Ultimate Yokota 1991-2019

photo:
a propos:
The Sound Of Vast imprint offers up a retrospective collection of cuts from Shinichiro Yokota (who had two tracks on Hunee's 'Sounds From The Far East' compilation for Rush Hour). None of these tracks have been pressed on vinyl before now. A loaded compilation full of choice bumps and positive House vibes recorded over the last 28yrs!The twelve-track collection ‘Ultimate Yokota 1991-2019’ traverses through Yokota’s emotive and playful house sound - employing infectious synth hooks, analogue drums, soulful vocals and an underlying positive energy throughout. Sound Of Vast shine a light on one of Japan’s unsung heroes of House. Designed as an introduction those unfamiliar with his impressive back catalogue, and for hardcore fans alike.Shinichiro Yokota: “In the late 80s my obsession towards House music began and the biggest influence I had was through Soichi Terada. I went to his house almost every week, and watched him perform his magic with synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers. I soon learned how to use them as well and started producing a variety of tracks. Many of the tracks produced during this time were released on CD or vinyl through ‘Far East Recording’. This project ‘Ultimate Yokota’ is a careful selection of tracks from the early 90’s which haven’t been released on vinyl ever. It is my 30 years chronicle. ‘TOKYO 018’ is a track Soichi and myself collaborated on for the first time in 15 years. Not all the tracks on this record where produced with Soichi, but it’s safe to say that all my tracks have been influenced by and ‘created’ together with him.Soichi Terada: ‘’Amongst the 90's Japanese house music that’s been re-evaluated in recent years, many people are highly recognizing "Do It Again". One thing that comes to my mind which I contribute to this song's producer, Shinichiro Yokota, is the excitement and cheers of the audience when I perform it in my live show. With just 7 notes of refrain making the dance floor really pop up. Thanks to that I had the opportunity to do over 120 live shows in various European cities. Many people mistakenly think "Do It Again" is a Soichi Terada's production because of the wrong credits on YouTube, but at least those of you who love this record will be reaffirming the beautiful sound that Shinichiro Yokota is creating. And Shinichiro Yokota, you "Did It Again"! That's what you are feeling.’’

photo:
a propos:
The second in a series of compilations by Jura Soundsystem (label head Kevin Griffiths) brings together music never before released on Vinyl and some sought after out of print titles. The LP broadens the scope of the first Volume and touches upon a number of genres moving fluidly through Ambient, Electro, Dub House, Slow Disco and Library music before ending with some star gazing Esoteric cuts. ‘Transmission Two’ is bookended by Carl Craig, whose ‘C Beams Glitter’ has never before been released on Vinyl, and the actor Jeff Bridges, who provides a perfect finale with a message of personal empowerment set to the music of Ivor Novello winning soundtrack composer Keefus Ciancia. In between you’ll find Aphex Twin protégé Bochum Welt, John Rocca of Freeez and Pink Rhythm, Library Music aficionado’s Daniele Patucchi and David Arch, a Jura Soundsystem edit of Sapho, Hitman from the Philly World music stable, Hirini Melbourne (a Maori composer, poet and Author) and a beautiful previously unreleased song from Zann. This Double LP is a sketchbook of music picked up on digging adventures from the mind behind Isle Of Jura with artwork from long standing designer Bradley Pinkerton.

Origens Da Luz

photo:
a propos:
Music From Memory is delighted to announce a retrospective of an artist long-loved by the label, Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Priscilla Ermel. Origens Da Luz brings together a selection of recordings drawn from a body of work that was originally recorded between 1986 and 1994.Priscilla was raised in a musical family in São Paulo and learned the cello and guitar at an early age. She then embarked on a deeply personal musical journey that would travel from origins rooted in Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque to recording the music of the natural world and the communities around her. A film-maker and anthropologist by training, Priscilla is a lifelong student of a universal music. Disillusioned with contemporary European classical music, she spent long periods living with indigenous populations in Brazil, collecting instruments that she would later combine with synthesizers and field recordings. After studying with the renowned Taoist master Liu Pai Lin, she integrated the slow-moving pace of Tai Chi into a music that connects intimately with a multiplicity of cultures at the same time that it unmistakably reflects her Brazilian soul.Combining sounds drawn from the history of Brazil with her own explorations of analogue sound technology, Priscilla’s music opens up a mystical space, where ancient and modern evolves into a new language. Compiled by John Gómez and released on 2xLP, Origens Da Luz offers a panoramic view of this artist’s unique and mesmerizing sound world.

