Burners

photo:
a propos:
Fresh off the heels of his groundbreaking album “The Reflecting Sea” with MC, Raw Poetic, Damu the Fudgemunk’s latest collaboration is with longtime friend and fan favorite, Flex Mathews. Preparing to drop their album in the coming months, the 2 have assembled a hearty EP consisting of 2 cuts and specially arranged instrumentals from the upcoming full length entitled, “Vibrations & Dreams”. Featuring the lead singles Burners and The Answer is Yes, the EP is sure to reel in hip hop fans and music aficionados alike. Some may remember Flex Mathews from the Damu produced cult classics, The Handsome Grandson EP (self released) and Live from Wonka Beats (Redef). Others may have encountered him on the road during his busy tour schedule or his recent debut solo album, “Hi, I’m Flex Mathews” with Unown (Oddisee’s Good Company). Both Flex and Damu have found ways to individually and collectively garner interests in their talents. With a running time of over 35 minutes, it was only fitting to call this release an EP. Launching the A-side is, “Burners” featuring California rap pillar, Blu of Blu & Exile fame and Boston’s finest himself, Insight (Y Society). The three MC’s spark the mic in a charismatic lyrical exhibition showcasing distinct styles from each personality. Providing the track, Damu the Fudgemunk locks a tight groove fusing ambient atmospheric noises and worldly textures for 10 mins and counting with extended DJ solos. All 4 parties reach the top of their games on Burners and create a one of a kind sound for hip hop in 2018. The posse cut is complimented, by the crowd pleasing call & response anthem, “The Answer is Yes”. This time, Flex is joined on the mic by his DJ, Damu. The duo presents a confident and fun perspective into staying positive and living the good life. If the lyrics aren’t enough to captivate the audience, the chorus is sure to catch the listener by storm to prevail that “Yes” is the answer. Musically this selection covers all bases of a hit record. The beat combines flavors from the West coast G-Funk, jazz, East coast hip hop and Go-Go which has the power to appeal to many audiences. The two hope that the songs message will inspire the masses to do their best and have a great lifetime. Side B of the EP continues with full instrumental versions. Fans of Damu’s last solo album, Vignettes will recognize how the lengthy production and arrangements of these 2 tracks pick up where the style of Vignettes left off. Whether you want good good hip hop songs or craving an extended program of instrumentals, Flex Mathews and Damu the Fudgemunk’s EP is built to satisfy.- Limited edition of 500 units- 36 Minutes of music, entirely produced by Damu The Fudgemunk- Features Blu of Blu & Exile and Insight (Y Society)- EP to be followed up with a 2LP later this spring

a propos:
A virtuoso, known for boundary-pushing production (often fusing traditional hip-hop drum programming with sampling and live music) and thoughtful lyrics, Black Milk is respected across the industry for his unique sound, consistency and innovation. Returning to the scene amidst a turbulent political climate, the Detroit-born rapper/producer announces FEVER, his upcoming studio album. Black Milk's sixth solo rap album, and his first since 2014's If There's a Hell Below, FEVER combines pointed and topical lyrics and brilliant musicianship, including percussion from all-star musicians Chris “Daddy” Dave (D'Angelo, Adele, Justin Bieber) and Daru Jones (Jack White), bass by long-time collaborator Malik Hunter and keys and guitar from newcomers Ian Fink and Sasha Kashperko, respectively. Black Milk evolves his production style of fusing electronic, soul, rock and other soundscapes with electronic programming and live music, a method he began experimenting with on his 2010 release Album of the Year. A cohesive 12-track project, listening to FEVER evokes the feeling of scrolling through an endless news feed, finding Black Milk reporting and commenting on the world's problems with empathy, clarity, and wit. Additional vocals from Dwele, Aaron "Ab" Abernathy, and Sudie (a producer / vocalist signed to Black Milk’s Computer Ugly label) serve to juxtapose Black’s heavy lyrical content with airy vibes. FEVER releases via Mass Appeal Records and Computer Ugly on February 23rd.Black Milk explains the concept behind FEVER: “Everybody’s temperature is up right now. The whole world is on edge. This album is my take on the issues I see as the cause for the high temp, and how I’m maneuvering through it.”To accompany the album announcement, Black Milk shares "Laugh Now Cry Later," the lead single from FEVER, which examines the mental and emotional tug of war within social media. “One moment you can be super angry about something and a couple of minutes later you’ll see a meme about that very same issue or some other random event that will make you laugh. We're taking in high volumes of content and experiencing an array of emotions, often times conflicting emotions, all day and night on this social media rollercoaster,” says Black. Flexing his flow over creepily ethereal vocal samples, a frantic bassline, and restless percussion from Chris Dave, Black Milk looks into the cognitive dissonance between horrifying current events in the midst of meme culture. Premiered by XXL, "Laugh Now Cry Later" runs through a litany of pressing issues, ranging from social media fakery, varying levels of consciousness, police brutality and more, as Black Milk chants on the chorus, "I see the whole world different now/You see my whole world’s different now/You’re in the sky, better learn to fly before your spaceship hits the ground."Explains Black Milk, “'Laugh Now Cry Later' is one of the darker songs on the album and represents a shift from my original intentions of making an album with more feel good vibes to letting the darker sounds flow out of me. Of course, between our dismal political and social climate, it was hard to make an entire album of feel-good vibes. I mean, how could I?”Double vinylCustom black and red marbled vinylCollectible poster

