As Time Flows On

photo:
a propos:
World’s Experience Orchestra’s As Time Flows On has not been available as a stand-alone vinyl release since first being issued as a private pressing out of Boston in 1980. And those pressings where in small runs – set in motion by a visionary, bassist/composer/arranger John Jamyll Jones. Jones is a magical type, who communicates with his instrument, his ensembles, and jazz’s ancient lineage in a manner so profound that his late-‘70s album are out of time with jazz’s trajectory, but timeless when presented today.By the late ’90s the music of World’s Experience Orchestra was circulating throughout the collections of esoteric jazz fans, the likes of Gerald “Jazzman” Short and Gilles Peterson, who played WEO for those, the Coltrane-enthralled searching for something new, something different. Something spiritual and honest. As interest in spiritual jazz and WEO grew, Now-Again set about an ambitious plan to reissue Jones’ landmark works. “I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t know when,” says Jones of the road to seeing his music re-issued. “It’s 35 years or more now, and I’ve been waiting for this, and I’m quite sure I’m not the only one.”

Brasileira

auteur:

a propos:
An original copy of the Brasileira LP by Brazilian singer Maria Rita Stumpf has been on top of collectors' and music lovers' wishlist for the past couple of years, since "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" broke out and cast a spell worldwide - from Japan to Brazil, from Norway to South Africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. For the lucky ones that could listen to her whole album – and get to know other gems such as "Lamento Africano/Rictus" and "A Cidade"– it is clear that it is an ouvre that more people should have access to, not only an elite of listeners and connaisseurs. The good news are that the LP will be available again in its entirety in a new, glossy, loud and clear pressing released through Selva Discos, a new label run by Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser (the DJ/production duo known as Selvagem) in partnership with JD Twitch's Optimo Music. It's a legit reissue overviewed by Maria Rita Stumpf herself, the music being remastered from the remaining DAT tape of the original release and artwork faithfully updated by Brazilian design studio Colletivo, featuring liner notes by the singer/songwriter. Here’s an extract from Augusto Olivani’s and Millos Kaiser’s (the duo behind the DJ/production unity Selvagem and also Selva Discos) sleeve notes about the Brasileira LP reissue and the label’s launch“We were aware of the originality and rarity of this album since we put our hands on a copy of the Brasileira LP a few years ago, but it took time to learn that Maria Rita from ‘Kamaiurá’, the track that carried us away as soon as we first heard it, was the same Maria Rita with whom one of us knew since childhood. To reissue ‘Brasileira’ became a life mission. Also, it turned to be the seed that allowed Selva Discos to bloom.”And another extract, taken from Maria Rita’s recollection on the serendipity that triggered the this release -“Many years passed until I got a call from a close friend saying that his son, whom I had known since childhood, was my fan. I found it funny... I was slowly returning to music after years of directing Antares, a company I created and that brought thousands of artists to Brazil. He was a DJ who played my songs at the Selvagem parties and as he said, did not know that I was me, the same Maria Rita who worked with his father. This was a plot twist, a movie thing.”Maria Rita Stumpf is owner of Brazilian production company Antares Produções, responsible for bringing international artists to Brazil for the past 30 years, such as Philip Glass and Mikhail Baryshnikov. After distancing herself from the music business since the Brasileira original release, almost 30 years ago, she’s now back in the game.Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser have been working under the alias Selvagem for the past 5 years, standing by their monthly residencies in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, releasing edits and reworks for labels like Beats in Space, Disco Deviance and Disco Halal. Now they’re also behind the label Selva Discos, whose mission is to unearth and update exquisite, overlooked Brazilian music - not without the aid of JD Twitch from Optimo Music. The follow-up to this first release is a reworks 12" featuring a remake of "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" produced by Selvagem & Carrot Green (based on a new studio session with one of the original session musicians, Paulo Sergio dos Santos from Uakti) backed by a Joakim remix of "Lamento Africano/Rictus", to be released shortly after the Brasileira reissue.