Cadence Revolution: Disques Debs International Volume 2 1973-1981

photo:
a propos:
Strut present the second volume in a series of compilations taken from the archives of Disques Debs International, the longest-running and most prolific label of the French Caribbean. Set up by the late Henri Debs in the late ‘50s, the label has continued for over 50 years, releasing hundreds of records and playing a pivotal role in bringing the creole music of Guadeloupe and Martinique to a wider international audience. Volume 2 of the series focuses on the label’s ‘70s output and the development of the unique Cadence sound, pulling disparate influences into a Pan-Caribbean blend of rhythms, styles and languages that dominated the dancehalls, clubs and concerts of the decade. Based in a small but state-of-the-art studio on the first floor of Henri Debs’ Club 97-1, just outside Pointe-à-Pitre in the town of Gosier, the label hosted sessions from the cream of local and regional talent, hothousing ideas into over 100 LP and 45 releases over the decade that reflected an increasingly confident creole identity. Groups like Les Vikings, Super Combo and Typical Combo along with a host of lesser-known bands were in fierce but friendly competition in the bals, dances and concerts in Guadeloupe, across the region and into Metropolitan France. Haitian Compas, Congolese influences from le Ry-Co Jazz, cadence-lypso and reggae from Dominica and a heavy dose of jazz and Puerto Rican salsa were thrown into the mix alongside local biguine, quadrille and gwo ka to power an unrivalled recorded output. Compiled by Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) and Emile Omar (Roseaux), ‘Cadence Revolution’ is released in conjunction with Henri Debs et Fils and Air Caraibes. The package features previously unseen photos from the Debs archive with both formats featuring extensive liner notes and an interview with singer and trombonist Christian Zora (Les Maxel’s, Energy).- 2LP IN SINGLE SLEEVE WITH 4PP 12” BOOKLET- First in-depth compilation of Cadence music, an overlooked chapter in Caribbean musical history.- Second instalment in Strut’s exclusive series from the Disques Debs International vaults- Majority of tracks unreissued since their original release- Includes unseen photos, extensive liner notes and interviews

Patchwork

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Limited gatefold edition of 500 copies, including bonus 7" (Carlos Niño & Friends, Ivan 'Mamão’ Conti and WaH-ChU-KU)Rush Hour announces their second artist compilation Patchwork, curated by one of the label’s most loved family members, Sassy J. The Swiss DJ is the very embodiment of passion and long-standing dedication to the craft of the DJing, but also to the community surrounding the music that she lives and breathes. For the past fourteen years Sassy J has run the Patchwork night in her native Bern and in London, with guests ranging from Theo Parrish and Little Dragon to Floating Points and MF Doom invited to share their respective musical visions. Her collaborative approach stands out in a DJ world that is too often weighted in favour of promoting the individual. This compilation grows out that unique sensitivity, foregrounding a theory of curation that centres on long-term bonds, articulated through Sassy J’s personal relationships with the contributing artists.Patchwork speaks to the grass roots values that Sassy J espouses, showcasing music by many of the artists that have joined her throughout the years in clubs, on the radio, and at home. It is an expression of Sassy J’s individual musical path that casts its gaze firmly in the future: Patchwork is made up almost entirely of new and unreleased songs that are exclusive to this collection. Patchwork captures a sound that has continued to evolve in its restless search for new musical directions. Across thirteen tracks we find forward thinking electronic music rubbing elbows with cosmic jazz and deep percussion workouts from Brazil and beyond. There are irresistible calls to the dancefloor: 2000 Black’s UK boogie and the syncopated rhythms of WaH-chU-kU nod to the West London sound, whilst the early rave of Nu Era and Aardvarck’s sub-rattling techno channel the grittier edges of the club experience. We find machine music imbued with humanity in Larry Heard’s deep house classic “Survivor” and in Ron Trent’s WARM project, whose gentle breeze points to a different side of the legendary producer. Patchwork also opens a more immersive listening space in which the radical indie soul of Georgia Anne Muldrow, the ambient spiritual jazz of bandleader Carlos Niño & Friends, and the lament for the Amazon rainforest by Azymuth’s drummer Ivan Conti can channel the overall spirit of group interplay and solidarity. Patchwork also includes Sassy J’s collaboration with veteran producer Alex Attias, marking her own place in a universe that is held together by her singular thread.
