Lost Myself

a propos:
Hot Casa Records presents this new project, a collaboration between Soul-Jazz singer Shola Adisa-Farrar and Jazz pianist-keyboardist Florian Pelissier.Raised on opposite sides of the Atlantic, these two artists have combined their talents to compose Lost Myself. This musical voyage blends New-York’s hard-bop aesthetics and reggae-inspired elements, with modern jazz, for a fresh spin on classics and original compositions. Vocalist Shola Adisa-Farrar, a native of Oakland, was born into a family of artists and intellectuals. Shola began singing at the age of eight, influenced by her Jamaican upbringing and the soul and jazz classics that played in her home. At a young age, Shola garnered attention for her distinct raspy voice, which enabled her to perform a variety of musical styles. After living in New-York for 8 years, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music, she is now a true resident in Paris. Shola spends her time travelling to perform and develop her musical style. This album is her explorations into Jazz.Florian Pellissier, Parisian pianist and composer, is known for the authenticity and hard-bop style he brings to his music. A graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Florian has spearheaded his own quintet along with the release of two successful albums: Le diable et son train (2012), and Biches Bleues (2014). Florian has also contributed his musical talent to jazz and funk projects such as Setenta, Camarao Orkestra, Chevere Que Son, Cotonete and GUTS.During Shola’s year-long residence as a performer for Le Reservoir’s Sunday Jazz brunch, Hot Casa Records’ honchos introduced Shola to Florian, sensing they would musically complement each other. In July 2013, their collaboration began, bonding over their love of jazz autobiographies, swapping music, and improvising together. The result is eight spiritually-tinged jazz tracks recorded live on analog equipment to maintain the traditional quality, from sultry introspections to rhythmic compositions, grounded in intense emotion. Included are jazz classics such as “Feeling Good” and “I Have a Dream”, a tribute to the music of Herbie Hancock, who has influenced Florian since his formative years in New York, to which Shola penned lyrics.

Baker's Dozen

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Fat Beats Records is proud to present Baker’s Dozen, an exclusive vinyl series that shines a light on the best minds of instrumental hiphop, ambient, and electronic music. Each installment gives one artist carte blanche to capture their signature sound.Every volume’s 500-unitstrictly limited vinyl pressing features one artist and twelve tracks, but only 250 units will contain the thirteenth track -- the eponymous “baker’s dozen bonus” -- on a flexi disc. The LPs also come equipped with a 5x7” postcard insert that features a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used in their music-making process. Visually cohesive and packaged with the utmost attention to detail, Baker’s Dozen is a series that speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous, whose instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.Volume One highlights Los Angeles born / Sacramento based beat maker Dibiase, whose style is best described in his own words: “It’s crazy to think that my equipment collection and beat making process started back in high school with just an 8 second Gemini sampler and a Sony Walkman. It was a super basic set up. Back then I used whatever I could get my hands on. Finding different samples, looping them up, running the layers back through the Walkman. Adding more layers and repeating that process until I had a beat. It worked. My process is a lot different now but in some ways it’s the same. I still do a lot of layering. I use a combination of hardware and software. Sometimes I start with a sample. Sometime I start with drums. It depends on my mood and the genre. Sometime I use a kit. Other times I will sample and layer drums, run them through another piece of equipment like the SP-12 or 404 to dirty them up, then dump them back into Ableton.I really don’t have a set way of doing things musically. I like to experiment with different technics and styles. I like my music to have a certain sound. Most of the time I let the process happen naturally.”

a propos:
Continuing the BBE 20th anniversary celebrations, one of their most sought-after back-catalogue gems gets a long awaited repress. Even in this digital age, the beating heart of modern R&B and hip-hop is still vintage soul, funk and jazz. Modern producers, searching for music of integrity, continue to scour dusty racks of records for inspiration. What Kon and Amir have done is make their lives easier. The first collection in the five part “Off Track” series, contains 28 superb songs that you’ve probably never heard of. From a disco tribute to Muhammad Ali to a slice of soulful South African jazz, this is music for the connoisseur.Musical treasure-hunters by trade, Kon and Amir have spent the past twenty-five years excavating record bins finding gems to pierce ears with. Fortunately, everyone gets to share in the riches of their labor with the reissue of their first offering from the popular The “Off Track” Series. The Off Track series built on the successes of their highly respected “On Track” series. Unlike the “On track” series, which featured short snippets of samples and breaks, the Off Track double series features full versions of some the best and rarest audible gems in their entirety.

