Afro Beat/Afro Flower

photo:
a propos:
7'' Limited Edition400 copiesBoth tracks are previously unreleasedFour Flies Records continues its 7” line-up with another de rigueur repechage that will have your dancefloor jump frantically up and down. Two freaky afro-flavoured tracks, written by Giuliano Sorgini and his partner in musical delices Alessandro Alessandroni. Recorded during a non-specified session which may be traced back to the recording of Sorgini’s UNDER POMPELMO and PAWNSHOP's first 7”. The sound and the ideas behind the music are exactly the same, even though there’s more rhythmic and percussive emphasis on both tracks. Two little precious gems, unreleased to this day, brought back to light and finally available for DJs and fans all over the world. Afrodelic breaks for your pleasure!

(Where Is The) Sunshine

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
For its third release, Chuwanaga goes back in the past with the reissue of “(Where Is The) Sunshine” by Kalima, a rare 7” originally released in 1981 and produced in Baltimore by Afro-American pianist and producer Derrick Amin. Part I on the A side and part II on the B side form a real journey, a beauty in its own style fusing jazz, soul and spirituality as well as political values.Back in the mid-seventies Derrick Amin brought together young musicians from his Afro-American Muslim community in Baltimore. He tells us: “all black music in America is a response to racism and slavery” and “(Where Is The) Sunshine” was their own answer, “a plaintiff query of one immerse in darkness. The darkness of lies, lies that deny the humanity, justice, and equality of people. It’s the impetus of this song”. He adds: “Kalima means “Word” or “Langage” in Arabic. The name was inspired by a quote from Imam W.D. Mohammad (the late Muslim American leader and erstwhile successor to Nation of Islam founder, Elijah Muhammad) who once said: “Words make people””.With its splendid vocal parts (thanks to vocalist Sabreen Shareef), a unique major-to-minor chord progression, subtle synthesizer melodies in the chorus and amazing electric piano and sax solos, it really is a very special release. It’s been discovered in a Motor City Drum Ensemble’s jazz set with Gilles Peterson at the J.A.W. Family Reunion in Berlin back in 2016. Still, one must not forget its yet poetic still political message now shared once again with the world. The question asked by Kalima sadly still remains as relevant in 2018: Where is the sunshine?

Chenar Le Blues

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Bongo Joe’s 45s series continues, presenting for the first time music from the past. This fifth single focusses on legendary Algerian kabyle rock band Abranis founded in 1967.The band pioneered the fusion of chaabi (traditional) music with 60s-70s western rock, proudly singing in their own berber kabyle language while wearing hippy rockers outfits. Their shows - in deeply influenced by Pan-Arabism conservative Algeria - were often cancelled by governors and the band once was arrested by the police, generating riots. They kept on playing and recording until mid 90s.This 45 presents two majors tracks from the band:Chenar Le Blues, released in 1977, was a big hit on Algerian national radio. The band’s response to The Doors.Avehri, released in 1983, shows the band’s obsession with merging different music styles with the North African tradition. This one goes strangely reggae.

Jhoom Le/Jamasa Roro

photo:
a propos:
Two tracks taken from Rush Hour Surinam Funk Force compilation. Indo-Surinamese singer, Cynthia’s “Jhoom Le" (1980) is wonderfully skewed synth disco gem! The track was previously only featured on the CD version of the comp. Another fav, Astaria's "Jamasa Roro" (1979), a driving Carribean style disco bomb, appears on the flip.
