Nobody Has To Know

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
On “Nobody Has To Know”, his fifth album for All City Records, the versatile French producer created music that reflects on the various aspects of a secret relationship pulling from R&B,New Jack Swing and Funk.Stylistically “Nobody Has To Know” picks up from the Future Funk style Onra originated on his 2010's “Long Distance” (and its 2012 companion EP “Deep In The Night” for Fool's Gold). Where those two releases mined the early and mid parts of the 1980s for ideas and references, the new album digs into late '80s and early '90s jams for smoother and richer sounds. Bolstering the record are two talented multi-instrumentalists, New Zealand's Lewis McCallum and Belgium's Pomrad, who bring touches of virtuosity to Onra's trademark smooth arrangements. The result is a record that, like its theme, oscillates between tender, torrid and tumultuous.

Solar Shield

auteur:

a propos:
Solar Shield kicked off the Austin Boogie Crew Records discography with a bang in 2014 with his "Reesis" 45 -- so much so that the labelhad to press it 3 times to meet demand. Now , Austin boogie Crew present his much anticipated selftitled LP with 9 tracks of laid back modern funk!Austin, TX, musician Chris McDowell is a wonder on the keys. Under his Solar Shield moniker Texas producer Chris McDowell creates exuberant compositions that elegantly walk a tightrope between modern funk and electronic beat music. This quality nine track release features songs created between 2011 and 2013, settling into the modern funk cannon of 2018 with ease.

Luna's Groove

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Heads may not know it, but Olmos (real name Oliver Graham) has been one of the busiest influencers on Australia’s underground music culture this side of the 90s. Through family-run operation Paradise Loft Records, he has quietly imported thousands of dead stock Disco, Boogie and early House records into crates across the country - affording tastemakers a slice of digging culture only a trip to NYC would previously have allowed. Thus Ol’s arrival at Gulf Point gleams with the jewels you’d expect from a producer with such inspired tastes. These are set free on “Luna’s Groove”, a star-chasing collection of nouveau post-disco works, crafted in earnest with dancers in mind. Raised on a healthy diet of Levan mixes and M+M dubs, his own use of juicy Moog basses, progressive arrangements and glittering melodies have bought forth an EP which modestly harnesses the New York Garage aesthetic he loves so dearly.Three Olmos originals are teamed with an astral mix by Benny Badge, reigniting his Freekwency namesake to redo the title with cosmic pads and the gravitational pull of a timeless 808 sequence. Jack Doepel, known for his work with Melbourne's rising Krakatau, also makes an appearance on sax - landing this interstellar mission somewhere on Jupiter’s fifth moon, Rhea. This is Ollie and Benny’s second meeting, the first being Freekwency’s “Flip The Coin” on Voyeurhythm. Recorded in 2011, their collaboration fuelled a simmering Boogie revival and remains in high demand alongside similar transmissions from Tom Noble, Psychic Mirrors and PPU. Since then, Olmos’ evolution has scored him some deserved points of his own - “Luna’s Groove” however, may have just hit the bulls-eye.

Movin' On

photo:
a propos:
Slikk Tim, (AKA Gary Gritness and DopeGems) strikes back with his new persona on Arcane - Morris Mobley, and offers a mix of Modern Soul flavors, razor sharp vocals, and Grant Green-tinted guitar licks; served with shiny, luxurious synths, and a pounding 808.Built upon solid personal compositions and a strong lyrical sense, backed by suave rhythms and sophisticated chords. Morris Mobley ventures into a sharp, neo-noir vibe, paying tribute to the Johnny 'Guitar' Watson tradition; ranging from nostalgic love to nocturnal moods throughout this eight-tracker he single-handedly produced.

Stardust

photo:
a propos:
Stardust is a magical collaboration of new music from Germany’s tiptop funk duo First Touch that combine forces with native master blaster Bybo Funk. This four song up-tempo EP brings charismatic chord arrangements along with sophisticated and infectious basslines together for cosmic dance floor boogie. Hold It Down is a 110 BPM dance floor glider, laying a slick bass line down for bright synth chords for bounce over before a slick breakdown. Something In Me is a 120BPM dance floor fire starter, jumping out with a hard-hitting baseline and drum arrangement intro before laying down crispy tiptop synth chords and a masterful solo and breakdown. Title track Stardust delivers what everybody would expect from a collaboration like this, a 110BPM bass heavy boulevard funk anthem that will have the dance floor leaning side to side with a sophisticated gangster lean! Trippin’ is a 115BPM lovers groove with deep and sophisticated chord arrangements wrapped in thick synth bass lines uplifting dance floors with a cosmic love boogie bounce, closing out this collaboration with a sonic baptism carving out new directions in modernfunk

This Is My Force Funk Sound

photo:
a propos:
Zackey Force Funk deserves (and receives) a lot of respect. If he’s not robbing banks with baseball bats and roaming the streets for fat cats to hustle, you can usually find him leaning over the turntables of a dirty dirty late-night discotheque. Take off your kevlar, put down those batons – Zackey Force Funk comes in peace! This time... This eighteen track album compiles early demos and rarities originally included in DJ KUTMAH’s “This Is The Force Funk Sound” [HNR03] megamix created in Summer 2009. Each song has been digitally remastered for the special release of “THIS IS MY FORCE FUNK SOUND” [HNR73]. Available on limited-edition 12” picture disc in a shrinkwrapped full color cardboard jacket (not screenprinted). Things Are Happening

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Things are happening. It’s a perpetual truth and something of a mysterious, even ominous, sentiment as it applies to XL Middleton’s follow up to “Tap Water.” Fittingly, the content of “Things Are Happening” strays down darker or more cynical paths than its predecessor, and in doing so takes the modern funk ethos as a whole beyond tried and true formulas such as love songs or spiritual anthems. The grooves remain uptempo, the synth work is still warm and percussive. But, there’s a heavier story to tell, and greater truths to face. The album opens with the uptempo, lowrider-ready “Never Have Too Many Freaks.” Upon frst glance it’s a hedonistic ode to maintaining multitudes of willing women for carnal conquest, but further listens reveal the story of a man in search of love, let down too many times and thus led away from the pursuit of romance. “Look Who’s Talkin’” details the strenous nature of socializing as an introvert, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics seated atop a warbly electro-funk instrumental. This theme is explored again, in a more introspective fashion, on the album’s closer, “They Don’t Wanna Leave.” On “Better Friend” (feat. Moniquea), XL plays witness to those who would invade social circles for personal gain - an all too common sight in the music business, perhaps foreshadowing a future hip hop album by dropping a few bars before the song sizzles to a close. Him and Zackey Force Funk team up on “Paradise Of Pavement,” an anthem for the highs and lows of living in LA, framed by cosmic chords and grinding synth bass tones. “Purple Sheets” resonates with a slow Linn drum bounce as XL’s vocoder fnally offers a moment of unbridled love/lust, adding a dimension to the album more akin to “Tap Water” than anything else on the project. Some might argue that the internalized nature of “Things Are Happening” is badly timed, with the hyper-politicized environment we are now living in almost demanding social commentary in art above all else. However, this album is a reminder that, no matter who the president is or what global woes we are facing, we also exist outside of the collective mind and have our own individual stories to tell.