Take Me I'm Yours

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
While being a rare Patrick Adams and Billy Nichols production, Mary Clark’s “Take me I’m Yours” has in recent years become one of the most celebrated Disco tracks by contemporary Deejays. This borderline Gospel-Disco Gem has all the elements of a timeless Disco Cut, a driving bass line, powefully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by Mary Clark. Like many of Peter Brown’s “affliate” labels, little is known about them or the artists recorded. Originaly released in 1980 on ‘La Shawn’, it is rumored to have been no more than 200 records originally pressed, making this one of the most sought 12 inches among collectors. However Leave it to someone like Dimitri from Paris who edited and included “Take me i’m yours” on his “The Kings Of Disco” compilation from 2004 to give this virtualy unknown song a new life and a whole new audience. Even as recently as last year, Mary Clark’s song of “devotion” made it’s way into a BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix, courtesy of Floating Points, and frankly, there’s probably not a bigger audience than that.

Gotta Get Your Love

photo:
a propos:
Back in the day a very young Clyde Alexander went into the studio with Gary Davis and Sanction at the behest of Mr. Peter Brown. The cut they laid down that day has been sought after and filling dance floors ever since. Gary Davis and his neighbor Truck constructed what many believe to be the ultimate hook in "Gotta Get Your Love". Gary's lavish yet simple arrangement and Trucks lyrics are backed with one of the most solid bass lines you'll ever hear over a beat so steady it's like bedrock. This record is so tight it's hard to believe every player at this session was in their teens when this was laid down on tape. That is with the exception of Gary Davis who was the elder statesman of this outing at the advanced age of 24. Give this one a spin and you'll understand how Gary and his crew from Camden made history that afternoon in '79.

Feel The Spirit

photo:
a propos:
Another extremely rare underground record coming out of the P&P camp. This highly sought after 12” originally released on Lonnie Records is an absolute gem combining Jazz, Funk and Disco. Although there is little to nothing known about the Foster Jackson Group, Feel The Spirit was Mixed by Tim Benedict, who was a recording engineer at Sound Palace Studios in NYC where he assisted greats like Patrick Adams (on a variety of projects), and Jazz-Funk legend Bob James. With that in mind, it’s no wander this track is one that appeals to both the Jazz Funk/rare groove fans and Disco heads alike. An Incredible uptempo mover loaded with a jazzy organ, horns, congas, and funky breakdowns Feel the Spirit goes far beyond the body, it’s all about the soul!

Soul Sok Sega

photo:
a propos:
Following successful excursions into rare tropical and island sounds with the ‘Sofrito’ series, ‘Haiti Direct’ and ‘Calypsoul 70’ albums, Strut Records turns its focus to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius for a new compilation, ‘Soul Sok Séga’. Séga first developed as an insular music and dance form after slaves arrived on Mauritius (then île de France) from East Africa and Madagascar during the 17th to 19th centuries, using Créole language and rhythms played on the large ravanne circular drum, the triangle and the maravanne, a box filled with dried seeds. Séga was essentially frowned upon and marginalised by the Mauritian bourgeois until the 1950s when singer Ti Frère began to play a more Westernised fusion of séga. Through Ti Frère and his contemporaries like Serge Lebrasse, the music began to be popularised during the ‘60s and became fully accepted after the ‘Night Of The Morne’ event in 1964 as the Créole community asserted ist cultural identity. ‘Soul Sok Séga’ documents the heyday of séga in Mauritius during the 1970s as a new generation of contemporary artists broke through. Jazz, soul, funk and rock elements all began to be effortlessly infused into traditional séga folk roots to create some inspired fusions. A talented new wave of artists including Jean- Claude, Claudio, Marie Josée and Roger Clency became domestic stars and began to take the music to international stages for the first time. Meanwhile, cult artists like the James Brown-influenced Ti L’Afrique, Coulouce and Christophe all enjoyed a more brief but important moment in the spotlight. Since this era, séga has now been adopted as the national music of Mauritius and the original ‘70s music is a revelation for any fans of tropical music and world sounds. Strut’s album features extensive sleeve notes from long time Mauritian cultural champion, Percy Yip Tong, including new artist interviews, photos and original vinyl artwork. The compilation is by DJ duo La Basse Tropicale (Natty Hô and Konsöle), based in the neighbouring island of La Reunion. All formats (1CD / 2LP / digital) are unmixed, with all tracks never reissued internationally since they were originally available. An accompanying European tour featuring Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio with an all-star band of original musicians is planned for Summer 2016.KEY POINTS- first official international compilation documenting séga music from Mauritius- key artists involved in album and promotion including Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio- features exclusive artwork by Lewis Heriz and sleeve notes by respected Mauritian cultural journalist and promoter, Percy Yip Tong- strong addition to Strut’s tropical reissue range following the Sofrito series, Haiti Direct and Calypsoul 70- supported by DJ dates by album compilers La Basse Tropicale with plans for séga legends live tour during 2017
