Sambaiana the rare 1976 Bossa Nova classic from Candeias finally gets a proper reissue ! LP (180g vinyl + Old School Tip On Gatefold Cover + Download Card + Printed Inner Sleeve) .Curiously enough the story of this record begins with a song, which isn't even featured on it. A song named 'Guayabas'. One of Guillermo Reuter's very first free-spirited compositions is one of his two contributions to the fourth album 'Ese Dia Va A Llegar' by friend and musician Agustin Pereyra Lucena, in 1975. 'Guayabas' was the unintended starting signal for Reuter's career and was coincidentally the initial spark for this reissue that you, dear reader and listener, are holding in your hands right now.But perhaps we'd better take one thing at a time and not jump ahead of ourselves. 'Guayabas' was the Guillermo Reuter song that first caught the attention of the Notes On A Journey founders Jürgen von Knoblauch and Stefan Leisering. It led them to discover his album 'Candeias' shortly thereafter, and a love affair was born. It was a similar story for Jacques Subileau, the producer for the recordings of 'Ese Dia Va A Llegar' (and therefore 'Guayabas'), who was so enamored by this single composition that he proposed Reuter to cut a whole album, made up exclusively of his songs and compositional stylings. The Frenchman with an Argentinian girlfriend, had connections to European record labels like Disco Mediterraneo in Madrid and Disques Espérance in Paris which specialised in World and African music. 'Candeias' would be released on both labels, on the Spanish imprint under the name of 'Sambaiana', in France as the original title 'Candeias', but for inexplicable reasons, with terrible sound quality. For the 24-year-old musician, it came as a total surprise, the once-in-a-lifetime chance to record an entire album of his own works. Raised by parents, both of who were musicians and teachers with their own school (Instituto Reuter in Buenos Aires), Guillermo Reuter was destined to wander down one road for life - to follow in his father's footsteps, professionally and musically. Josef Reuter, born in Germany, balanced his work life where he was a dedicated occupation Headmaster with music, not only was he a passionate organist, he was the maestro of his own choir, the 'Singakademie Buenos Aires' and a well-known director at Buenos Aires’ world famous “Teatro Colón”. Furthermore, he was a strict and conservative father who massively disapproved when his son embraced modern music like Brazilian Bossa Nova, which back then, was just starting to take the world by storm. Despite, or as a direct result of this, 'Samba Da Minha Terra' by João Gilberto was a revelation for the juvenile Guillermo Reuter and shaped his freethinking approach towards music permanently.

Bayanyonyoba

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
South African house and synth-funk from the kwaito era by the legendary Senyaka Kekana. The unexpected deep house jam "Bayanyonyoba (1993)" and the illustrious soul song "Don't Judge Me Bad (1987)" are big RH favorites. Original copies are absolutely impossible to find, now released on 12inch for the first time. Beautiful sleeve by Stenze Quo! Esa Williams - "I had the pleasure of performing alongside Senyaka at the Alexander Theatre, Johannesburg back in 2012 which would have probably been his last most iconic gig before his passing in 2015. These two tracks really showcase the sounds of South Africa around the early to late 80’s, the influences from American synth pop and House that would then lead later into many of these records being played at the wrong speed which ultimately became the original Kwaito sound from South Africa."Kwaito is not just a form of house music, it’s also about the way South Africans dress, talk and dance. The lifestyle took shape in Soweto and gained popularity throughout the cities and townships of South Africa during the nineties. In the backdrop of a transforming South Africa, this slow, loud and striking form of house music emerged just before Nelson Mandela took office as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Kwaai meaning hot, kicking - kwaito is a style in which the sung, rapped and shouted lyrics played a prominent part to mobilise the youth and push for change. The late Senyaka's 1987 album Fuquza (Dance) was years ahead of its time and gave rise to his reputation as a forerunner of the kwaito sound. The album includes "Don't Judge Me Bad" as well as "African Rap" and "Go Away". Later, in 1993, with South Africa on the cusp of democracy and the kwaito movement about to explode into the mainstream, Senyaka cemented his position with the release of his landmark album Ma-Gents, which included the song “Bayanyonyoba”.Regarded as one of the first African rappers, this pioneering artist was best known for his eccentric, controversial lyrics - delivered with a bold and at times funny approach that endeared him to many fans. Outside music, Senyaka also grew in popularity thanks to his roles as an actor, including in the popular homegrown film Moruti wa Tsotsi and the television comedy Ashifa Shabba. The emblematic artist successfully reinvented himself during his career, which led to divergent works. Senyaka’s versatile character shines through in this release as well. “Bayanyonyoba” is a soulful, loud but dreamy South African house gem, whilst “Don’t Judge Me Bad” is a more introverted electronic soul song.

