Can't Explain EP

photo:
a propos:
With sounds as smooth as butter and grooves as juicy as jam fillings, Joe The Baker Gill has cooked up two fondant slabs of disco funk right here. There's a sweaty post-punk sheen to "Can't Explain" thanks its slap-happy bassline, fuzzy guitars and sultry vocals. "Mamba Gascoine", meanwhile, is a foggier, swampy slice of cosmic, dub-minded funk designed for the darker, heads-down moments. Remix-wise the ever-reliable Emperor Machine step forward with two epic, 10-minute workouts that explore every possible corner of Joe's jiggling, party-friendly groove.

Talking God

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Stunning new Balearica business from Swedish synth seducer Sasac; bubbling and deliciously slow and low tempo, the big synth washes shimmer over a subtle but sedate bassline. The three remixes are tailored to suit all shades of your soiree; Eddie C ups the tempo and doubles the length while maintaining the twinkle factor with relentless arpeggios. Alex Israel subverts proceedings with mischievous acid wriggles and a loose, latent funk around the beats. Benedek, meanwhile, takes us on a G-soul trip through the finest shades of 80s with the ultimate seduction version. Godly.

Join The Fookin Party!

Bastedos returns hosting two disco objects lovingly versioned by Nad. One side features the vocal talents of a mystery man with low riding balls imploring those gathered to hear him to 'join his party'...if you look at his backside, so to speak, you will head off down to sunny rainbow filled Castro for a happy sing along and dancing tune versioned from vaults of Moby Dick.

Disco Galaxie

photo:
a propos:
Whiskey Disco has put together something of an all-star cast for their latest excursion, with the mighty Jacques Renault - whose debut album drops soon on Let's Play House - and dusty-fingered scalpel fiend Kon amongst the contributors. The latter's "Promised Land" re-edit is a swirling chunk of rising disco bliss, with dreamy female vocals and twittering flutes riding an undeniably heavy - if deliciously loose - disco-funk groove. The lesser-known Love Dance impresses, too, with the Philly style heaviness, cut-glass strings, hustling grooves and impassioned vocals of "Who Is He". It's Renault who steals the show, too, dropping the delightfully camp, intergalactic dancefloor madness of "Disco Galaxie" - all starry synths, clavinet-laden grooves and madcap vocals.

Mother Confessor

photo:
a propos:
Some proper jazz funk here. Ron Trent executive produced EP that reminds of bands like Atmosfear. With its debut EP on the Future Vision label, is the band created by artist, writer and producer Jared Hines in collaboration with executive producers Ron Trent and Jonesy.Inspired by the Jazz Funk elements of UK outfit Atmosfear and the alternative Disco sounds of Dinosaur L, presented here on this EP are five tracks that embrace the energy of “live” dance music. Reminiscent of the early 80’s Boogie sound, A Band Called Flash will surely capture the attention of the more eclectic, global dance floor.

Limitless & Free

photo:
a propos:
Gerry Rooney (Black Cock) and Joel Martin (Quiet Village) return with two strong cuts on new label Love Shot Records! Opener "El Dorado" is a curious affair, taking loops from a long-forgotten, disco-era Spanish dance record and turning it into a rolling, late night chugger. Arguably even better is "Limitless & Free", which cuts up and rearranges a suitably obscure chunk of stoner funk-rock. Wisely, they emphasize the low-slung groove, rising strings and swirling synthesizers, occasionally utilizing select sections of the original's sleazy, come-to-bed vocal.

DJ Harvey 12" Cuts

photo:
a propos:
Back in 2009, DJ Harvey came knockin' at PBRC HQ to deliver a special project he had in mind. Having a long and healthy relationship with the dudes at Pacific Beach, Harv essentially produced a couple of edits that could've well been next in line on his revered Black Cock label. Eventually released in 2010, the 12" cuts caused a stir as some will recall.Doc Severinsen is an accomplished American jazz/pop trumpet player, and as a band leader gained considerable notoriety on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Like most musicians in the 70’s, Doc took his shot at the disco and funk sounds of the time, gathered stellar musicians, and released impeccably sounding works. Two of these cuts, 'Be With You' and 'Shine On Me' are featured on this release.Harvey's unfailing magic touch has yielded two DJ-friendly edits with a lot of punch and galactic energy, yet with a velvet undertone. Staying true to the mission, the label took great care throughout the production process in order to preserve the quality of the original recordings. Proprietary equipment was created to transfer the original cuts from the source. The mastering was conducted at Bernie Grundman in Hollywood, CA, known for its work on the greatest albums of all time, such as Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and Steely Dan's 'Aja'.The 2015 edition is noticeably different on the exterior. The cover art, having been designed by Harvey back in 2009 for the original release, commands attention. At the time, however, the prevailing design had been already put into play leaving these amazing creative elements put aside for a later time - and so here we are.
