Modern Jazz

Lost Myself

a propos:
Hot Casa Records presents this new project, a collaboration between Soul-Jazz singer Shola Adisa-Farrar and Jazz pianist-keyboardist Florian Pelissier.Raised on opposite sides of the Atlantic, these two artists have combined their talents to compose Lost Myself. This musical voyage blends New-York’s hard-bop aesthetics and reggae-inspired elements, with modern jazz, for a fresh spin on classics and original compositions. Vocalist Shola Adisa-Farrar, a native of Oakland, was born into a family of artists and intellectuals. Shola began singing at the age of eight, influenced by her Jamaican upbringing and the soul and jazz classics that played in her home. At a young age, Shola garnered attention for her distinct raspy voice, which enabled her to perform a variety of musical styles. After living in New-York for 8 years, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music, she is now a true resident in Paris. Shola spends her time travelling to perform and develop her musical style. This album is her explorations into Jazz.Florian Pellissier, Parisian pianist and composer, is known for the authenticity and hard-bop style he brings to his music. A graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Florian has spearheaded his own quintet along with the release of two successful albums: Le diable et son train (2012), and Biches Bleues (2014). Florian has also contributed his musical talent to jazz and funk projects such as Setenta, Camarao Orkestra, Chevere Que Son, Cotonete and GUTS.During Shola’s year-long residence as a performer for Le Reservoir’s Sunday Jazz brunch, Hot Casa Records’ honchos introduced Shola to Florian, sensing they would musically complement each other. In July 2013, their collaboration began, bonding over their love of jazz autobiographies, swapping music, and improvising together. The result is eight spiritually-tinged jazz tracks recorded live on analog equipment to maintain the traditional quality, from sultry introspections to rhythmic compositions, grounded in intense emotion. Included are jazz classics such as “Feeling Good” and “I Have a Dream”, a tribute to the music of Herbie Hancock, who has influenced Florian since his formative years in New York, to which Shola penned lyrics.

Neckbone EP

photo:
a propos:
This Ep announces the release of the 5th album Anthony Joseph. These extracts are highly anticipated by his fans but also for music lovers Jazz / Funk. In this new track, Anthony Joseph chose to work alongside Sly Johnson and his talent to bring a piece in another dimension. On the devastating “Neckbone”, we found poetry of Anthony chanted in pure Caribbean style, not far from that of one of its models Linton Kwesi Johnson. For the chorus, from this Caribbean accent you could cut with a knife, hides Sly Johnson.A track made for the dancefloor with a big catchy bassline. On the B side, we find the percussive "Mano A Mano", poetry on a percussion avalanche in the purest style of the Last Poets.

Back in Stock!!!BADBADNOTGOOD is a young supremely talented trio of musicians made up of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on drums. Since their inception at Humber College’s Music Performance program in 2011, the three have challenged the rule book on improvised instrumental music and taken jazz tradition into the future. With early champions including acclaimed BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson and Tyler The Creator who helped fuel their discovery with a series of live jams that instantly went viral and dubbed them the “Odd Trio”, the band released their first EP BBNG in June 2011 to wide praise. The marriage of jazz virtuosity and hip hop source material offered a fresh take on the traditional “standard” applied to hip hop classics by taking on choice cuts from the golden era rap cannon and writing inspired arrangements for them instead of one-dimensional covers. The band hit a landmark by introducing original material into their composi- tions with BBNG2 in 2012. New songs like “Rotten Decay”, “Vices” or “UWM” carried on the proud heritage of musical juxtaposition by bringing together jazz, hip hop, punk, and dance music into vigorous balance. Since then, they’ve won praise from the four corners of the globe and collaborated with Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, MF Doom, Pharaoh Monch and RZA among many. Their no- torious live performances have brought fans across the whole musical spectrum together, taking the band around the world from Coachella to Glastonbury. Now, the inseparable friends are prepping to release their biggest project to date III on prodigious young label Innovative Leisure, a highly-anticipated project ushering in the group’s newest explorations which are proving to be limitless.