Medusa

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
A 44-minute long instrumental album that includes a vocal-feature by Akere. It is a matter of opinion whether a face can be incredibly beautiful or particularly disturbing, so that the mere sight deprives the viewer of his ability to act. However, you should never let an appearance freeze you. So: Close your eyes and enjoy the beauty of a mix of timeless vibes, warm sounds and shifted rhythms somewhere between Trip Hop, Boom Bap and G-Funk. The journey leads through ups and downs, influenced by music of all directions and oddities of different genres. L One's Medusa is in a position to cast a spell over the listener. However, this does not result in long-term anesthesia, but rather in a moment that directs all perception of the external world to a place of infinite possibilities. Where this journey leads to is up to everybodys self. A myth, so to say! After the Farska LP, Medusa is already the second collaboration between the young Munich-based HipHop producer and the young Munich-based label Beat Art Department and is released in cooperation with the renowned German HipHop label 58Beats.

Night Palms

photo:
a propos:
Night Palms is the first compilation from Hobo Camp. It explores the vibes of Adult Oriented Rock, G-Funk, Jazz, Boogie, and Soul, synthesizing these genres to a form more loaded and laid-back (perhaps on a careless night time stroll, returning from the dispensary or watering hole, to the jacuzzi, houseboat, or waterbed). A smoother approach to funk, similar in production ethos to many classic G-Funk tracks (where producers created or sampled the smoothest yacht-rock and jazz-funk moments to create bass heavy rap), Night Palms takes it one step further, offering original tracks that return more to the inspiratory sources of G-Funk... sonically and chillingly cruising at the perfect tempo. A vibe perpetuated by perfect night-time temperatures, mist, ocean breeze, the sound of flowing water, and the laid-back grooves that seemingly accompany it under the silhouettes of California Palm.Brian Ellis kicks off the compilation with Tides, a drifting instrumental opus of melodic currents that glide and weave in and out of each other. BOY DUDE introduces the first vocal with Modern Day Confusion, a wavy, pitch-bending journey describing the mental woes and issues in modern society. XL Middleton and Ghost close out the A side with Forgot About Each Other, a mid-tempo, keyboard-forward groove, echoing the notions of dying or diminishing love, accompanied by his signature emotive driving keyboard lead. On the B side, Mat/Matix starts it off with the deeply aquatic Bay Breeze, which swings along with textured padding with an epic wet guitar solo by Liam Kevany. Moon B pours Marina Player directly into the harbor with a beautifully mutant and tranquil theme that would seem perfectly-placed in a moody montage scene of a speedboat cruising silkily along the waters at night. Jomeo Pugz ups the ante in Hidden Zone, a drum machine love anthem that describes the nerve- racking and inspiring aspects of new lust, romance, and the possibilities created between two potential mates sharing space together—yet alone. Deregulate by Elegant Borzoi closes it out with sweeping synths, loose grooves, and the subtle and sweet vocal accompaniment of Megan Doherty (of Social Lovers). This LP is dedicated to designer, artist and friend, Trevor Tarczynski (RIP). The title “Night Palms” was a recurring theme in his work, and the jacket cover was created from his archives.- Night Palms is a compilation LP dedicated to Night Palms’ artist Trevor Tarczynski (RIP)- 7 individual tracks written, performed and produced by Brian Ellis, BOY DUDE, XL Middleton feat. Ghost, Mat/Matix, Moon B, Jomeo Pugz, Elegant Borzoi feat. Megan Doherty- Cover/Jacket Artwork by Trevor Tarczynski with layout by Margaux Solano and inner label artwork/layout by Michael Steffen

