More... I Like It/Twenty Seven

Best Record Italy take the time machine all the way back to 1979 to revisit the wonderful Italo-Disco delights of Adolf Stern, whose "More... I Like It" represents the strangest end of the genre as it was taking shape. With heavily processed vocals injecting some serious strangeness into the chirpy disco backdrop, it's the kind of track to turn heads without a doubt. "Twenty Seven" on the B-side is equally magical in its capturing of the era, with the more obvious surface elements underpinned by a truly intoxicating line in synth arpeggios. Once again Best comes up trumps refreshing the history of Italian music of all shapes and sizes.

Albuquerque's Plastik People continues to be the leading bastion for hard swinging garage house in the Deep South. This time label boss Marc Cotterell has linked up with Dominic Balchin as Tuff Vibes to bring the classically informed heat to the people who just can't get enough of that warm, soulful sound. "Leave Me Cold" does the absolute opposite of its title thanks to the oodles of piano, organ and more melodic flexing besides. "Jazzy '99" is a more accurate guide with its sassy sax licks and vibing chords, and then "Rhythm Of The Vibe" pushes the tempo up for a purely dancefloor minded workout.

Arian

a propos:
Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official reissue of ARIAN: A rare and underrated Disco album originally released in 1981 by PGP RTB label and fully recorded in New-York.Arian Kerliu was born in the small town of Macedonia, Dibra or Debar. Arian’s first recordings for a local radio stations were at the age of 14, appearing in almost every music festival in Ex-Yugoslavia. When he was 19, Arian came to New York City, working different jobs and studying music. His first music engagements were in various clubs throughout the city, playing guitar and singing. He then met with James Benjamin-Fish, well known bass-guitar player, with whom he formed the band ARIAN & FUNKY FAMILY, mainly performing in the best clubs of NYC at that time.Together, they came to an idea to record an album of their own. After travelling throughout the US, they got to know each other very well, and had connected with probably some of the best musicians you could find at that time. Thus they had Sinclair Acey arranging three songs and Hubert Eaves, as a writer of "Still Together", a beautiful ballad written in honor of his wife. By that time Hubert had gained two Grammy awards for Stephanie Mills’ albums. Kornelius Cambell also wrote and composed two songs of the album, which Sinclair Acey arranged. The album also contains a great cover of “Can’t Say Goodbye” by Bobby Caldwell, a song that Arian and James had interpreted almost every night when touring. And all of this completed with the background vocals of Tawatha Agee (Mtume), Shevill Alexander and Sybil Thomas (Raw Silk).Arian & Funky Family band was then invited in Yugoslavia for a European tour, including James, Kornelius and Stacey, but also others great musicians such as William "Spaceman" Patterson, Zane Mark, Steve Kroon, Trevor Gale, Alex Foster, or Reggie Marks, not forgetting Flame Braithwaite and Meli'sa Morgan on background vocals. Having the material of the 4 songs ready and finalized, the PGP RTB label from Belgrade offered them to release an album, with the idea to also adapt the songs with lyrics from the famous Croatian musician and writer Mario Mihaljevic.Today, Favorite Recordings is deeply honored to bring this brilliant LP back to life. In order to insure the best sound quality, the original tracklist has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all DJs and music collectors.

a propos:
Here comes the first vinyl release by French collective Parisian Soul, released on Denote Records.Denote Records is a label founded in 2001 by David Hachour and Florent Sabaton, following the success of their Disco/House band Oscar. From 1998 to 2005, their productions filled many international dancefloors and David H travelled all over the world to play alongside famous DJs such as Rainer Truby, Paul Johnson, Little Louie Vega, Shazz, Eva Gardner, Dj Cam, Carl Craig, Arnaud Rebotini (Blackstrobe), or Grand Master Flash to name just a few…Since 2005, David focused on his work as sound engineer and started working at the famous “Topmaster” recording studio. And in 2008 he launched the “ColorSOundStudio” with Florent. But after a few years, the duo decided to reactivate the Denote imprint in 2012, with various projects including artists such as Villanova, Andre Salmon, Chez Carmen, or Sleaz. In 2016, David formed Parisian Soul alongside Jérôme Lecailletel and Laurent Cohen, all connected by their love for Disco and Funk productions. Jerôme, who’s also part of the Oscar adventure, is a multi-instrumentist and composer, who have a long career as a studio musicians for many majors’ acts. As Laurent Cohen has been deejaying since 1985 for various radio and clubs, also working for famous Parisian records shop, Sound Records and Urban Music. On this first vinyl only release, the trio also combined the curiosity of digging, with the organic groove of live music and the requirements of high level mastering. Finely produced at the ColorSOund mastering studio, their 2 first reworks is a brilliant mix of their Funk, Disco and House influences, perfectly fit for killing the dancefloors.

