Clave Trax Vol. 1

photo:
a propos:
Clave House debuts with 4 cuts of laid back Midwest grooves. Appian kicks things off with 'For Warm Weather Pt2', a breezy melodic summertime anthem. Gerald Norton answers with 'Wilbert Cobbs' in his usual hypnotic low-slung style. Segv starts off the B-side with sub-120bpm dub echo chugger 'Uhxhxh', and is rounded out by jazzy rumble 'Pitchblack' from Minneapolis mainstay Berndt.

Blackwavefunk

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Moniquea established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 MoFunk Records debut album Yes No Maybe. For her followup, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synthpop sounds of the 80’s. Thus, the album title: Blackwavefunk.Listening to Blackwavefunk feels like sweeping across a spectrum of sounds and feels. The lead single, “Checkin’ Out,” channels the ‘street funk’ sound that Moniquea’s native California is known for, while “I Just Don’t Know” slows the pace and mood to offer up one of the few true downtempo love songs of the genre. “When You Are Away,” “Make You Feel My Love” (feat. Brian Ellis) and “Why Can’t You See” offer sleek, sexy modern soul soundscapes while the Turquoise Summers-produced “Knew It” thumps with a menacing g-funk bounce. Finally, the wave in Blackwavefunk reveals itself on the eccentric “Check Your Sources,” an anthem about sordid speculation and grievous gossip, over a musical backdrop that sounds like 1999-era Prince and DPG somehow achieved perfect sonic fusion. The album’s closer, “Famous,” takes it further and gives a glimpse of what it might sound like if Bernie Worrell played synth basslines for OMD or Pet Shop Boys.

The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda

photo:
a propos:
Double LP with 2 booklets, lyrics, and download cardAs some of you may know, Alice Coltrane was a legendary pianist, composer, spiritual leader, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and in?uential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, four years after meeting John, he died of liver cancer, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate, Alice su?ered sleepless nights and severe weight loss. At her worst, she weighed only 95 pounds. She had hallucinations in which trees spoke, various beings existed on astral planes, and the sounds of “a planetary ether” spun through her brain, knocking her into a frightening unconsciousness. The critical event of this period was not that Alice fell into the nadir of her existence, but rather that she experienced tapas, a vital period of trial. These tapas (a Sanskrit term she used to describe her su?ering) helped prepare Alice for the spiritual ally she found in Swami Satchidananda, an Indian guru, with whom Alice made her frst trip to India. On her second trip there, Alice had a revelation instructing her to abandon the secular life and become a spiritual teacher in the Hindu tradition – so she moved out West – eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram on 47 acres she’d bought in Agoura Hills, California.Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice. From the mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s, Alice Coltrane self-released four brilliant cassette albums. These cassettes contained a music she invented, inspired by the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed together with the Indian devotional music of her religious practice, and even fnds Alice singing for the frst time in her recorded catalog. Originally only made available through her ashram, they are her most obscure body of work and possibly the greatest re?ection of her soul.

Michael The Lion

photo:
a propos:
Music continues to evolve and lions continue to roar! Thus is the case with Michael The Lion and his first EP on Soul Clap Records. MTL is just one of the successful pseudonyms that have been associated with DJ Apt One. Pittsburgh-reared but Philly-styled, that City of Brotherly Love flavor is resident in nearly all of his work. A "genre-setter" with Nu-disco before it had a name, Michael has consistently delivered quality DANCE MUSIC through his production and DJing for more than a decade.Great music often pays homage to its foundational past. Michael's original music accomplishes this with his sample-based focus rooted in a disco-fink-soul core but with a keen sensibility for today's dance floor. His incorporation of live vocals, like Amy Douglas' gutsy performance on the modern funk monster "Get It On", results in original SONGS vs. the "one hour bedroom tracks" that proliferate today. Live instrumentation has also been Michael's hallmark, differentiating his past hits like "Get More" and "909 and Herb" and on this EP with the hypnotic, "The Changer". I also love Michael The Lion's focus on POSITIVITY in MESSAGE, as is evident with the uplifting "Side of Life".Whether through his original production, remixing/editing, or DJing, diverse music luminaries like Soul Clap, Jackmaster, Francois K, Gamble and Huff, Todd Edwards and many more all agree and appreciate Michael The Lion's prowess. On this new EP, you'll get to find out why too. Roar LION Roar!

