Xenia França is a singer from Bahia, Brazil. She has been nominated for the 2018 Latin Grammy for this debut album Xenia, and for the song “Pra que me Chamas?”, a favorite among listeners. Part of an art scene concerned with reviving and disseminating the African-Brazilian culture, the singer became a reference of female empowerment and behavior, especially among black women.Xenia has performed at major Brazilian festivals, such as Recbeat, Coala, Coma and Queremos, among others. In 2018 she took to Central Park’s SummerStage Festival in NYC, and has also performed in Philadelphia and at the Pablo Toblón Theater, in Medellin, Colombia. Her first solo effort here, “Xenia”, is an essential album from contemporary Brazil, paying tribute to the sounds of the black diaspora, masterfully blending soul music with jazz, samba, r&b and electronic flavors, now available for the first time outside of Brazil!

The legendary Disk Union Japan and 180g present the best of today’s Brazilian music!A completely unique and beautiful album from contemporary Brazil blending soft pop, indie folk, sixties psychedelia, lo-fi and flavors of the brazilian Clube da Esquina!- First ever vinyl release of this top album out of contemporary Brazil- Essential solo effort from former member of Brazilian underground leaders Diesel, Udora and Transmissor- Analog recording process- 180g heavy vinyl, comes with download cardLeonardo Marques makes a kind of music that creates bucolic and romantic scenarios whose sound goes among indie folk, sixties psychedelia, lo-fi and the brazilian Clube da Esquina. As Chicago’s Dusty Groove tell us about the album: “A really beautiful album from contemporary Brazil – but one that resonates with some of the best soft pop elements of the late 60s and early 70s! Vocals are in English and Portuguese, and the instrumentation is this fantastic blend of light elements given a really airy spin – almost as if Nick DeCaro and Sean O'Hagan got together in the studio to work on a set that has slight bossa inspirations – but is something completely unique! This is the first we've ever heard of Leonardo Marques, but we'll sure be watching out for him in the future – as he's got this way of embracing so many elements of things we love, yet never stays slavishly in their own territory – wending his way beautifully through songs that include "Ainda E Cedo", "All The Hearts", "Nao Te Escuto", "The Girl From Bainema", "Um Sopro", "In Your Arms", and "So Que Me Enfeita".”

Abu Ali

Following the success of the special Record Store Day ‘Abu Ali’ edition, we are reissuing a standard version of Ziad Rahbani's mythical Disco 12" which was originally issued in Lebanon in 1978. This reissue on black vinyl features the original artwork, with remastered audio. A highly sought-after EP fetching high prices on the market, Abu Ali is a must-have for all fans of Lebanese groove and collectors of Arabic Funk.Ziad Rahbani is a cultural icon in Lebanon. The musician, pianist and producer is also a renowned playwright and a political activist, one of the most important exponent of the lebanese left-wing counterculture to emerge from the 70s.Coming out of an illustrious artistic dynasty (his father is the famous composer and musician Assi Rahbani, member of group The Rahbani Brothers and his mother is the legendary Middle East Diva, Fairuz), Ziad Rahbani started his music career during his late teens, composing music for his mother.Rahbani quickly spread his wings further. He started producing his own music during the early 70s and released records under his own name at 17. Among these was "Abu Ali" recorded in Greece at the EMI Studios in Athens in 1978 with a full orchestra (there he also recorded his mother's album "Wahdon") and released it as a limited run EP for the lebanese market. Legend has it that the album was only pressed at 500 unit hence its rarity. The result is a fabulous New York-meets-Beyrouth Disco exctasy developing over two 13-min tracks and one of the most collectible albums on the international dance and disco scene which Wewantsounds is happy to finally make available.

