To celebrate 20 years of Barely Breaking even, they have been hard at work re-stocking a few of their most sought-after back catalogue gems. The second volume in Kon & Amir's famed 'Off Track' series, this 2008 collection of obscure classics was dedicated to the New York borough of Queens.The duo's fanatical love of music and inexhaustible appetite for the next sound puts them in a perfect position to select three disc's worth of magical soul, funk and Afro-beat, spanning three decades from the 60's through to the '80s. This eclectic and wonderful compilation sees Kon taking us on a magical disco mystery tour, peppering his mix with his customary re-edits. The very Definition of Deepfunk this record was a huge spin for Keb Darge in the Early 2000s. Not only brilliant, but very very rare ($2000+), respected by collectors and a dancefloor smasher. Recorded for Philadelphia's Virtue Records (Named after it's owner Frank Virtue) and kindly licensed to us from his daughters after a long search for the cleanest copy we could find to master from (minty). Madcliff recorded this, their only album in 1977. Singer, Songwriter, Drummer, Bassist and Keyboardist Chris Hills wrote all of the songs, two of them with Chico Waters with whom he had co written with on Herbie Mann's Embryo label in 1971.The album has a broad range of Soul, Funk and Disco tracks. It contains the original versions of two tracks that Chris would go on to record as a member of the Players Association later the same year. The early cuts of "I Like It" and "Goin' To The Disco" have a more raw approach than the better known and more polished versions. The killer cut is the funk bomb "You Can Make The Change".This track was made popular by Keb Darge at his legendary deep funk nights. "It Takes A Little More" was co written with Danny Weiss with whom Chris would work with as The Players Association and then as the group Feel in the early 80's. This album is one of the rarest that we have released in our classic albums series. Original Vinyl copies sell for around £200.