Alec Mansion

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
A sublime slice of boogie-funk, Alec Mansion has steadily gained the status of a "crate-digging classic". Accordingly, it has been near-impossible to unearth a physical copy in good condition for many years. Be With is delighted to present the first ever vinyl reissue, remastered in time to grace the discerning terraces and boat parties of the coming summer months.Originally released in 1983, the LP arrived with impeccable credentials; programming duties were handled by Dan Lacksman (the brains behind Telex, the "Belgian Kraftwerk") whilst production came from Marc Moulin (of jazz-rock fusion heroes Placebo). At the time its merits were mainly praised by radio and studio heads. Today, Mansion's masterpiece is lauded by boogie aficionados from Liege to Los Angeles. It was during a stay in Chicago that the Belgian took inspiration from the communal spirit and sheer power of black American funk. In a recent interview with Vice's Noisey, Mansion cited The Whispers, Prince and Chic as key touchstones in his quest for his desired sound. Upon finessing his idiosyncratic European style of funk for his self-titled sophomore LP, Mansion flirted with perfection.Showcasing a staggering run of instant (non)-hits, this sonically stunning album can be viewed as both of its time and, yet, aeons ahead of it.Amongst the myriad highlights, "Ou Es-Tu" recalls neck-breaking G-Funk roughly a decade before it was ubiquitous. Its swagger conjures the fantasy sound of Dam-Funk producing fellow Francophone masters Phoenix, circa United; all buzzing synths and snapping drums underpinning vocals that ooze European style. The glorious synth-workout "Dans L'eau De Nice" boasts an inordinate amount of instrumental flourishes. Augmented by Mansion's vocal class, it still feels tight and perfectly formed like all timeless pop music, and it has since become infamous as a joyous end-of-night singalong hit for house parties. The startlingly confident "Marche" borders on the arrogant; its sun-drenched cool inviting both awe and irresistible movement. "Quand Je Serai Grand" blasts lazer-guided synth washes over an undeniable groove that would've made Nile Rodgers swoon as he prepped Like A Virgin. The acid squelch that propels the strutting "Laid, Bête, Et Méchant" delivers infectious bounce with enviable abandon whilst the fantastically wonky "Trop Triste" garnered renewed attention after featuring on Zaltan's beloved Quartier Choc mixtape. On the rare occasions it appears on the secondary market, it commands eye-watering figures. A record that has eluded even the most seasoned of vinyl freaks, this officially licensed reissue enables a wider audience to now discover its undoubted genius. Dovetailing neatly with the recent interest in forgotten boogie and obscure Euro-pop, this timely reappearance of a certified lost treasure is sure to be one of the summer's essential releases. As sophisticated and multi-layered as the best of the genre, this is highly recommended if you dig for analogue boogie/synth-funk as well as the more leftfield elements of slick 80s pop. The original artwork of both jacket and sumptuous, full-colour inner sleeve has been faithfully restored; the latter featuring Mansion's memorable lyrics emblazoned across the pleasing jazzy early 80s design. Sonically, Simon Francis' deft mastering adds clarity and muscle throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g.

