Mapping The Futures Gone By

a propos:
Contact Field Orchestra is produced by Damon Aaron. In 2008 he came across a box of 7" tapes at an estate sale in Altadena that turned out to be field recordings of a turn-of-the century orchestra of ex-miners; recorded almost entirely with hand-made instruments and contact microphones. This became the source material for this collection of releases with HIT+RUN. This EP is the fourth release (including a tape release ) from Contact Field Orchestra with HIT+RUN. CFO has also appeared on Giles Peterson's seminal compilation series "Brownswood Bubblers" (Volume 10), and contributed to Ninja Tune's popular "Solid Steel" mix."Sounds like Tom Waits and Augustus Pablo smoking opium on the bayou." -- Kutmah"Mapping The Futures Gone By" furthers Contact Field Orchestra's exploration of dubby broken percussion and haunting found sounds. Sirens and lasers accent plaintive woodwind arrangements set against mbiras and bluesy guitars. Fitting in a time and place that's uniquely it's own, MTFGB is a travelogue to a lucid dream, a mining expedition or a trip to space--somehow nostalgic and familiar, yet somehow not at all.

Further heat from Gay Marvine, brightening up every floor with powerful uplifting DJ tools, the essence of the heat of the party. This time we have lost disco classic that just gets you burning, the funk of War given the perfect disco treatment, Diana giving it to you like only she could (and later Michael would, his exact staccato style), and luv tempo of factory favorites who later had a member who completed her PhD in the cultural politics of the house music aesthetic in 1995.

Body Rock

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
The second half of previously unreleased Aurra recordings produced by Slave-founding member Steve Washington. The Album was recorded in 1983/84 just after the Salsoul years with his wife Sheila who had just finished writing and touring with The Brides Of Funkenstein. Plans were made for it’s release on Quincy Jones’ newly formed Qwest Records, but legal troubles complicated it’s release. No one was quite sure what happened to the master tapes, not even Steve himself. Body Rock represents the final chapter in the Aurra catalog. This is Electronic Funk and R&B at it’s finest, recorded during a pivotal year in Modern Funk music. Post-Disco, right at the beginning of Hip-Hop’s finest hour when Boogie and Electro music was making the scene in New York. Making this an important milestone in music and documenting the inception of the drum machine. The grooves smoke, as Washington delivers the Dayton Funk style. Mean and lean basslines, irresistible hooks & towering vocal riffs with crisp, tight dance rhythms.- Produced by Steve Washington (Slave, Civil Attack, George Clinton)- Featuring vocals by Sheila Brody (Brides Of Funkenstein, Public Enemy) & Mark Stevens (Taka Boom, Chaka Khan)- Liner notes by Dam-Funk- Full Analog production from the original 2”” tapes recorded in 1984

Love Is A Hurtin' Thing

photo:
a propos:
Finally, Gloria Ann Taylor’s musical output on Selector Sound has been compiled and will be presented in a deluxe triple-gatefold double LP package complete with photos and extensive liner notes. TIP! Soul singer Gloria Ann Taylor has no rags to riches tale to tell. Her story is one of personal sacrifice, failed relationships, and missed opportunity. She was leading a hard knock life before being swept-up by the flash and promise of a marriage and business partnership with a successful record producer. She would be nominated for a Grammy, rub shoulders with James Brown and Bootsy Collins, and turn heads from Motown. But in the end she rejected professional singing, the music business, and the lifestyle that came with it. Thankfully for music lovers, before Gloria closed the doors on her singing career, she left us with some amazing soul songs. Deeply shaded by gospel roots, her haunting sound clearly comes from the gut. Gloria did not fake the funk.Gloria was a partial owner of the Selector Sounds label, along with her husband/producer Walter Whisenhunt (previously a right-hand man to James Brown), and her brother Leonard. They released five Gloria Taylor singles between 1971 and 1977. They also released the three-song Deep Inside You EP, under the name Gloria Ann Taylor and Walter Whisenhunt’s Orchestra. In the studio Whisenhunt would work up a unique musical brew that mixed northern soul with exotic percussion and fuzzy psychedelic guitars. He moved Gloria through a range of tempos and stylings from ballads to disco. Her gritty vocal performance was set to orchestral arrangements creating a juxtaposition of grandeur and solace. The pinnacle of their collaborations has to be the jaw-droppingly epic EP version of “Love Is a Hurting Thing”; a chugging, string-laden disco track, that sounds like proto-Theo Parrish. Bad Neighbor