A Bridge Between Lovers

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Following up on the 2017 debut EP 'Don't Get Me Wrong’, Dazion returns with his second release on Second Circle. On his latest EP; 'A Bridge Between Lovers’, we hear the Dutch multi -instrumentalist take even more unexpected swerves and turns in the form of fi ve new tracks recorded in his home studio in Den Haag. Setting himself loose from any musical confines, his process develops spontaneously; a Spanish guitar connects with an Indonesian wind instrument, wood sticks are channelled through a gritty sampler, while weird drum pattErns make their way out of Alesis HR 16-B and Yamaha computers. The results of these recordings are a fluid yet familiar Dazion sound; typically utilising electronic and organic sounds in his own distinctIve way. As with its predecessor, the tracks on ‘A Bridge Between Lovers’ are heavily rhythmically fuelled as well as rich in melody. Not least during another collaborati on with the Portugese vocalist Paulo on the alluring opening track ‘Eu Ñ ao Sei’, where Dazion again radiates what he himself calls, his "musical message of love to everyone".

The Sound Of On Records 1987-1989

photo:
a propos:
The late 1980s in the rainbow nation was a time when disco was mutating into what was becoming known as Bubblegum: pop music aimed at the black population of South Africa.Bubblegum was a response to Western styles like disco and the fast spreading house music which originally came from the black ghettos of Chicago and New York. When the second Summer of Love took over the UK in 1988, first house, and other electronic music styles conquered South Africa as well. DIY - do it yourself - a motto that had already appeared in the punk movement, lifted the young local scene to the next level. With a minimal set up - keyboards, some drum machines and samplers it was suddenly possible to make music without having to rent expensive studios.

Dila

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Far Out Recordings proudly presents the first and only album from the mysterious Brazilian vocal sensation Dila (pronounced "Jee-la"). Having reportedly died in a car crash shortly after the album's release in 1971, there is very little known about the woman behind the voice. But the joyous music Dila left behind, gives us a picture as good as any, of a powerful feminine soul at the top of her game. The liner notes on the elusive original LP, written by composer Arnoldo Medeiros attest: "Friend, look out! Because when this girl starts to sing, you're in trouble. Hold the railing so you don't fall down the stairs, because she's coming this way and shaking up everything." Arranged and produced by Durval Ferreira, alongside his studio band affectionately known as "Os Grillos" (The Crickets), Dila (1971) is a rare glimpse into the authentic soulful Samba sound of Rio's favelas in the late sixties and early seventies.A blast of funky, percussive Brazilian breaks, scorching hot brass and swing-laden piano, the music is as iconic as the album's stark cover, as is clear on opener 'Inez', composed by The Crickets' bassist Romildo. There's a fantastic interpretation of the Ivan Lins classic 'Madalena' (made famous by Elis Regina), a moving version of the Tom Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes classic 'O Morro Não Tem Vez', and a number of sunny original compositions by Arnold Madeiros, who's other writing credits include music for Marcos Valle, Wanderlea, Evinha and Dom Salvador. With original LPs extremely hard to come by, this rare treasure of Brazilian soul, which fans of Gal Costa, Celia, Evinha and Elis Regina will love, gets a much-deserved official reissue: remastered and pressed to 180g vinyl.

Live At Nancy Jazz Pulsations 1973

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
It was in 1973, on the 14th of October, late in the afternoon; on a pretty Sunday under the Big Top in the heart of the “Parc de la Pépinière”, in Nancy; it was the “premiere”, the world first hearing, and it has so far remained the only one commissioned by composer and trumpet player lvan Jullien, for the first international Nancy Jazz Pulsations festivalIn order to complete this work of composition and orchestration, Ivan asked the great Eddie Louiss on organ, and chose to do without a double bassist who would have been drowned in a telluric outburst, for the best drummers in Europe and beyond had accepted out of sympathy to offer their contribution to such a festival. The only melodist with Louiss was the English John Surman (born in 1944) here on soprano saxophone, discharging torrents of incandescent lava.Conversing with drums, cymbals, xylophones, kettledrums, vibraphones, tumbas, djembes and all other percussive things that you’ll like to imagine – a bunch of talents such as those of the French André Ceccarelli, Daniel Humair or Bernard Lubat, the New Yorker Stu Martin, who reminds of Paul Motian in his “breaks”, South African Louis Mo-Holo, young Lamont Hampton, the great trombonist “Slide” Hampton’s son and the Malagasy Franck Raholison, the Senegalese Lamine Konte. And we will scrupulously refrain from omitting the four musketeers, here representing percussion in classical music, namely the Percussion Quartet of Paris under the leadership of Mr. Lucien Lemaire.