In My House/Funk That

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
"In My House" is a "bucket list" song Nickodemus always dreamed of covering into an actual House version. After a weekend of old-school partying in the clubs & hanging with Baby Bam from the Jungle Brothers in Brooklyn, they called over Carol C & Lisa Shaw to lay down some vocals. Going for that straight ahead 90's hard hitting house vibe, Bam flipped his verse to show everyone how it was done back in the days. French house producer ART OF TONES aka Llorca (20:20 Vision / Local Talk) made 2 remix versions on the flip-side taking it deeper for the European dancefloors. After the US elections in November, Nickodemus decided the need to add another cover, updating Sagat's 1994 classic "FUNK THAT" for the B-Side. It features NYC house music party & radio host legends THE ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS over a funky break & deep chords reminiscing the OG. "Question, how can someone who is sexist racist, homophopic, Islamophobic, and an ableist become president of the United States of America? FUNK THAT!"

Wonderworld

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
After the success of Nickodemus' Wonderworld compilation album, we've decided to press a limited edition double 7" featuring 4 favorites off the compilation that have never seen the light of day on wax. First up is the rolling dancefloor cut "Los Tarantos" from Nickodemus' "Moon People" album, followed by Los Angeles producer Yukicito's uptempo reversioning of "Mirage". Tal M Klein's absolutely stomping remix of "N'Dini" featuring Ismael Kouyate on vocals starts the D side, while Nickodemus and Brian J (Pimps of Joytime)'s "Wanted Man" gets a skanking treatment by Nickodemus to round out the package.

Ears Hear Spears

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Redefnition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop’s most multi-talented artists, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman. Insight returns to the spotlight after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing, areas in which he found great success. This shouldn’t surprise longtime fans who may remember in as early as 1997, Insight created his own website, Insight.fm which featured an interactive SP1200 and forums. This was rare during the pre-social media era, long before having a web presence was a part of an artist’s everyday operation. Building a strong reputation for his live performance, his on-stage capabilities included not only rapping, but also producing, DJing, and even live drawing-while-freestyling and interacting with audience members. The triple threat from Boston (MC / DJ / Producer) has dedicated his life to his creativity and his diverse portfolio and resume is a true testament to the kind person Insight is on and off of his recordings. Credited for mentoring and being instrumental in the career beginnings of many of the staples of Boston’s current Hip Hop scene, and beyond, Insight also assisted a young D.C. native known as Damu the Fudgemunk, who later matured into an esteemed solo artist in his own right (and co-owner of Redefnition records). The 2 would frst collaborate on one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 2000’s as Y Society on 2007’s full length, Travel at Your Own Pace. Through this collaboration they formed a brotherhood that today is well into its second decade, bookmarked by this latest release. On Ears Hear Spears, “The Truncator” passionately speaks his mind through rhyme while “The Fudgemunk” handles all production. Throughout 10 outstanding tracks Insight delivers a diverse lyrical exhibition over a then 20-21 year old Damu the Fudgemunk’s beats. There’s an undeniable level of directness and sincerity in his lyrics which are artfully assembled in a manner that will astonish literary buffs, yet permeate the lives of everyday listeners alike. Pick up a copy of the album on vinyl, Cassette Tape or CD now. Vinyl version includes printed lyric sheet. Album also available to stream or download on all digital channels.

Banko Woman

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
For over forty years, the Apostles of Aba have stood as the jewel in the crown of the music scene in Eastern Nigeria. Since their formation in 1973, the band has turned out memorable performances in a variety of styles including rock, soul, funk, pop and reggae. Even today, the Apostles continue to thrill audiences in their hometown of Aba with dazzling shows. Cultures of Soul is proud to present one of the Apostles’ more obscure—yet relentlessly funky recordings in a full-color custom reverse board jacket. Banko Woman, originally released on the eponymous LP on Love Day Records in 1977. Straddling the world realms of afro-funk and disco, the track has long been a coveted dance floor filler amongst DJs, and for the first time is available for a wider audience. On the B-side is “Faith, Luck & Music,” also from the original Banko Woman album.

1991

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Long Beach serial chiller Ahwlee is a beat vet who delivers smooth buttery samples with a nostalgic vibe. 1991 is a cult classic cassette now issued for the first time on vinyl. These tracks are dusty, mellow and easy-going. Don’t mistake mellow for boring, however, because Ahwlee’s production is nuanced and intricate underneath the minimalist overtones. There’s jazzed-up Rhodes all over the place, and the percussion work masterfully includes a ton of negative space in between perfectly chopped breaks. They’ll get your head nodding.