The Red, White & Blue's

photo:
a propos:
Legendary DJ and collector Sadar Bahar & Dutch synth obsessive Ben Spaander's present their new collaborative EP on BBE!Hugely respected both as a DJ and authority on rare disco, funk and his own brand of ‘Soul In The Hole’, Chicago’s Sadar Bahar joins forces with Dutch synth-obsessive Ben Spaander for a very special 12” release, “The Red, White & Blue’s”. A regular fxture at the world’s most discerning parties including Southport, Soundwave and Helsinki’s Flow Festival, Sadar Bahar frst joined forces with BBE in 2012, releasing acclaimed (and highly sought after) compilation album ‘Soul In The Hole’. Better known as Cosmic Force, electro veteran Ben Spaander has amassed an enviable array of synths in his Utrecht studio, using them to devastating efect in his productions and live shows. Starting out working only with Ben’s synth collection and Sadar’s supreme ear for the groove, the pair soon enlisted help from some talented sax, guitar and keyboard players to give their new project a delightfully organic, live sound. Following hot on the heels of their debut release (‘We Are Righteous People’ on Rush Hour), ‘The Red White & Blue’s’ comprises four heavy grooving dance-foor cuts of varying shades. ‘Electronic Frequencies’ sounds like an early Chicago House track, with a hypnotic synth bassline and insistent kick drum punctuated by sensual spoken word vocals and jazzy guitar licks. ‘Fast Trumpet’ lives up to it’s title with a frenetic disco rhythm and looping brass samples giving way to an ultra-funky wah-wah guitar jam. ‘Binaries In Love’ is a disco/funk workout of epic proportions, the dizzying interplay between live sax and guitar giving a classic feel to the rock-solid groove. Finally ‘East River Throwdown’ gives a nod to b-boys and bgirls across the world, touching on one of the most iconic breaks of all time while adding a earscandalous layer of smooth jazz-funk. An exciting partnership from two artists brought together simply through a love of music, the energetic, joyful nature of these tracks lends them a wide and instant appeal. Coming soon to a dancefoor near you. Expect smiling faces.

Heirloom

auteur:

a propos:
Ill Camille, LA hip hop's female perspective. Ill Camille has been a vital member of the LA music scene for some years. Kendrick Lamar used her vocals prominently for the "good kid, m.A.A.d city" track "Sing about me", she has been working with other TDE artists occasionally and spend a lot of time writing for different projects Terrance Martin was involved with.At the same time Camille was developing her own material with her fellow peers such as MNDSGN, Iman Omari, DJ Battlecat, Like (Pac Div) Georgia Anne Muldrow & SIR who are all featured on her album “Heirloom” just like TDE co-president Punch. “Heirloom” productions range from smooth, g-funk esque west coast beats to live & organic soulful beats, working as the perfect backdrop for Camille's powerful, intelligent and thought thru lyrics. The album is deeply personal revolving around the issues that mater in her life from friends and family, her role as a woman and the heirloom of her and her surrounding: “I feel like everyone are heirlooms of our mothers and fathers. An heirloom is just something that’s passed down through a family. We get heirlooms in the form of game, encouragement or wise words. I know everyone has an aunt or uncle that’s given them some bars about life in general. I have a village around me that have given me heirlooms in the form of conversations”.

It took the former high school mates several years of pursuing their interests in different cities and moving to Berlin to reconnect and decide to collaborate on a record together. The result is quite different to the output both are usually connected with. "Even" is a multi layered cake exploring accidental jams and tape machine workouts. The main focus was spontaneity first and think about the concept later.

Blackwavefunk

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Moniquea established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 MoFunk Records debut album Yes No Maybe. For her followup, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synthpop sounds of the 80’s. Thus, the album title: Blackwavefunk.Listening to Blackwavefunk feels like sweeping across a spectrum of sounds and feels. The lead single, “Checkin’ Out,” channels the ‘street funk’ sound that Moniquea’s native California is known for, while “I Just Don’t Know” slows the pace and mood to offer up one of the few true downtempo love songs of the genre. “When You Are Away,” “Make You Feel My Love” (feat. Brian Ellis) and “Why Can’t You See” offer sleek, sexy modern soul soundscapes while the Turquoise Summers-produced “Knew It” thumps with a menacing g-funk bounce. Finally, the wave in Blackwavefunk reveals itself on the eccentric “Check Your Sources,” an anthem about sordid speculation and grievous gossip, over a musical backdrop that sounds like 1999-era Prince and DPG somehow achieved perfect sonic fusion. The album’s closer, “Famous,” takes it further and gives a glimpse of what it might sound like if Bernie Worrell played synth basslines for OMD or Pet Shop Boys.
