Animals Have Feelings

It all started at a Detroit strip club, with a platter of deep-fried beef taquitos and a dancer whose face looked a bit like Burt Reynolds. It was here that Sam Baker first met a self-described fan of his, who told him to take his music work more seriously. Sam had long since graduated from tapping on piano to working on the MPC and 404 under the name Samiyam, circulating beat tapes among local crew in Michigan. He was among a network of post- Donuts hip-hop producers focusing on instrumentals as the work. Flying Lotus met Sam and picked him for the debut release on his Brainfeeder label, 2008’s Rap Beats Vol. 1. Sam Baker’s Album followed in 2011. His Wish You Were Here showed up on Leaving Records in 2013, along with production work for Earl Sweatshirt, Captain Murphy and Pharoahe Monch along the way. Samiyam, extended Stones Throw family for a while now, debuts with Animals Have Feelings, an album which he considers the creative sequel to Rap Beats Vol. 1. “Animals has roots in beats made around the time of Vol. 1, and the new stuff on the record has some of the same sound.” The record is classic instrumental hip-hop, mixed with a handful of rap tracks he did with the few MC collaborators he chooses to work with: Earl (Mirror), Action Bronson (Mr.Wonderful), Jeremiah Jae and Oliver the 2nd (Lord of the Rings).

Disco Halal Brazil

photo:
a propos:
Lime Marbled Vinyl 12" This offering by Berlin-based, world-influenced label Disco Halal presents three tracks that result from the collaboration between the Brazilian DJs and producers Selvagem and Carrot Green (who combine releases on BIS Inc, Universal Cave, Hello Sailor, Barefoot Beats, Brazilian Shakedown and Magic Movement).Exploring local melodies from the 60's and 70's, they built tracks that turn those sounds into some sort of exotic Techno beasts, only with that tropical flavour. The A-side brings Vandre, a throbbing 126bpm track carried by a lovely guitar and singalong vocals by one of Brazil's most iconic protest singers. The package is complete with the remix by the ever growing Italian duo Marvin & Guy, who kept the hypnotic aura with their lush minimal sounds. This black magic blessed EP continues on the flip with Dengo, a slow burner based on a candomble chant that, along with the flute, cowbell, and clapping, puts the audience into a spell. Finally Ossain's killer strings, psyched-out vocals and percussive breakdowns wrap up this South American addition to the Disco Halal familyOne limited vinyl press only!

Where Do We Go From Here? (remixes)

photo:
a propos:
(180gr) FOMDO12 is the latest in this series, with fresh interpretations from Dego, Andres and Ben Hauke of the as yet unreleased 'Where Do We Go From Here? The Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra is Far Out's in-house, Brazilian disco super group. It features the arrangements of Azymuth's late Maestro José Roberto Bertrami and the legendary Arthur Verocai amongst a host of other Brazilian musical icons. With a consistent stream of original modern disco sounds, the project has also played host to a series of remixes from some of dance music's greatest pioneers. FOMDO12 is the latest in this series, with fresh interpretations from Dego, Andres and Ben Hauke of the as yet unreleased 'Where Do We Go From Here?'Like 'Step Into My Life', which came out last year via two John Morales remixes, 'Where Do We Go From Here' is taken from the forthcoming second instalment of the Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra project. Check the first here: A1 is Dego's 2000 Black remix. The broken beat innovator streamlines his sometimes more rugged sound, with the funk as priority. It's a sophisticated and irresistibly slick disco-house roller, reminiscent of his recent single for Neroli, 'Don't Stop (Let It Go)': with the same cross-genre appeal, a deep and deeply inviting groove, with Dego's signature swing.A2 is a study in contrasts, Ben Hauke's take looks inward to find its feet, an intriguing riposte to Dego's open-arms welcome to the dancers. Organic rhythmic elements pile on top of each other, so loose and precariously balanced they seem to be perpetually on the verge of collapse. It's to Ben's credit that he pulls it off while showcasing a gifted ear for minor-key melody, with warm synths and piano notes taking his mix to another level. An essential slice of soulful, broken house, it effortlessly builds upon the tracks foundations, adding deeper, darker dimensions to the original's classy disco sound.B1 is Andres' mix. It's got the touch of smooth Detroit class that we have come from to expect from him. Woozily silken keyboard chords work their way around an insistent bassline, the jazzy interplay perfectly offsetting the locked groove. The latter is a head-nodding house beat with a touch of boom-bap that belies Andres years of experience in the hip-hop world, most notably as Slum Village's resident DJ. Vibe-wise, it sits comfortably between Dego's sophisticated uptempo soul and Ben Hauke's downbeat late night groove. All three make for a stellar addition to The Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra remix roster, showcasing the many dimensions of their pioneering modern disco sound.

Go Go Go/We Go Gome

photo:
a propos:
It's a great pleasure to welcome back Waze & Odyssey to the label, since their first "Please don't Dance" EP on Dirt Crew wich was released in early 2013 and that featured an excellent "Detroit Swindle" remix botht duo's have had a massive rise and impact on the underground House scene worldwide. Waze & Odyssey have also had killer releases on their own imprint "W&O Street tracks" and with their latest "On the Downlow" single they stormed the dancefloors and major radio playlists. Waze & Odyssey is best know for their straight up bangin' House cutz and with these two tracks you get exactly that! "Go Go Go" is a filterred House banger that takes us back to the early Chicago and French House productions from the mid 90's. On the other side of this fine 10" the deeper and more electrofied "We Go Home" delivers some nasty breakdowns and with it's manic pitched and ascending lead sound it should shake and stir your brain to get your feet moving for sure. Pure dance floor action with these two new Waze & Odyssey tracks!

Tijan Pou Velo

photo:
a propos:
n some quarters, Tijan Pou Velo is considered something of an unheralded jazz-fusion classic. Here issued on CD for the first time by Heavenly Sweetness, the 1988 album saw trumpeter Edmondy Krater join forces with occasional backing band Zepiss to deliver unique blends of modern Gwo Ka (a style born and popularized in Guadeloupe) with American jazz-funk and electric jazz influences. The resultant music is a humid, highly attractive hotchpotch of Guadeloupe's traditional African and South American influences, and distinctive nods to (then) contemporary European and North American sounds. In other words, it's a tropical fusion masterpiece.

Tin Top (Kon Edit) RSD Special

photo:
a propos:
Kenny Mann Jr. & Liquid Pleasure Band - Tin Top (Pt. 1 & 2 and Kon Edit)Taken from 'Off Track Vol. 3', 'Tin Top' provides yet another reminder of why Kon is revered almost as much for his music knowledge and record collection as he is for his production skills. A party disco belter, Kon's subtle edit of 'Tin Top' simply can't miss on the dance-floor thanks its infectious groove and fun lyrics. In Pt.2, the story takes a darker turn, while the track just keeps on grooving.12” vinyl for the first time, exclusively for RSD 2016, strictly very limited!