Synergy EP

photo:
a propos:
For their 12th release, Fasaan Recordings has dug deep into the techno underground of Malmo and found the drum machine anthems of Frankie Twilight. Not your usual techno producer, the woman behind this Alan Vega-esque alias does not subscribe to any genre definitions. Having played in a Berlin-based punk band as well as acting as resident DJ at a members only 78 rpm jazz club, to say her tastes are diverse is quite an understatement. The DIY spirit is however a red thread throughout the 4 tracks of her Synergy EP for Fasaan. As her technical set-up is plain to see on the sleeve itself, the feverish live jams that form the base of these tracks comes off as raw and undiluted. Sometimes they are weighted down with the moody blues of numbing synth chords, like on "My Opal Gems" and "Coral Desires". Sometimes they're frying in the squelch of a classic acid bath, like on "Dizzmol".All the while, the deranged funk of her playful rhythm patterns will surely see you crawling towards a concrete basement after sunset, contorting your body to fit your limbs into the grooves or sulking in a corner breathing in all of its gothic glory.

Ken Gill EP

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Alleviated Records is proud to present the Ken Gill EP. Ken was on the scene while Bernard (Badie) and Larry (Heard) worked on music ideas between 1993 and 1997 and they both help out on "Love Moon", our first selection. Larry's "psychedelic" interpretation constructed around Bernard's bassline idea and Ken's original elements. "Just A Test" is up next with its' "tracky" feel that dj's, dancers and all who like to keep it "no-frills" should enjoy (we hope!). "Idol Mind" has an interesting combination of "moody", "upbeat" and "whimsical" that draws you in as you listen. "Jack Wit Honey" is another that draws you in as you listen but this time with a "melancholy" overtone combined with a fun "bounce". Ken has only been making trax for a short time but we were all pleasantly surprised to hear his ideas right from start when he decided to try his hand at it. We're happy to present his first release and hope you enjoy it too! Musically Yours...

Man Biye?/A Happy Disco Song

photo:
a propos:
Totally unique and basically undiscovered Ethophian synth groove single by blind keyboardist Haile Mariam G. Ghiorgis. 500 copy press - fully licenced release which comes with a thick high quality picture sleeve. As a first release on this newly founded label, here's two totally unique and undiscovered Ethophian synth groove recordings by blind keyboardist Haile Mariam G. Ghiorgis. Both tracks are taken from the highly collectable and extremely rare debut solo album 'Tigill Lemenor (Survival)'. An album that Ghiorgis released privately in 1985 on his own Pentaton label.Born in Ethiopia in 1952, Haile M. Ghiorgis originally worked as a music instructor after school and played music together with several prominent groups of his countrymen, he was the keyboardist of Mahmoud Ahmed & Ibex Band and played for national stars like Tilahun Gessesse, among others. Due to the communist revolution in Ethiopia in 1974, Haile decided to leave his motherland and he was allowed to leave the country due to his blindness in 1977. Finding a new home in Hamburg, he performed together with various bands, including the afro pop group Soulful Dynamics and Jah Love (an early band of funk drummer and reggae artists Curvin Merchant aka Jamaica Papa Curvin). When those groups disbanded, Ghiorgis was retrained as a piano-tuner but also focussed on his own music.Haile M. Ghiorgis was particularly fascinated by the digital-controlled synthesizer and rhythm-machines, whose operation he mastered without any difficulties in spite of his blindness. The drums came from a Yamaha drum computer and were recorded first. On top of that, bass and the melodies were added. Haile was using a Yamaha DX-7 keyboard, an old small Roland synth as well as an organ by Solton. On the album, which was recorded in his small home studio in Hamburg on a TEAC 8-track tape machine, Haile M. Ghiorgis harmoniously blends western pop and jazz music with his native country's folklore. On the A side, 'Man biye?' is a sort of melancholic love song, it means 'What shall I call you?'. A man searches for something though in vain to compare with the beauty of his beloved. The atmospheric instrumental features brilliant synth solos over deep downtempo beats, sort of like jazzy ethno synth funk in slow motion.Side B of the single is the uplifting disco track 'A Happy Disco Song'. As it says in the liner notes of the LP, the song esteems Ethiopian hospitality and relates how welcome every stranger is and how even the poorest is ready to share with him. The track got a charming 'private' vibe and surely should appeal to DJs and disco/boogie aficiandos. The original LP 'Survival' was primarily sold on live shows when he was on tour in the late 1980s throughout Europe, accompaning fellow Ethopian musicians including jazz legend Mulatu Astatke, among others, and almost never pops up.

Awesome Tapes From Africa continues to unearth must-hear gems for a wider audience with its reissue of South African bubblegum music stars Umoja's 1988 EP 707.Bubblegum music was defined by its call-and-response vocals and catchy synthesizer-led melodies. Helmed by 'Om' Alec Khaoli, who turned to the pure pop form as an escape from apartheid in the mid-80s, Umoja's EP 707 was a chart-topping, radio-friendly hit for the genre in 1988 that achieved double-platinum status.Umoja translates as 'oneness' or 'unity' in Swahili. 'Bubblegum music was about escape', explains Khaoli in the press release. 'If you had grown up in South Africa at the time, there was nothing more in your life than oppression. It was even in your dreams. Anything that was a way out was welcome 'When this music was playing everyone just wanted to dance, just have a good time.'
