Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart is one of the top producers of today’s groove music scene. After playing as a bassist and guitarist for various bands, he started producing in the mid-nineties and has kept on mixing today’s technologies with the raw spirits of House, Electronic, Disco, Funk, Soul, Reggae & Jazz music’s golden years since then.Following the trail of success left by his various projects as Patchworks, and under many aliases, he’s proved his musical ubiquity and unexpectedly stroke in various genres. Today, he’s back under the EDR Records’ umbrella, following up to his various EP for the label, and meanwhile pursuing a comeback to his early love for House music. Many House music diggers would indeed remember that before Favorite Recordings was launched in 2006, Patchworks and Pascal Rioux produced many deep-house tracks on the Rotax Disques imprint. Besides since the late 90s, Patchworks has also collaborated with labels such as Q-Tape, or Still Music, delivering many clubbing hits such as “Million Toes”, “Sugar”, or “Minautor”.On this 5 tracks EP, he delivers 4 killer tunes again, inspired by the Michael Jackson’s classic hit, “Rock With You”.

BBE present DISCOvery the first international release from Japanese collective A Hundred Birds. The brainchild of respected Japanese DJ Yoku, A Hundred Birds is an ambitious live collective, performing across Japan since 1996. Already a popular festival orchestra, the group got a taste of international success in the year 2000 when overseas debut "Batonga" was released on Francois Kevorkian's Wave Music. Fronted by Yoku, who acts as conductor at live shows and keeps the set running continuously like a DJ mix, the band perform an engaging mixture of covers and original material.DISCOvery is a joyful collection of extended cover versions based on the definitive club mixes of the 70's and 80's, characterized by sublime horn and string arrangements, virtuoso musicianship and a tangible sense of fun. Best described as a devoted tribute to the golden age of disco music, DISCOvery sees A Hundred Birds talented players and singers effortlessly tackling a selection of truly iconic records. It's time to party: Japanese style.

No fancy business class air lounge mumbo jumbo this time, no.8 just got clearance for take off and this one is first and foremost for the pilots. The A side hits you loud and direct like a Cessna Centurion engine, accessible, reliable and just damn good in the air.Now if B1 is some kind of an adventurous but gentle Doppel-decker, manoeuvrable small craft, then low altitude B2 breaks the cloud cover to take you on that magic night-flight you might later be uncertain if it ever really happened.LIMITED EDITION - VINYL ONLY!

Following on from their hard hitting previous release 'Quarantine', East London's Phil Passera & Chieka Ononye deliver their 4th release as PAYFONE on New York's Golf Channel Recordings.A side Catholic Central emerges from a dark street corner to bloom into a moody synth and bass heavy rhythm, before colliding with a disco riff that could have easily been borrowed from the master tapes of late 1970's Atlanta outfit Brick.Featuring the vocal style of Argentinian Pia Gonzalez Antar, who in confession recalls the dark dynamic of a relationship with a previous lover many years her senior. The room shaking B side comes courtesy of d'Marc Cantu's 'HAZE MIX' that delivers a pounding late night electronic soul voyage. Cantu has been releasing genre defying records since the late 2000's, and performs as one third of JaKbeat super group X2 alongside Traxx & JTC. Golf Channel every time!

The Reflex Revisions

photo:
a propos:
Three incredible re-works from French disco don The Reflex, for our very own legendary Canadian/Haitian keyboard wiz Henri-Pierre Noel. Funky Spider Dance is a percussion heavy bomb filled to the brim with Henri's soaring piano licks and infectious female vocal hooks. The Reflex has taken what was already a sure-fire club favourite, and created something of a dance floor destroyer. His rework of A Fifth of Beethoven takes its time to build into another heavy hitter. As the beats make way for Henri's deft keyboard flourishes, the recognition of this cover of the Walter Murphy classic (taken from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack) begins to dawn - and as it does, it's clear that once again the dream team of HPN and The Reflex have worked their magic!Last, but certainly not least, The Reflex's Revision of Back Home..., Sweet Home is a modern Island Funk masterpiece with organ and tropical guitar riffs making way for sunny brass stabs all underpinned by foot friendly beats. The original versions of Funky Spider Dance and Back Home..., Sweet Home can be found on Henri's One More Step LP, and his take of A Fifth of Beethoven was recently available on 7-inches of wax - all on Wah Wah 45s of course. The Reflex Revisions all appear here together on vinyl, in fact anywhere, for the very first time!

Our Parisian edit friend Reverend P hits us with a 4 track EP loaded with some serious boogie and disco heat. Concentrating on the sounds of Gladys Knight (A Side) and George Duke (B Side), Reverend P decided to edit 'em not once but twice...ouble action = double fun :)The A-side tracks are two uptempo numbers with Gladys while the flip comes with one mid tempo boogie tune and a high energy disco cut from Mr Duke.Solid GAMM material for anyone down with the more soulful sounds of disco!

Everybody Wants To

photo:
a propos:
On a fishing trip two years ago, the two main guys behind Africaine 808: D Leyers and Nomad - went to a tackle shop to buy some creepy crawlies (saltwater worms), not knowing that they were about to make a life changing discovery. In front of the shop a blind man was jammming on a little electronic organ, stomping his feet, singing, growling and basically making a scene. The boys were quite impressed with the fella, who introduced himself as 'Blind Double D'. They offered to bring him home and record him. He turned the offer down, but offered instead that they could record him on the spot in front of the tackle shop - if they bought him a bottle of good Bourbon. He explained that he would never set foot into a studio again in his life: he was sick of music production and the music industry in general, and that he just wanted this bottle of Bourbon and to be left alone. The boys got him the bottle, and recorded Blind D.D. on the spot with a tape recorder they borrowed from the tackle shop. Unfortunately, the tape was stored in one of the tackle boxes over the trip, and some of the creepy crawlies crawled into the tape and stank it all up. This added some extra funk to the recording. With Dirk and Nomad's usual studio trickery and production skills, they created the two versions of this very very funky, creepy, stanky track. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do. This record is dedicated to Blind D.D, wherever he is...
