Paz Are Back

BBE present the cult classic Paz Are Back from Brtish Jazz collective Paz.Recorded during the summer of 1980 and originally released in 1982 on Spotlight Records, 'PAZ are Back' was the second (and arguably the finest) album by the London jazz collective, founded by vibraphonist, composer and arranger Dick Crouch. Known for their original jazz-funk and latin stylings, the band held a weekly Sunday residency at The Kensington pub in Holland Park for over 8 years, becoming a fixture at many London venues throughout the 70's and 80's, most notably Ronnie Scott's.For PAZ, band leader Dick Crouch assembled a group of the finest jazz musicians working in London at the time. Piano, keyboard and synth player Geoff Castle was a mainstay of the band throughout the years, as well as playing and recording with George Coleman, Ian Dury & Georgie Fame to name but a few. He also composed the highly original and energetic track 'Moonchild', featured on this album.Sax and flute player Ray Warleigh enjoyed a successful three decade career (sadly, he passed away in 2015), playing alongside Dusty Springfield, Marianne Faithfull, Scott Walker and Stevie Wonder as well as 9 years with PAZ. The full breadth of his musical dexterity is on display here, from the gritty alto sax solos featured on 'Laying Eggs' to his eerie home-made panpipes on 'Horrors'.Guitarist Ed Speight also worked extensively with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, as well as performing 'Tubular Bells' with Mike Oldfield on the QEH and BBC2. Now an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, Ed taught guitar and keyboard harmony between 1988 and 2010. Bass player Ron Mathewson is best known for his years spent working with Ronnie Scott, but he also recorded with Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Ben Webster and Bill Evans (to whom the stunning 'I Can't Remember' is dedicated). His absence on one album track is noted in its title 'Where is Ron?', so called because he realised the song required no bassline (as the original liner notes stated: "this awareness of when not to play is part of his genius").Appearing with the band for the first time on 'PAZ are Back', drummer Frank Gibson was perhaps better known for accompanying Leo Sayer, David Essex and Dusty Springfield, although jazz was always his first love. Following his time in the UK and touring the world, Frank returned to his native New Zealand, where he won three 'Best Jazz Album' awards and performed at the 1990 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.Capturing a group of prodigiously talented musicians at the height of their powers, 'PAZ Are Back' features timeless original compositions from almost all the band members, as well as a unique cover of 'Everywhere Calypso' by Sonny Rollins and a truly frenetic, heavily improvised version of jazz standard 'Dancing In The Dark'. A band who remained steadfastly resistant to being pigeonholed, incorporating a multitude of influences before 'fusion' became fashionable, PAZ's music stands the test of time magnificently, as evidenced by the staggering demand for original copies of this album.Remastered and packaged with the original artwork, BBE are excited to make the magic of PAZ available to a new generation of fans.– Album tracks sampled by Madlib & DJ Vadim among others– Copies of the original fetching 3 figure sums on Discogs– Featuring a group of London's all-time finest jazz musicians at the height of their powers– Full press , radio & social media campaign

Kon returns with a heavily anticipated multi track remix of Wood Brass & Steel's Funkanova, unearthing vocals that didn't make the original while beautifully stretching out and breaking down the lush layers of this loft classic. On the flip, is his take on the bands more obscure cover of Boz Scagg's Low Down, emphasizing a killer bassline to keep the dance floor rockin'.

It combines swung high hats and trumpet stabs with moody vocals and guitar chords - all underpinned by a powerful walking bassline. B-side 'Trees' is more indebted to hip hop, and carries with it the influence of classic Ninja Tune, DJ Shadow and The Herbaliser. Again, a deep bassline is used, which proves to be the driving force behind the track's boom bap drums and glassy, reverberant keys.In the hands of the right DJ, these versatile tracks could sound great in a variety of settings - from jazz clubs, to soul and funk nights, to bass-orientated club nights. Ash Walker has recently gained some really impressive support from across the scene, from DJs such as Gideon Coe and Gilles Peterson at BBC Radio 6 Music, Dom Servini at Wah Wah 45s and Rob Louie at Tru Thoughts.ASHXXX001 will be released as a limited edition white label 7" ONLY