Dreamin'

photo:
a propos:
Notes On A Journey present Dreamin a essential reissue of the private press masterpiece from Chuck Senrick.LP (180g vinyl + Old School Tip On Cover + Download Card + Printed Inner Sleeve)It’s a well-documented fact that a person’s reasons for pursuing a career in music are varied and manifold. For some, it’s the desire for a glamorous and stellar career, the longing for fame and glory. For others, it’s just a job like any other, and for some, it’s a calling, just something you got to do. With this idea in mind, it’s easy to draw a parallel between the modesty and humility in Chuck Senrick's life to that of Sixto “Sugarman” Rodriguez. But while Sugarman recently learnt of him enduring fame on the other side of the globe and the creation of a legend for a whole generation around his craft, Chuck Senrick was never famous, now or at any time or place during his still enduring career. For more than 45 years now he simply plays his Fender Rhodes or piano and entertains any audience which is present, incidentally at the location at which he is performing. In this day and age, an endangered species anywhere but in the US, Chuck Senrick serves as a bar pianist.Raised in Farmington, Minnesota, the young Senrick came at the decision to throw caution to the wind and become a career musician at an early age. At the tender age of 15, he played his first gig in Minnesota, and after the venue's owner pressed his pay into his hand, he quickly came to the conclusion that making a living by performing music was the path he wanted to pursue. From this on it was surprisingly his life of simplicity and restricted circumstances that gave Senrick the liberty to play music whenever and wherever he felt like – be it as an all-round entertainer in bars and restaurants or as a member of several bands (i.e. touring with the Shuffle Brothers across Minnesota between 1976 and 1978 and later accompanying the Claudio Baltierras Ensemble on occasion). By 1982 Senrick was hired by Joe's Steak House in Bloomington, Illinois (a two-hour drive south of Chicago) where he has earned money ever since, either as a solo pianist or as a band leader at his own evening „At Home At The Piano Bar“. This steadfast engagement was only interrupted once, for a six years period when he moved to Anna Maria Island in sunny Florida. During this time he also only played at a single location, the Cafe Crobar. Since this time he spends the remaining parts of his day following his second love after music, building sand castles.Building castles in the air, though, was something Chuck Senrick never did during his career. His first and only record “Dreamin” wasn't meant to signal the start of an illustrious career in the music business. The dozen songs he recorded in friend's living rooms during 1976 were for the by then 21-year old, freshly married Minnesotan, just a plain and simple collection of compositions capturing the world around him and recounting humble tales of his life in it. “Drop A Dime” is a simple account of the flat he shared with three friends, while, as the title suggests, “Wedding Trilogy” is dedicated to his wife and is a living reminder of his marriage which happened around the time of these recordings. It was also his first wife who drew the illustration for the cover of “Dreamin”: A portrait of a young Chuck cross-fading between Minneapolis' bustling city life (sung about in “Downtown”) and the comforting mountain scenery of Montana embedded in familiar unity. The songs, starting with the title track “Dreamin”, invoke the calm, humble life and bond with nature, which is still dear to Chuck Senrick's heart to this very day. The songs also address the conflict between harmony and adventure, a facet of his personality which embodies him all the same. These days, Senrick's personal favourite from the collection is, “Don't Be So Nice”, the best example of this discrepancy. Hard to be topped in its reduced purity, the song is scored in a restrained and jazzy manner, as all tracks of the album, with just a Fender Rhodes accompanied by a simple beat coming from the drum machine, the Donca-Matic by Keio/Korg. This minimalism, paired with a preference for bittersweet melodies and his ingenious vocals, bestow Chuck Senrick's music with a brutal honesty that will never go out of fashion, therefore bearing the imprint of timelessness. The soundtrack to eternity one could say. Just 200 copies of the record were pressed, which Senrick gave away to friends or sells to his audience at his gigs. Only many years later, in 1993 to be exact, during his stay in Florida, does Senrick again record further material. A few of his live gigs are put onto cassette tape and distributed them under the name “Island Live“ and “Cheap Thrills”. Somehow, through a series of unknown events and coincidences, 40-years later those original songs finally meet the catalyst for exposure to a bigger listenership. Not in Minnesota nor in Florida but a Japanese second-hand store of all places, Jazzanova member and NOAJ co-founder Stefan Leisering finds a copy of “Dreamin”. A magic moment for the passionate musician and DJ, one that stands out strong in his decades of record collecting. It's exactly this type of songwriting and these arrangements that hit him emotionally, ticking every box along the way. Back in Berlin, he plays the record to some friends, who are also deeply moved and impressed by Senrick's thoroughly honest music. The author of these liner notes also remembers the first time he heard “Don't Be So Nice” very vividly. It was during a car trip through Berlin with friends and fellow record collectors, Danny McLewin (Psychemagik) and Alex Barck (Jazzanova), when Alex played the track on the stereo of his A-Class, I couldn't believe my ears for a moment. Once in a blue moon do you hear such a perfect pop song, minimalistic yet overflowing with charm owing to its sincerity. Knowing about its extreme scarcity, I didn't even attempt to try to find the record. All the more delighted I was when Notes On A Journey asked me to write the liner notes for this reissue. Finally, I can hold this beautiful record in my hands and I can listen to this ageless, bonafide and touching music again and again and again. I hope you dear reader, gets a kick out of this the same way I did and that I and the whole Notes On A Journey crew still do. Linernotes by Adrian Hoenicke. www.notesonajourney.com

