K. imprint, Blue Candle. The music scene in Miami and indeed, Florida, at the time was fertile and moved quickly with the times, there were hit-makers and risk-takers, shining stars and those who never went far.As a living document of Henry Stone's remarkable legacy, the diverse styles and ideas coming out of Miami-Dade County and beyond, as well as a glimpse at the successes and near-misses achieved by a dazzling array of artists at the time, this collection serves as an invaluable insight.- Press Page with images and text: http://athensofthenorth.com/henry/- first press of the 2LP includes holy grail bonus 7"- Brand New - Thousand Years- 18 incredible tracks from the Man who invented Disco- Selected by Rare Disco connoisseurs Euan Fryer & Ian Wright- Release will tie in with up and coming award winning documentary 'The Record man' about Henry Stone and his music in Miami. Soul Sok Sega

photo:
a propos:
Following successful excursions into rare tropical and island sounds with the ‘Sofrito’ series, ‘Haiti Direct’ and ‘Calypsoul 70’ albums, Strut Records turns its focus to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius for a new compilation, ‘Soul Sok Séga’. Séga first developed as an insular music and dance form after slaves arrived on Mauritius (then île de France) from East Africa and Madagascar during the 17th to 19th centuries, using Créole language and rhythms played on the large ravanne circular drum, the triangle and the maravanne, a box filled with dried seeds. Séga was essentially frowned upon and marginalised by the Mauritian bourgeois until the 1950s when singer Ti Frère began to play a more Westernised fusion of séga. Through Ti Frère and his contemporaries like Serge Lebrasse, the music began to be popularised during the ‘60s and became fully accepted after the ‘Night Of The Morne’ event in 1964 as the Créole community asserted ist cultural identity. ‘Soul Sok Séga’ documents the heyday of séga in Mauritius during the 1970s as a new generation of contemporary artists broke through. Jazz, soul, funk and rock elements all began to be effortlessly infused into traditional séga folk roots to create some inspired fusions. A talented new wave of artists including Jean- Claude, Claudio, Marie Josée and Roger Clency became domestic stars and began to take the music to international stages for the first time. Meanwhile, cult artists like the James Brown-influenced Ti L’Afrique, Coulouce and Christophe all enjoyed a more brief but important moment in the spotlight. Since this era, séga has now been adopted as the national music of Mauritius and the original ‘70s music is a revelation for any fans of tropical music and world sounds. Strut’s album features extensive sleeve notes from long time Mauritian cultural champion, Percy Yip Tong, including new artist interviews, photos and original vinyl artwork. The compilation is by DJ duo La Basse Tropicale (Natty Hô and Konsöle), based in the neighbouring island of La Reunion. All formats (1CD / 2LP / digital) are unmixed, with all tracks never reissued internationally since they were originally available. An accompanying European tour featuring Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio with an all-star band of original musicians is planned for Summer 2016.KEY POINTS- first official international compilation documenting séga music from Mauritius- key artists involved in album and promotion including Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio- features exclusive artwork by Lewis Heriz and sleeve notes by respected Mauritian cultural journalist and promoter, Percy Yip Tong- strong addition to Strut’s tropical reissue range following the Sofrito series, Haiti Direct and Calypsoul 70- supported by DJ dates by album compilers La Basse Tropicale with plans for séga legends live tour during 2017

The Path

photo:
a propos:
Coloured Vinyl 2xLP !!! The Path’ is a progression from the artists previous record ‘Inner Worlds’ and the focus on searching for the musical voyages is still very relevant in the building of this album."During the process of this album I moved from a vibrant city atmosphere to a rural sea town. This move played a big part in terms of influences, being close to the sea and nature brought a calming effect on the development. ‘The Path’ represents the search for a musical progression, focusing more on the smaller details and textures to create a broader dynamic sense, allowing the different elements to breathe more. During the process of making this record there was a curiosity to explore new ways of making music, experimenting more with hardware synths, different recording techniques and including more live instrumentation as an alternative to sample based techniques. ”
