Drugstore

Having busted out a staggering amount of edits for Disco Fruit over the past few years, Loshmi makes his vinyl debut for the label with the Drugstore EP, and he's packing even more of that feel-good funk in the process. The title track is a heavy, sample-a-delic jam with a deadly flute lead and heated organs, while "Wsoop Wsoop" opts for an outright boogie freakout of the highest calibre. "Sweet And Nasty" heads in the direction of Salsoul Records to inject some Philly heat into the house beats on offer, and then "Still Loving You" rides the EP out on a sweet, soulful tip.

Flying/Where Do I Begin?

photo:
a propos:
As Emotional Rescue continues to deliver the goods for those who love discofied rarities from the 70s and 80s, here comes this EP from Kevin Harrison, originally released in 1982 and worth a pretty penny second hand. It's a wistful, proggy kind of groove that finds Harrison's voice lost in an alien phaser while the live band feel gels with synthesiser parts for a fluid kind of cosmic goodness. There's simply no arguing with the plush melodic wonderment of "Views Of The Rhine", while "Fly" is the jam the party DJs will reach for, not least for its slinky bassline. Amazing.

Going Crazy

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Best Italy continues to do a wonderful job of unearthing much-sought after gems and giving them the re-press they deserve. Lily Ann was a quintessential one hit wonder of Italo disco perfection that surfaced in 1984, and "Going Crazy" captures the mood of early 80s dance music perfectly. Adding value to the release beyond the fresh mastering job and high-end modern pressing, as well as the previously released vocal and instrumental we also get treated to a dub mix of "Going Crazy" to give you even more options for dropping this impeccable slice of Italian dance music history.

Rare Essence

photo:
a propos:
Indonesian concern Midnight Runners know a thing about quirky, utterly funky boogie and disco variations played out with real world heart and soul. This third album Rare Essence is the most complete look into the world of bandleader Munir Septiandry to date, not least when reveling in the heavyweight groove of "Pyramids Of The Moon". There's a lighter disco touch to "Paraswara Harmoni", but equally a cosmic force guides the track skywards in a manner that calls to mind the sweetest 70s library music. "Cyber Crimes" is a sassier affair that makes its club intentions clearer, but at every turn Midnight Runners display a keen proficiency for party music that you can equally chill to.

To Africa/Soul Makossa

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
The latest dig from Best Record Italy's eternal mission to release the finest Roman musical manna features noted jazz man Pino Presti taking on Manu Dibango's eternal party jam "Soul Makossa". Presti's interpretation uses oodles of gleaming 80s synths in place of the original traditional instrumentation, but fear not as the iconic brass section remains a real-world force, and sounds mighty fresh with it. Following up that cover is a sumptuous version of "Ain't No Sunshine" which is aimed square at the heartstrings of the most Balearic cruisers. "I Call Your Name / Come Back To Me" gets even smoother, the vocals capturing Mediterranean getaway romance to perfection.

The Conversation

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
With just one 7" release to their name in the form of the 1981 release, Jive Baby On A Saturday Night, the cult of The Jellies was possibly accidentally assured with the long lost song being rediscovered by collectors and championed by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore no less. Picked up and reissued by the stellar Trunk Records in 2010, the B-side cut, however, was sadly overlooked. Now Emotional Rescue are proud to license The Conversation and remaster it especially for this rerelease. Based around a simple drum and bass rhythm, interspersed with crowd noise, playful female vocal yelps and sprinkled with dub effects thrown in to the mix and you wouldn't probably think too much would be going for a track that the band put together in the last two hours of their studio time after Jive Baby had been completed. However, what you get is a killer gem of pop-punk-dub oddness that gets your head nodding to its infectious, repetitive rhythm laden with effects. With just this one (perfect) track available for license it seemed only right to hand it over to the in-house production team, Apophenia, to do their increasingly trademark dubbed out reworking, this time in the form of a true, but respectful "Version" for the flip. With both members of The Jellies sadly now living overseas this piece of early '80s British dub as it were, can now be fully treasured for posterity while also, proving a nice little smokers delight.

City

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Most Excellent Unlimited's Danny Krivit re-edit series continues with more, erm, "most excellent" material. He begins with the heavy drum breaks, guttural funk guitars, bombastic bass and winding saxophones of "City", smartly emphasizing the densely layered percussion and the original track's various instrumental solos. On the flip you'll find the equally intoxicating and mind-altering "Sun, Sun, Sun", where chanted vocals - in tribute to that big orange ball in the sky - rise over a metronomic synth bassline and an African-influenced rhythm track. It's a chunk of genuine dancefloor voodoo just crying out to be played at sunset and sunrise.

Take Time

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Vol. 5

photo:
a propos:
As something of a protege of Ron Trent, Trinidadian Deep has constantly excelled in infusing a traditional deep house sound with a broader palette that draws on African and Latin rhythms while ever focused on a warm, soulful end result. He's the latest artist to sign up to Hands Off, coming on direct and unfussy with this soothing balm of a two tracker. "Want You" is classic Trini, stirring up hazy lead lines over tumbling percussion for an endlessly flowing masterclass in deep house. "Father" meanwhile takes a brighter approach with its playful piano out front and sharper drum palette.

Wheeels EP

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Montreal's KenLo Craqnuques has been bubbling away in the underground for some time, but lucky for us Hot Shot Sounds took notice and now present his first outing on vinyl with the Wheeels EP. There is an irresistible funk to the sounds that Craqnuques conjures up, pushing fat, Moog-esque basslines and low slung machine beats rolling at an easy tempo that hark back to the golden days of boogie and electro funk. "Mollusque" indicates how his is far from a throwback sound though - this is up to the minute instrumental RnB that recognises the true roots of the genre while looking to the future, and it sounds utterly fresh.
