Stand Up For Love

The UK's funk brothers are back! After 2 years working hard in their studio in Leeds in the north of England, The Haggis Horns are ready to drop album number 5! "Stand Up For Love" is released worldwide on their own label Haggis Records on the 22nd May on Vinyl, CD and Digital. They should have added a subtitle to it...back to roots! This one has them doing what they've done best from day one...kicking the funk! plus the spotlight is truly on the band - no special guests, just Haggis Horns band members past and present including "Hot Damn!" singer John McCallum who features on seven out of the nine tracks making this their most vocal-led album to date. The Haggis Horns first hit the music scene in 1999 as both a band and brass section, the horns making their first recorded appearance on The New Mastersounds debut album that year. Featuring some of the finest brass and rhythm section players in the UK, Haggis Horns musicians have played live and recorded with a host of major music artists including Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lou Donaldson, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Martha Reeves, Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, The Cinematic Orchestra, Morcheeba, Roots Manuva, Finley Quaye and Nightmares On Wax.After five singles plus two albums on UK independent label First Word Records, since 2015, they've been releasing their music on their own Haggis Records Label. In 2020 they've expanded the label to include solo jazz albums from band members Malcolm Strachan (trumpet) and George Cooper (keyboards/piano) and also released an EP by soul singer Lucinda Slim but three years after their last full-band release, the time is right for another Haggis Horns album."Stand Up For Love" is their 5th album and as always it drips with funk and soul magic which show the band's love for early/mid 70's artists like Kool & The Gang, Fred Wesley & The JB's, The Blackbyrds, The Fatback Band, The Meters and Sly & The Family Stone. From pure funk club bangers like "Shoulder To Shoulder" and "Haggis Express" to deeper soulful sounds of "Ain't Nothing But Love In The End", "Give It Up" and "Ain't Loving One Another" (which features one of many stand out vocal performances by John McCallum) it's a mix that makes sure all musical bases are covered. Also, original percussionist/conga player Sam Bell is back recording with the band and once again adding some Latin fire to the Haggis Horns sound. There's even a soulful reggae track on this one, the album title song "Stand Up for Love". It's the first time the band has featured a reggae number on a release since their debut back in 2007.Two decades on, numerous releases, hundreds of gigs worldwide, this fifth album proves that The Haggis Horns are still kings of the hill when it comes to UK Funk and Soul.

One Of These Days

photo:
a propos:
Almost 20 years since they formed The Haggis Horns maintain their premier position at the top table of UK funk/soul bands. Their ever growing fan base, their ability to attract a new younger crowd while maintaining their original following, their release of quailty music on a regular basis and a busy diary of gigs both at home and abroad ensures they're as popular as anytime in their long life.Their storty is well documented elsewhere so no need to dwell on it too much here. Just look at the artists they've worked with and you can see the calibre of the band. These include Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamiroquai, Lily Allen, Lou Donaldson, John Legend, The Roots, Martha Reeves and Roots Manuva to name a few.In November 2017 The Haggis Horns Release their fourth studio album since their debut in 2007 and once again it's on their own Haggis Records. It's called "One Of These Days" and as expected, it features the usual heavy funk/jazz-funk dance floor bangers but also a nice mix of other genres, including their first recordings with a rapper, a proper disco/boogie gem and some sweet laid back 70's style soul. The usual Haggis Horns musical stew that showcases all their favourite influences from the soul, funk, hip hop and jazz traditions. For deep soul lovers check out the title track "One Of These Days" featuring original Haggis Horns "Hot Damn!" vocalist John McCallum. Also try the second single from the album "World Gone Crazy" featuring their other long time singer Lucinda Slim for another slice of deep soul magic. Lucinda also features on lead vocals on the previously mentioned disco/boogie track "New York Beat", a perfect synthesis of jazz-funk guitar licks, analogue keyboard sounds, punchy brass and disco diva harmonised vocals. There's a new rockier guitar sound on this LP reminiscent of Dennis Coffey's mid 70's b-boy funk instrumentals, especially on "Gonna Be Alright". Talking of b-boys, the band have collaborated with rapper/MC Doc Brown on the first single from the LP, released in summer 2017, the old skool funk/rap/hip-hop block party anthem "Take It Back". He also features on the other hip-hop/funk track "What's It All About". Shades of early Hip-Hop here from 1979/80 back when the first MC's rhymed over music played by live bands, like the Sugarhill Records house band on that label."One Of These Days" proves once again why The Haggis Horns are still top after two decades...they write their own songs, they don't follow the crowd, they stay ahead of the curve and they're always willing to take musical risks. And long may it continue

Take It Back

photo:
a propos:
The Haggis Horns will release their fourth studio album in September 2017 and as a little teaser, they drop a summer single worldwide on June 9th via their own Haggis Records, a feel good bouncing hip-hop/funk jam featuring guest UK MC/rapper Doc Brown. Think back to the dawn of hip-hop in the early 1980s when the first rap singles featured the Sugarhill Records house band laying down heavy funk grooves for MCs like The Furious Five and Treacherous 3 and you get the flavour. No-nonsense party hip-hop/funk for b-boys, soul sisters and funk brothers! And keeping with that old school flavour, it will come with a limited edition 7" vinyl pressing alongside the digital single and feature an instrumental version on the b-side with the Horns cutting loose on the solos. Now in their 19th year, The Haggis Horns are still as popular and busy as ever playing clubs and festivals around the UK and internationally and finishing this new album for autumn release. Expect another slab of heavy funk and sweet soul with longtime vocalists John McCallum (Corinne Bailey Rae band) and Lucinda Slim on various featured tracks plus the hip-hop collaborations with Doc Brown. As always, their famous super tight rhythm section holds it down alongside one of the UK's best horn sections of the last 2 decades whose gig/recording credits include Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Jamiroquai, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and Lily Allen.

What Comes To Mind

photo:
a propos:
The UK's favourite funk/soul brothers release their long awaited third album "What Comes To MInd" worldwide on the 25th Sept 2015. This one drops on their own independant record label Haggis Records and features a host of special guest artists including vocalists Lucinda Slim (Zap Mama), John McCallum (Corinne Bailey Rae band) and John Turrell (Smoove & Turrell) plus New mastersounds bass player Pete Shand and UK conga/percussion legend Snowboy. The Haggis Horns first hit the music scene in 1999 as both a band and brass section, the Horns making their first recorded appearance on The New Mastersounds debut album that year. Featuring some of the finest brass and rhythm section players in the UK, Haggis Horns musicians have played live and recorded with a host of major music artists including Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lou Donaldson, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Martha Reeves, Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, The Cinematic Orchestra, Morcheeba, Roots Manuva, Finley Quaye and Nightmares On Wax.With five singles on UK independent label First Word Records plus two albums ("Hot Damn!" in 2007 and "Keep On Movin'" in 2010), they released their first title on their own Haggis Records in summer 2015, the aptly titled "Return Of The Haggis EP"."What Comes To Mind" is packed full of feelgood funk, soul and boogie that pays homage to the band's musical heroes of the 1970's - Kool & The Gang, Donald Byrd, The Blackbyrds, The Mizell Brothers & Earth Wind & Fire. There's plenty of dancefloor filling funk for the clubs - "Outta My Head", "It Ain't What You Got", "I Can't Stop The Feeling" - plus heavy funk instrumentals like "Return Of The Haggis" where the band get the chance to stretch out and cut loose on the solo sections. For deep soul heads, check the slower tempo gospel tinged vocal track "Give Me Something Better". British soul past or present doesn't come much better than this!New label. New album. The Haggis Horns have well and truly returned...
