The Reflex Revisions

photo:
a propos:
Three incredible re-works from French disco don The Reflex, for our very own legendary Canadian/Haitian keyboard wiz Henri-Pierre Noel. Funky Spider Dance is a percussion heavy bomb filled to the brim with Henri's soaring piano licks and infectious female vocal hooks. The Reflex has taken what was already a sure-fire club favourite, and created something of a dance floor destroyer. His rework of A Fifth of Beethoven takes its time to build into another heavy hitter. As the beats make way for Henri's deft keyboard flourishes, the recognition of this cover of the Walter Murphy classic (taken from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack) begins to dawn - and as it does, it's clear that once again the dream team of HPN and The Reflex have worked their magic!Last, but certainly not least, The Reflex's Revision of Back Home..., Sweet Home is a modern Island Funk masterpiece with organ and tropical guitar riffs making way for sunny brass stabs all underpinned by foot friendly beats. The original versions of Funky Spider Dance and Back Home..., Sweet Home can be found on Henri's One More Step LP, and his take of A Fifth of Beethoven was recently available on 7-inches of wax - all on Wah Wah 45s of course. The Reflex Revisions all appear here together on vinyl, in fact anywhere, for the very first time!

Our Parisian edit friend Reverend P hits us with a 4 track EP loaded with some serious boogie and disco heat. Concentrating on the sounds of Gladys Knight (A Side) and George Duke (B Side), Reverend P decided to edit 'em not once but twice...ouble action = double fun :)The A-side tracks are two uptempo numbers with Gladys while the flip comes with one mid tempo boogie tune and a high energy disco cut from Mr Duke.Solid GAMM material for anyone down with the more soulful sounds of disco!

Reworks Pt.2

a propos:
Aroop Roy returns to Basic Fingers with a second reworks release, this time all guns blazing. While the previous part focused more on disco and soul cuts, this one delivers three irresistible Afro-influenced house grooves. There's a reason why Gilles Peterson keeps playing Aroop on his radio show as soon as he gets his crate digging fingers on a new release.Um Trago on the B Side is definitely the fiercest offering here but don't miss out on the A-side with Ifa & Manuman. Both tracks are more than enough to get the juices flowing...

Nigeria 70: Sweet Times Afro Funk Highlife & Juju From 1970s Lagos

photo:
a propos:
Essential vinyl repress of the STRUT classic Nigeria 70: Sweet Times.“A landmark collection that remains a compelling journey into a time and place: Nigeria in the 1970s, when American soul and funk (along with Anglo-American blues-rock and psychedelia) infected the roots of traditional and popular West African musical styles like highlife, juju, fuji, and apala.” Dusted magazine Strut announce a brand new repress of the third instalment in the pioneering ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation series, compiled by series curator Duncan Brooker. Excavating another choice batch of rare grooves from Nigeria’s label archives, the new edition places the spotlight on some of the deeper fusions happening across the country during the 1970s as traditional guitar highlife blended with jazz and funk, hypnotic juju grooves became more progressive and young Nigerian bands came through with their own heavy West African take on U.S. soul, funk, disco and rock. As within much of the ‘Nigeria 70’ album series, all of the featured selections are previously unissued outside of Nigeria. Tracks range from the dynamite big band workout of Alex Ringo’s Moneyman & The Super 5 International to the Congolese guitar-drenched ‘Henrietta’ by the late Ali Chukwumah, former member of Stephen Osita Osadebe’s Sound Makers. Darker psych grooves from Don Isaac Ezekiel sit alongside a languorous highlife jam by the legendary Victor Olaiya and juju legend Ebenezer Obey cooks up a lilting, deeply beautiful mid-tempo groove from 1970 in a musical plea for peace. ‘Nigeria 70: Sweet Times’ is another essential celebration of the glut of incredible music that surfaced in post-independence Nigeria. This is the third edition in the acclaimed ‘Nigeria 70’ series. The first volume, released in 2001, was the first compilation of its kind to explore in depth the myriad of funk and soul fusions emerging from Nigeria during the 1970s. Strut followed this with a second edition, ‘Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump’, in 2008. ‘Nigeria 70” Sweet Times’ is compiled by Duncan Brooker and features extensive sleeve notes by writer and broadcaster Max Reinhardt.Limited new re-press of classic highlife, juju and afrobeat collection, 500 copies onlyDefinitive format: 2LP set including CD version as bonusOne of the most influential of all recent African music series which helped spawn a new market for African rare groovesAlbum fully remastered for this reissue

Lihue

photo:
a propos:
Top tier Hawaiian disco boogie masterpiece available for the first time on 45. It took us 3 years to persuade Nohelani Cypriano to let us do 'Lihue' , a brilliant fairly obscure disco boogie track but if you are a fan and you keep trying your enthusiasm for the music pays off. Not only are we are just delighted to present 'Lihue' on 7 for the first time (Previously LP only) but to top it off the flip is a track from a VERY rare hawaiian 45 also by Nohelani called 'playing with fire', which sounds like a party track straight out your favorite 80s film. I rate it, which means it's good! Its like rare-groove scene all over again but with new records.

Changes

photo:
a propos:
Charles Bradley is set to release his third album, Changes, on April 1st on Daptone Records. Rolling Stone named Changes one of the "Most Anticipated Albums of 2016," stating "The ageless, limitless 'Screaming Eagle of Soul' swoops back with Changes, an album named after Charles Bradley's affected rework of Black Sabbath's 1972 piano ballad."The remarkable against-all-odds rise of Charles Bradley since the release of his 2011 debut album No Time For Dreaming has been well documented. He transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone Records. The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another including a breakthrough performance at SXSW, several television performances and having the album named to many year end "best of" lists. The soul singer's ascent continued with the 2013 release of his triumphant second album Victim of Love, which saw Bradley emerging from his past heartaches stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share. With Changes, the powerhouse performer brings music fans of all ages another unforgettable set of songs and will continue to bring his live show to stages around the world.

Everybody Wants To

photo:
a propos:
On a fishing trip two years ago, the two main guys behind Africaine 808: D Leyers and Nomad - went to a tackle shop to buy some creepy crawlies (saltwater worms), not knowing that they were about to make a life changing discovery. In front of the shop a blind man was jammming on a little electronic organ, stomping his feet, singing, growling and basically making a scene. The boys were quite impressed with the fella, who introduced himself as 'Blind Double D'. They offered to bring him home and record him. He turned the offer down, but offered instead that they could record him on the spot in front of the tackle shop - if they bought him a bottle of good Bourbon. He explained that he would never set foot into a studio again in his life: he was sick of music production and the music industry in general, and that he just wanted this bottle of Bourbon and to be left alone. The boys got him the bottle, and recorded Blind D.D. on the spot with a tape recorder they borrowed from the tackle shop. Unfortunately, the tape was stored in one of the tackle boxes over the trip, and some of the creepy crawlies crawled into the tape and stank it all up. This added some extra funk to the recording. With Dirk and Nomad's usual studio trickery and production skills, they created the two versions of this very very funky, creepy, stanky track. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do. This record is dedicated to Blind D.D, wherever he is...