Elle Et Moi

BACK IN STOCKGhent record store Music Mania amazes vinyl lovers with stunning reissue of New Beat Classic "Elle et Moi" by Max Berlin. "Un coin de rue", (French for street corner) are the very first words of the song "Elle et Moi" by Max Berlin, a sexy song that became a New Beat underground classic in the 80s and a much sought-after gem among dj’s all over Belgium. Situated on an obscure street corner in Ghent, legendary vinyl walhalla Music Mania will be releasing a beautiful reissue of the legendary song. The hot and heavy track is filled with French Gainsbourg-style sentences like “aimez-moi” (love me) and “sa voix m’appelle” (her voice calls me) that are whispered in a way that will make every lady urgently get down to business. If you add to that a groovy but very slow disco beat, you can be sure to have a classic on your hands. If the singer then appears to be a cousin of disco legend Cerrone, you know that it’s time to get to the record store and buy yourself a copy. Aimez-moi? We sure do.

Saturday Night Special

photo:
a propos:
In association with DJ Amir’s 180 Proof Records, BBE is honoured to present another gem from the small yet significant Strata catalogue. A precursor to New York’s Strata East, Detroit’s Strata Records was founded in the late 1960s by former Blue Note artist Kenny Cox. Starting life as a music-led community organisation, coffee shop studio and venue, Strata released only a few titles as a record label, gaining the imprint a cult following among record collectors and jazz lovers across the globe. Possibly the best known of Strata’s releases, The Lyman Woodard Organization’s ‘Saturday Night Special’ is rightly heralded as a jazz fusion classic. Recorded in 1975, ‘Saturday Night Special’ features organ, electric piano and Mellotron by bandleader Lyman Woodard alongside guitar and bass by Ron English, with drums and percussion by Leonard King, Bud Spangler & Lorenzo "Mr. Rhythm" Brown respectively. Despite the fairly sparse instrumentation, ‘Saturday Night Special’ lays down an impressive wall of sound, powerfully atmospheric in its almost low-fi aesthetic. Hinting at more traditional jazz, rhythm & blues, afrocuban styles and more, the uniqueness of this album is surely in its feel: summoning up images of a vast industrial landscape, assembly lines and urban decay. In other words, this record sounds like Detroit. No great album artwork is complete without a good story to match, and ‘Saturday Night Special’ does not disappoint. Snapped by photographer and political activist Leni Sinclair (responsible for seminal pictures of Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and John Coltrane and many others), the cover image shows the contents of Lyman Woodard’s pockets placed on the hotel bed after a show: cigarette papers, cash and a pistol. Following Woodard’s death in 2009, this incredible album was reissued in highly limited numbers by Wax Poetics, now just as hard to come by as the original pressings. It’s our pleasure to make this important and influential chapter in the story of contemporary jazz available on vinyl once again.