Sugar Daddy

photo:
a propos:
Strut present the first in a series of essential original LP reissues exploring rare and under-rated African, Latin and Caribbean music classics, curated by Duncan Brooker. In January 2017, the series kicks off with ‘Sugar Daddy’, an experimental highlife / disco outing by Nigerian highlife guitarist Joe King Kologbo. Building his career as a composer and player with Eastern Star Dance Band at their residency at the Atlantic Hotel in Aba, Eastern Nigeria, Joe King Kologbo was forced to flee to Ghana when the Biafran War broke out in 1967. As his son Oghene recalls, “when war came, everything just scatter. He lost his house, everything.”Joe King played with a variety of bands in Ghana including Real Ruby’s, a jazz highlife big band, before returning to Lagos in 1971. By the time he recorded the ‘Sugar Daddy’ LP for the tiny Electromat label in 1980, he was one of the older musicians on the circuit. Oghene Kologbo remembers, “My Mum used to say, ‘I hope you don’t go and play guitar everywhere and play around, don’t go and be Sugar Daddy!’ All my father’s friends nicknamed him ‘Sugar Daddy’ so he did the song in a fun way. He was a nice man. He never did ‘playboy’.” “Since he was based in the East during his early days, he was not as well known nationally as some of the other highlife players of the time,” continues Oghene,”so it’s nice that this album is coming out again. It brings back good memories.” Joe King Kologbo’s ‘Sugar Daddy’ is released in its original artwork and features new interviews with Oghene Kologbo and Sonny Akpan of The Funkees. The album comes remastered by The Carvery, with vinyl pressed at Pallas.- First ever reissue of sought-after Nigerian highlife / disco original LP- Officially licensed from Joe King Kologbo estate- Includes the killer 15-minute DJ track ‘Sugar Daddy’- New package features all original artwork and new interviews with Oghene Kologbo and Sonny Akpan of The Funkees

Outta My Head

photo:
a propos:
Long celebrated as the hottest funk band around, with a sustained tenure of fiery singles and a distinctive northern funk sound, The Haggis Horns are coming at you with their latest track! Exclusive to Stutter & Twitch, 'Outta My Head' has been re-recorded and re-released; renovating HH' tantalizing sound into an, 'ass shaking' hit for the ages! 3rd March will see The Horn's twelfth release in as many years, with STR004 marking our funkiest release to date!Side A, 'Outta My Head' gives you The Haggis Horn's sound that we all know and love; bringing a classic, carefree warmth just in time for spring, with a rejuvenated angle! Destined to be an instant classic, the seven-piece have besieged the track with ample horns, enticing keys, frenzied backing vocals all in a killer verse/chorus/solo combo. A contagious sing-a-long and a party starter, all in one! Side B 'Give Me Something Better' is an example of established producer/artist, Werkha shying away from the 'electronica norm' of decapitating funk standards of their soul. By adsorbing the rhythm, and imparting a creative flair and organic sounds with an infectious curiosity, Werkha places the funk innovators in an augmented light. After a decade of performing at some of the hottest venues on the globe, and with every name who has an agenda for funk, The Haggis Horn's addictive sound and live force has rumbled every joint imaginable. The harmonious seven-piece have conquered most of Europe preserving a legendary presence, with slots on Kendal Calling, Edinburgh Fringe, Cambridge Jazz Festival, 02 Academy, Leeds, Y Not Festival, etc. In addition, the globetrotting act has recorded and supported the likes of Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Take That, Mark Ronson and Elbow across the world, and received airtime from BBC Radio 2, Radio 6, Reform Radio and Craig Charles Funk & Soul. 2017 sees another huge year for The Haggis Horns, and the hype for one helluva anticipated drop has only just begun.

I Wanna Love

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Growing up in Jamaica, young Rowland Abrahams loved dancing to James Brown so much that he earnt himself the nickname 'Papas' Got'. He later moved to Paris and in 1979 more or less single-handedly recorded the 'I Wanna Love' LP on the RGR label. Admittedly not an album with a heavy yield, the only pearl being the title track which Rocafort Records are releasing as a 12" with an exclusive Al Kent edit on the B side.No rocket science involved here, just pure killer afro-disco-funk groove from start to finish.Urgent funky guitar riffs, thumping drums and a strong hint of late 70s euro-disco fueled by the slightly unintelligible lyrics delivered with a Frenchie patois twist.

