I Thought You Wanted To Dance

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Did somebody say AOTN 12". For our first large format singe we bring you the unreleased full length version of the original Symbol 8 classic "I thought you wanted to dance". The track was featured on American Band Stand in the late 70's but failed to make it for the usual reasons (luck, management and distribution) but that is no marker of quality, these tracks are disco and modern soul royalty . Charlie Adams versatile vocal flipping into falsetto with ease while the band holds the solid groove is a special thing. On the flip-side is later and very different version of "I thought you wanted to dance plus a personal favourite and long time spin of my own "call me". Essential as always.

Strange Games & Funky Things Vol.5

photo:
a propos:
Another classic compilation from the BBE back- catalogue gets re-stocked for the first time, in celebration of their 20th anniversary. The 'Strange Games' series which began in the summer of 1997, represents the blueprint for modern R&B and rap music. It joins the dots between 70s soul, 80s rare groove and 90s hip hop. This compilation contains a wide variety styles, from classic dance-floor fillers to lesser known gems. A more accessible 'digger's delight' with an emphasis on quality tracks, not just songs only worth having for a 2 second sample. Featuring a much more worldly selection than its predecessors, tracks by the multi platinum selling War and Sylvia (Founder of Sugarhill Records) sit side by side with world music icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of legendary 'Strange Games…' records, this time compiled by the one and only DJ Spinna.

Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story Of 1970's Funky Lagos

photo:
a propos:
Limited new 15th anniversary repress of classic Afro-funk and afrobeat collection 500 copies only on a 3LP set including 2CD version and 1 CD audio documentary.Strut repress one of the all-time classic compilations of Afro-funk and Afrobeat for 2016, the first volume of the mighty Nigeria 70 series. Originally released in 2001, the album followed the death of Fela Kuti and a renewed interest in original Afrobeat among younger club-goers. Put together over a three-week trip to Lagos, it documented for the first time the explosive era when domestic bands fused traditional highlife and juju with funk, soul, rock and disco. Alongside two cuts by Fela Kuti, Nigeria 70 shone the spotlight on the incredible musicianship of artists like Segun Bucknor, Joni Haastrup and his Monomono band, Orlando Julius, saxophonist Peter King, “Guitar Boy” Victor Uwaifo, Lijadu Sisters and quirky keyboard wizard William Onyeabor among many others. Spread over 3LPs, the original edition also included a one-hour audio documentary featuring exclusive interviews with many original musicians and industry figures from the ‘70s scene, narrated by Wunmi. As well as being a valuable document of an under-rated era, Nigeria 70 was one of the first crossover albums to dig deep into the African music archives and effectively market the music to a new online audience hungry for rare grooves and unique dancefloor sounds. Since Nigeria 70, this market has widened hugely with labels like Soundway, Analog Africa and Hot Casa all working tirelessly to document rare African beats. This new pressing of the Nigeria 70 3LP set is limited to 500 copies and features the full CD version and CD audio documentary as a bonus within the package. Full artwork is also featured including John Armstrong’s extensive sleeve note history alongside rare photos.Limited new 15th Anniversary repress of classic Afro-funk and Afrobeat collection, 500 copies onlyDefinitive format: 3LP set including 2CD version and 1CD audio documentary as bonusone of the most influential of all recent African music collections which helped spawn a new market for African rare groovesalbum fully remastered for this reissue

Resurgence

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
BBE presents the unreleased and never before heard album Resurgence from the Jigmastas.Following closely behind last year's expanded reissue of 2000's 'Grassroots', the New York duo of DJ Spinna & Kryminul present 'Resurgence', a long awaited album of previously unreleased material. Comprising tracks created between 2003 and the present day, 'Resurgence' represents the duo's musical growth during a period where most of us assumed the Jigmastas project was on hold. From start to finish, 'Resurgence' is brimming over with soul thanks to Spinna's distinctively languid boom-bap productions. Rapper Kryminul is on fine form with his clever and witty brand of storytelling, which still stays close to the streets whilst keeping the subject matter varied and eclectic. Storming guest appearances come from Shabaam Saadique and Old World Disorder (SKAM2, Shadowman Boogie), both familiar names to Jigmastas fans. With the announcement of another brand new album 'Stellar' coming later in 2016, 'Resurgence' is a perfect opportunity to bring yourself up to speed with Jigmastas, just as they prepare to reclaim their rightful place at hip hop's top table.

If You Dance Tonight/Say Yea

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Our second and final release from Billy Bruner T'Spoon out of his obscure Oil Capital Record Label. 'If You Dance Tonight' is almost unknown boogie spin your never gonna find, solid. On the flip 'Say Yea' is an 80s sweet soul ballad years ahead of the pack, I have a soft spot for this one, damn good end of nighter if it's been a good one. Strictly 500 no repress.

Order Of Nothingness

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
The unique multidirectional artist Jimi Tenor visited Philophon's Joy Sound Studios for the first time and created another example that showcases him as one of the spearheading creative minds of our time. On "Order of Nothingness" he takes the listener by his hand to follow him into a multidimensional experience of psychedelic afrobeat. On top of the driving groove of "Tropical Eel" Jimi lets his fingers dance on the Hammond Extra-Voice, that rare tube based proto-synth which was introduced in the same year when Juri Gagarin was the first human in outer space: Jimi - proto-synth - outer space. That's a logical order!

Jimmy, Renda-Se/Kizumbau

photo:
a propos:
When Greg Caz and Deano Sounds teamed up to create The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul they created a collection of vintage Brazilian music that stretches across the scope of funk, soul, and psychedelic. Co-compiler and Brazilian music aficionado, Greg Caz says: “Without necessarily having a central theme other than funky nuggets from the first half of the 70s, we believe this compilation displays its own particular sense of logic, and that these songs ultimately all sound fantastic together. Regardless of one’s familiarity, or lack thereof, with artists like Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, Os Incríveis, Toni Tornado or Celia, the material on these 45s speaks its own truth and justifies their inclusion here. Many of these were originally available as singles, while others were taken from albums, but all are guaranteed to find their way into many DJ boxes and playlists.” The stunning 45s from this set will now be available for individual sale. The series continues with Tom Zé’s unstoppable riff on “Jimmy, Renda-Se” with Eduardo Araujo sounding a bit like a Brazilian Tom Jones on the B-side, “Kizumbau.” Also available this time out, the funked up deep groove “A Hora E Essa” from Celia with Franco’s jazzy funk cut “El, Voce, Psui!” on the flip.