photo:
a propos:
With 100% beats by Madlib, Bad Neighbor is the brainchild of MED - a cornerstone in Stones Throw's history -- and Blu - the voice behind modern classics like Below the Heavens -- who instantly clicked a decade earlier on tour with Emanon. The album is an exclamation point on the idea that began with The Burgundy EP, expanded to include Dam Funk and Mayer Hawthorne on The Buzz EP, and continued until contributions from Anderson.Paak (Dr. Dre's Compton), Hodgy Beats (Odd Future), and the one-and-only MF DOOM made Bad Neighbor ready to launch. But Bad Neighbor isn't the first time MED and Madlib's orbits have collided. A fellow head from the fertile crescent of Oxnard, CA, MED not only guested on the now-classic Soundpieces by Lootpack in '99, he also dropped into Madvillain's "Raid" (Madvillainy, 2004) and made his mark on Quasimoto's Unseen (2000), not to mention making the sole MC appearance on Madlib's acclaimed Shades of Blue. Madlib, in turn, provided the lion's share of production on MED's Classic and Push Comes to Shove alongside J Dilla and Oh No. Meanwhile Blu, besides earning HipHopDX's "Rookie of the Year" bona fides, put LA back on the map alongside Exile (Below the Heavens, Give Me My Flowers…) and as a self-produced solo artist (Her Favorite Colour, Jesus, York!, Good to Be Home).Bad Neighbor, although hazy, heavy, and blunted under the influence of Madlib's aesthetic backbone, floats effortlessly above the smoke by virtue of MED and Blu's sometimes topical, sometimes acrobatic, and always on-point interplay. The album is undoubtedly an extension of all three artists' signature sounds, but it simultaneously defies all precedents to reaffirm each individual's position at the forefront of LA's legendary hip-hop landscape.

Tap Water

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
"Tap Water" is XL Middleton's first full-length LP in the modern funk mode. As with his previous single releases such as "Keep It Funkin" & "Press Play" (with Zackey Force Funk & Eddy Funkster), Middleton seeks to continue building on the links between 80's boogie funk & 90's g-funk, drawing heavily from both wells to create a fresh new sound that pays homage to its blueprints while continuing to progress and innovate at the same time. For the most part, the songs on "Tap Water" avoid the instrumental-only ethos of much of today's funk, instead opting for more traditional song structures, resulting in music with easily relatable content. Whether it's a love song ("I'm Ready"), a lust song ("Psychic"), speaking out on the disposable, trend-obsessed culture of the modern day ("Do Me Like That"), or simply declaring his funk dominance ("Bumpin'"), "Tap Water" is a well-rounded album designed to appeal to anyone from the most discerning funkologist to the more casual purveyor of all things on the one.All songs written by XL Middleton except for "Do Me Like That" written by XL Middleton & Moniquea. All keys, vocoder and programming by XL Middleton.Guitar on "Bumpin'" & "I'm Ready" by Damon Aaron.Guitar on "Sunshine & Power Lines" & "High On Your Love" by Mike Kobayashi.Guitar & talkbox on "You Know It's True" by Diamond Ortiz.

Rhythm Is All You Can Dance Ep

photo:
a propos:
The heavy, percussion driven analogue sound that is their trademark comes in two tight packages. The title track is all snaky rhythms and squelchy riffing and comes complete with exactly the kind of dense, break heavy remix that we would expect from compatriot, and top buddy of the band, Wolf Muller. Flipside 'Revanche' is a sunnier affair, deft touches on the acoustic guitar and lighter percussion, but no less the party starter because of it.