Love In Beats

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Omar has a totally unique, individual style and sound still marks him out as a future thinking and utterly unrivaled artist, who has collaborated with so many legendary names that it would be foolish to deny his worldwide reputation - who would dare contradict the likes of Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Carleen Anderson, Angie Stone, Common and fellow fans and followers like Maxwell and Jarrod Lawson?Following on from 2013's album The Man, 2016 sees his new long player further cement this undeniable reputation. Love In Beats is Omars' 8th studio album of his long, illustrious career and may just be the most eclectic & varied to date. Somewhat more electronic in it's conception and sound than it's predecessor, Love In Beats incorporates soul, Caribbean rhythms, an undercurrent of funk, with touches of zouk, a jazzy waltz, spoken word and also features collaborations with Us soul legend Leon Ware, Blue Note pianist Robert Glasper, grime MC Ty, Guadeloupe born singer Jean-Michele Rotin, and Uk soultress Natasha Watts, The Floacist and Mayra Andrade, the Cape Verdean born singer who lives and records in Paris.Co produced by Scratch Professer, Omars Grammy winning brother, this collection should create excitement worldwide, the sounds are varied - but all have Omars' unique fingerprint on them, style and substance beautifully merged!

Ceddo

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
For our second release we brought back to life African movie soundtrack "Ceddo" - composed by one of our favourite African artists, Manu Dibango. 6 tracks full of Funk. With a great story behind.... now it's getting a full vinyl re-issue!"The film takes place during the 17th century : period of slave-trading and of the introduction of Christianity and Islam in West Africa. The adherents of these religions all desired and hoped to pack their buildings, mosques or churches,by whatever means necessary. Arms and alcohol began to appear, as well as shoddy godds --- gadgets from another era. Anyone with a rifle tracked down and trated men, women and children. Man became money. After having converted the royal family and government dignitaries, the Imam encounters the refusal of the "Ceddo". For the Ceddo, adhering to Islam or to Catholicism would mean renouncing African spiritualism, giving up being themselves. To accomplish his goals, the Imam usurps the throne with the complicity of the dignitaries --- similar to the coups d'Etat of our days. Combining spiritual and temporal power, the Imam reduces the recalcitrant to slavery in exchange for rifles. He obliges the others by force of arms to accept Islam. Ceddo is a film of reflexion, birnging together bits and pieces of facts and authentic events that took place in a period spanning the centuries up to the present day."

Spiritual Jazz 7: Islam

photo:
a propos:
"Spiritual Jazz 7: Islam - Esoteric, Modal and Progressive Jazz inspired by Islam 1957 - 1988"Songs ancient and divine - the seventh volume of our acclaimed Spiritual Jazz series examines the influence and impact of Islam on four decades of jazz innovation.Through Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, the civil rights era in America saw African American liberation politics famously associated with Islamic belief. This was not the first time that radical developments in African American cultural life had been widely and famously associated with Islam - that distinction belongs not to political or sporting giants, but to the progressive jazz musicians of the bebop generation. Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Sahib Shihab, Gigi Gryce, Idrees Sulieman, Ahmad Jamal, Yusef Lateef, all these legendary jazz pioneers - and countless more - were early converts to the spiritually charged Ahmadiyya school of Islam. Their faith profoundly influenced the music that they made, and the presence of prominent and innovative Muslim musicians at the heart of jazz culture in America has been recognised ever since. The tracks on this collection follow the story of Islam and jazz from the 1950s to the 1980s. Recorded by Muslim jazz musicians, they often draw specifically on Middle Eastern or Islamic music, dream of an esoteric or spiritual Afro-East, or invoke the landscape and sound worlds of Islamic Africa. Spiritual Jazz 7 presents a selection of visionary music – inspired by faith, powered by jazz.2LP gatefoldExtensive liner notes & picsCD with 24 page colour bookletMany tracks never before reissued

Hupendi Muziki Wangu?!

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
A Boogie classic from '81 on the legendary SAM label out of New York city! K.I.D. is the production pseudonym of British library record stalwart and Munich Machine member Geoff Bastow. Bastow's career has been an extremely colourful one seeing him work with various artists including Amanda Lear, Elton John, Donna Summer and La Bionda amongst many others. ''Hupendi Muziki Wangu?'' is Swahili for ''You Don't Like My Music?'' and the track has long been a classic with underground Disco/Boogie aficionados for many years and has been a staple in the record bags of many legendary jocks since it's release 35+ years ago. On the flipside we are treated to ''It's Hot'', another sleek cut of early 80's Boogie perfection aimed squarely at the dancers. Truthfully though, the A-side steals here the show here, take a listen - you'll see what we mean! Reissued in conjunction with SAM records, New York City. Fully remastered with all original 1981 label artwork intact.