Relax

auteur:

a propos:
One of the leading producers and instrumentalists in Brazilian music, Alexandre Kassin has produced roughly 100 records for singers, including Marisa Monte and Bebel Gilberto, recorded with Sean O’Hagan (Stereolab, High Llamas) and made a full album based on Nintendo Game Boy sounds. He has played bass for Caetano Veloso’s live shows and conceptualized the Orchestra Imperial band. His new album, Relax, is rooted in dreams and surrealism, yet grounded enough to reach listeners where they are. Across 11 tracks, Kassin ?irts with Latin rhythms, Brazilian pop, and straight-ahead soul, using this varied stylistic array to tell imagined tales of death, drug usage, politics and fate. There’s a dichotomy to Relax, with Kassin’s arrangements often feeling bright and danceable, yet with incredibly sullen themes. It’s a record that speaks directly to the yin and yang of everyday life, and the uncertainty that comes with simply existing. The Good Is A Big God, by singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Domenico Lancellotti, features contributions from Nina Miranda, Moreno Veloso, Pedro Sá and Sean O’Hagan. Son of composer Ivor Lancellotti, Domenico has collaborated with various MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) names such as Adriana Calcanho]o, Marcos Valle, Caetano Veloso and Fernanda Abreu, and also participates in several projects such as Orchestra Imperial, the +2’s (with Moreno Veloso and Kassin) and Ritmistas.A collection of re?ective samba partially inspired by a trip taken to a Brazilian national park called The Serra dos Órgãos, The Good Is A Big God frst began to take shape when Domenico was asked to take part in an artistic collaboration in the city of London during the 2012 Summer Olympics. There, he reunited with Sean O’Hagan after previously meeting during a show that paid homage to Tropicália. Before he took o? for London, Domenico sent O’Hagan a few musical sketches he’d done on guitar, by the time the Brazilian made it to the U.K., O’Hagan had string arrangements to accompany Domenico’s music. Domenico added lyrics to some of these songs once he returned to Brazil and with help from friend and label mate Kassin, and additional assistance from O’Hagan, the record was fnished. One can hear a sense of isolation and oneness with nature when listening to The Good Is A Big God. It’s the type of art that arrives in a calming stream of thought and is a much- needed respite from the rigors of everyday life.

Too Slow To Disco Brasil

photo:
a propos:
"Before slipping this LP on, you need to nail the AOR modus opeara ... That means: a Hawaiian shirt à la Magnum PI, loafers without socks as in Miami Vice, jump in your convertible and drive under the coconut trees. This is a sunset ride through Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Miami, Hawaii. Aloha!" Ed MottaToo Slow to Disco take a dive into an often overlooked side of Brazilian music: Brazilian soul, funk and AORWe’d like to introduce you to the compiler of our new Too Slow to Disco release, a giant of musical endeavour, the young nephew of Brazil’s legendary soul icon Tim Maia, the ‘Colossus of Rio’, as he’s known: Ed Motta. At the end of the 1980s Ed Motta burst upon the music scene as a major singer and one of the writers and producers in the band Conexão Japeri. He’s now fifteen albums into a career that hops from genre to genre, perhaps one of the savviest music makers and curators out there. He is a refined practitioner of jazz, funk, soul, AOR and much else besides, having worked with everyone from Gilles Peterson to Roy Ayers, 4Hero, Seu Jorge, Patrice Rushen, Greg Phillinganes, Bo Diddley, Incognito, Ryuichi Sakamoto and many other insanely talented musos. In this collector’s compilation, you’re coming on a kind of expert guided time travel mission – just picture yourself following Ed’s fingers as they trace along the sleeves in that massive library-sized vinyl vault of his. So we dart back through over two decades of music making, dancing in one style then the next from soul to funk to AOR, you’ll feel the air coming out of the horn section right the way through, and a mixologist’s golden touch tying everything together. The artists Ed has play-listed for you include über-obscure figures like Carlos Bivar or Gelson Oliveira & Luiz Ewerling – both of whose songs here derive from privately pressed albums – so rare they’re not even listed on Discogs! He’s also gathered together a real pantheon of Brazilian musical heroes like Rita Lee (who was part of the legendary Os Mutantes), Cassiano (one of the founders of Bossa Trio and Os Diagonais) and million sellers like Roupa Nova, lovingly referred to as ‘the Brazilian Toto’ (who would have thought that would become a compliment by 2018?)! And as ever with the Too Slow to Disco series, the artists might be new to you, but they’re always bringing a killer tune.Join us to discover another dimension of the Brazilian sound: TSTD Brasil - Compiled by Ed Motta.- Brazil edition of the critically acclaimed compilation series by DJ Supermarkt- Complied by Ed Motta and includes über-obscure figures like Carlos Bivar or Gelson Oliveira & Luiz Ewerling – both of whose songs here derive from privately pressed albums – so rare they’re not even listed on Discogs!- Comes in two formats: compact disc (with o-card) and heavy weight black double vinyl including MP3 download card