Elaenia

photo:
a propos:
London centric debut album from Floating Points with a host of guest musicians and vocalists. the label say " Sam Shepherd spent five years putting together Elaenia, juggling the production with his DJ commitments and his now-completed PhD in neuroscience. The album takes its inspiration from classical, jazz, electronic music, soul and Brazilian music, much of which can be heard in Shepherd's DJ sets. There's a long list of contributors, with Tom Skinner and Leo Taylor (drums), Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne and Layla Rutherford (vocals), Susumu Mukai (bass), Alex Reeve (guitar), Qian Wu and Edward Benton (violins), Matthew Kettle (viola) and Joe Zeitlin (cello) all featuring. Shepherd also provides some of the vocals.Shepherd's influence on the album extends to the cover art: he built his own harmonograph to create Elaenia's sleeve, using fibre optic cables that were connected to light sources and responded to bass drum hits and other sounds.Aside from a couple of early excursions on R2 Records and Planet Mu, Shepherd's solo material has come out through Eglo Records, the label he co-runs with Alex Nut. Records like Vacuum, Shepherd's breakthrough release in 2009, and 2011's Shadows, which scored a five-star review on RA, have cemented his reputation as a classy, inventive producer. On top of that he's also released music from his Floating Points Ensemble project, and produced some of Fatima's 2014 album, Yellow Memories. "

The label says; When Miles Davis meets the Beastie Boys that gives this kind of quality product to consume without moderation. 12 tracks of pure madness venturing us into the regions of Jazz / Soul to the percussive Rock riffs! Leron is at ease in each of these styles and proves it with this album. We strongly advise you!

Another new signature on Heavenly Sweetness, the leftfield duet Baron Retif & Concepcion Perez. They already released 3 ep on Musique Large label and did remixes for Laurent Garnier or Jacaranda Muse, and produced some beats for french rapper Rocé or Coeff.Half studio-rats, half live voodoos, the duet makes a music which did not choose beween to dream and dance, explore and relax.A new direction for Baron Rétif & Concepción Perez as their trademark minimal funk flow and singular cosmic hip-hop, is mixed with future dub...Instead of many beatmakers, their music is playing live, Baron Retif on drums and sequences and Concepcion Perez on the keyboards. They mix in their music their large musical influences from root reggae to modern beats, infused with soul and jazz.

Full Moon Wizard

photo:
a propos:
"Full Moon Wizard” by Massive Suits Quartet (MSQ) is a personal journey by it’s creator Grégoire Marty (aka Dandy Teru) delving into his love of original movie soundtracks and various composers. Crafting a sonic and aural odyssey for a movie that exists only in his mind and imagination. Similar to his other projects such as his debut album Adventures as Dandy Teru or the Wonderland EP as MSQ, this new opus was roughly composed in a very short time, in about a week or so while also working on collaborations and releases with other artists. The busy schedule and loads of studio time provided the necessary inspiration and state of mind to construct the LP properly. The end goal was to pay tribute to the compositions of various soundtracks of both old and more recent movies, and to show the producer's love for composers such as Umiliani, Piccioni, Goraguer, Legrand, Cliff Martinez, H.Zimmer, Danny Elfman, and Alexandre Desplats to name a few. With sci-fi cinema as the main foundation, and using his fascination for astronomy along with personal existential queries about life's origins, one's purpose and our place and scale in the universe as building blocks, a story emerges sketched out of rough compositions and surreal mindscapes. In his own words: "Technically, I wanted it to sound dusty and ethereal. I like to say that I try to make MSQ's sound something in between Madlib and Portishead signatures... Full Moon Wizard is the story of the creation of a world from the largest scale of its complexity to its smallest. It's a route from the beginning of something we don't have the knowledge and skills to understand (yet) to things we are more familiar with today, trying to make the connections between the dots along the whole journey. Definitely an album for nightowls, for mood music and soundtrack lovers.” I like it, reminds me of other projects like 40winks in this vibe, but more jazzy. But it's more like vibes, rather than real tracks from start to end... Perfect midnight soundtrack. and the artwork is nice too. -Lefto