Soul Of A Woman

photo:
a propos:
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' final studio album, Soul of a Woman is a lush, orchestral masterpiece. A true testament to the life and career of Daptone's fearless leader and one of the world's greatest performers. Though we'll never again see her electric form shimmy across the stage, Sharon Jones continues to give us her soul and her music. She died nearly a year ago, but only now can we hear her final creation. Soul of a Woman captures a singer and a band at the peak of their power. Cutting one last time to eight-track tape at Daptone’s House of Soul studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the band endeavored to create a record that stretches the limits of their soulful sound in all directions, giving us both their rawest and most sophisticated recordings to date. A final statement by one of the most influential rhythm and blues voices of the 21st century.- All new songs recorded in 2015 and 2016.- "Call on God" written and composed by Sharon Jones.- Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were nominated for a Grammy for their previous full length, Give the People What They Want (2014).- The Emmy-nominated documentary Miss Sharon Jones!, directed by Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple, is currently streaming globally on Netflix.- Standard LP is black vinyl w/ download code.

Trying To Hold On

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Cultures of Soul is back! This time it's with a new set of 12"s - the Carib Boogie Synth series. Featuring the iciest synths, the slickest basslines, and other '80s-sounding vibes from the Caribbean islands, all of the tracks are fully licensed. First up in the series is the killer Junior Byron track "Trying To Hold On," written and produced by Wild Fire's Oliver Chapman and originally released on the Wild Fire label back in 1985. The A-side includes the original mix as well as the Version. On the B-side we've got the epic "Megamix." The track was reworked by Gerd Janson, who created the mix old-school style with two copies of the record, a mixer, and an EFX box. Adding the final touches to this track is mixing and mastering engineer LOPAZZ, who mastered many of the best techno tracks in the Get Physical catalog and released the seminal dance-classic "I Need Ya" on Output.

Children Of Nu

photo:
a propos:
Reginald Omas Mamode IV follows last year’s self-titled debut album with "Children Of Nu".The 20 track album draws influence from the world around us, everyday life. As we witness rising poverty, global events, political and ethnic divisions - these factors prompt some of Reginald’s themes and call for humanity to recognise we are all interconnected. “We are all related. We're all brothers and sisters with common ancestry, common history and a common origin regardless of race, geographic location or belief systems. Love and compassion are universal feelings/practices we all should embrace and apply to all aspects of our lives, our interactions and our relationships, regardless of the kinship”.Reginald Omas Mamode IV ‘Children Of Nu’ encompasses Reginald’s musical and sonic influences - Afro Roots music through to jazz and soul. It draws from Africa as much as the west, an attempt to make a record that can exist in many contexts, the present, the future and past. Recorded with freedom - most tracks remain from the first take - the process of creating ‘Children Of Nu’ was an open ended development from a natural, intuitive, starting point. Made with minimal thought of how tracks would end up, the music was led through the creative process. Born of a moment, each track is an attempt to capture that instance, mood, feeling or subject.Last year’s self-titled debut album was warmly received, collecting critical success including Mojo (“A brand-new-retro delight”), Mixmag (“Peckham beat brilliance”), Record Collector (“Equal parts D’Angelo to J Dilla”), The Wire (“Soul music turned all the way inward”) and a Bandcamp Album of the Day (“Breathing lifeforms that are equally steeped in hip-hop, funk, soul and jazz”). It was also nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards 2017. Along with Mo Kolours, Jeen Bassa, Henry Wu, Al Dobson Jr and Tenderlonious, he’s helped forge in the 22a co-operative that The FADER calls “a kaleidoscopic patchwork of hip-hop, house, and groove investigations bound by one thread: a timeless belief in rhythm as a universal language”.

The Invisible Man: An Orchestral Tribute To Dr. Dre

auteur:

a propos:
With "The Invisible Man: An Orchestral Tribute to Dr. Dre" multi-instrumentalist and producer Sly5thAve releases one of his most accomplished works to date. The album comes from a place of collaboration and pioneers an openness to improvisation and experimentation, resulting in a collection of visionary jazz cross-over tributes to Dr. Dre's work. A significant marker of the collaborative process can be heard in the many link-ups and vocal features which hit home throughout the record, from Will “Quantic” Holland (‘The Edge’) and Marc de Clive-Lowe (‘Drelude for Woo’) to Jimetta Rose (‘Let Me Ride’) and Melissa McMillan (‘I’d Rather Be With You’), each significantly contributing to the album’s rhythmic and melodic flair.Honing many of his chops through former projects and on the road as a session musician, Sly5thAve has also worked as a collaborator and session musician with such legendary and established artists such as, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monáe and Quantic.
