Let's Do It Today (Procrastination)/Peace

Western Michigan had a very healthy music scene throughout the '60s and '70s, with Georgia-born soul legend Jackey Beavers (aka Jackie Beavers) and producer Palmer James forging that area's soul identity. Beavers produced the recording by this obscure band from Battle Creek and issued their only 45 on his Jaber label. The rhythm section of Wright, Teasley and Scurlock were better known as Jr. Walker's All Star group, and they made this recording shortly before leaving the bandleader's ranks. The Us would share ties with the Apachies (track 20), for both bands included at some point members of Jr Walker's All Stars. Trombonist Jack Hill would be involved in both bands and would help create the unique arrangement on 'Let's Do It Today.' Bassist Larry Scurlock recounts the origin behind the song's theme, "We were ready to get on with it. No draggin' around, let's do this now, today is the day! I've lived this motto for all of my life."The full-length version here shows The Us head into psychedelic regions in the final minutes of the song that have never been heard since they were recorded over 30 years ago. "I wrote it in less than half a day to get some royalties" remembers Scurlock. "We were experimenting with tuning, a quarter tone below the note. We were sure under the influence back in those days!"Recorded 1969 at Midwestern Sound Studios, Grand Rapids, MIProduced by Jackey BeaversArranged by Jack HillPersonnel - Doug Cassens (tenor sax), Philip Wright (guitar, vocals), Larry Scurlock (bass, vocals), Jerome Teasley (drums)Unreleased full version of this rare 45 for the first time.Cut from tape to lathe by the masters at Timmion Cutting Lab.

First time I heard this track out was D.Jing with Adrian Gibson, booker/manager for the London Jazz Cafe in its hay day in the early 2000s, i thought it was some crazy obscusre early Jacksons 45. I had no idea what it was but i liked it and it stuck with me. As my eyes were on 45's at the time it passed me by until Numero Group reissued it on their fabulous 'Soul Messengers' compilation (essential purchase if you don't own). After quite a bit of badgering Rob Sevier, Co-owner of Numero Group, let this grace my format of choice, so here we are, both sides first outing as a single. Essential

AOR Global Sounds 1977 - 1982

photo:
a propos:
Following the recent success of French Disco Boogie Sounds, DJ and producer Charles Maurice is back on Favorite Recordings, this time engaging a musical World tour, in the search of hidden productions with a touch of AOR style. The result is AOR Global Sounds, a new compilation made of 8 forgotten and rare tracks produced between 1977 and 1982 in all parts of the globe. At the end of the 70s, many artists over the world were deeply influenced by AOR’s famous stars such as Steely Dan and his classic Aja LP, looking to reach the same attention to sound production and details, and this specific Westcoast style mixing together Pop-Rock standards, with Soul (sometime Disco) and Jazz influences. From Erik Tagg in Netherlands, and Ulla in Poland, to Diane Tell in Quebec, and Nohelani Cypriano in Hawaï, Charles Maurice found a real link between these 8 great songs and artists, in their music clearly infused with this special AOR touch, in a Soulful and Disco way. This perfect soundtrack for the summer has been fully remastered from original versions, and is presented by Favorite Recordings in a deluxe vinyl version, housed in a tip-on jacket. A must have for rare-groove music collectors and many more…

The Mr. K Edits

Danny Krivit returns to the vinyl source with two killer edits for Paul Raffaele's Most Excellent Unltd. Label. He kicks off with a Cymande version that's been lurking in his crates for well over a decade. Taking the iconic bassline and stretching the Dickens out of it, it's a kindly reminder of how well Danny understands groove dynamics. Absolutely perfect for teasing a crowd before dropping the classic original. Flip for a shake-up of Niagara's "Sangondongo". A dedication to the drums whipped up with shamanic feels, say hello to your brand new favourite secret mixing weapon.

I Want Your Love

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Proto-house classic 'Nightgruv' gets a re-release and includes a longer unreleased edit! James Mason is mostly known for his late 70's album 'Rhythm Of Life', which is a soul-jazz classic. Soon after music trends shifted to (electronic) disco and James' music became out of fashion, leaving 'Rhythm Of Life' to be the only album he released to date. The early early 80′s saw him have a few studio sessions from which more electronic output like Wuf Ticket’s ‘The Key (Prelude Records) resulted. James also produced various disco acts like Disco 3, Earl Flint and Brenda Bayton. However, most of his early 80s studio sessions have remained unreleased until today. ‘Nightgruv’, which was recorded in 1984, did eventually get a release when it was picked up 12 years later (!) by a small UK indie label and was again reissued in 2000 by Soul Brother. Both pressings are still highly sought after and go for a lot of money on Discogs, mostly to do with the timeless nature of this prototype house wonder, which sounds like a recording Larry Heard never made. A magically seductive groove, recorded at a time when house was still in its infant years. Not only is this release offering a remastered version of the original, it also includes an unreleased edit which stretches the original to a cool 6 minutes. The B-side features the epic 11 minute original version of 'I Want Your Love', a soul classic. Comes with original artwork!

Give Me One More Chance

photo:
a propos:
The Year Was 1972 And The Paths Of A Young Songwriter And A Record Label Owner Were Destined To Cross Paths. After Spending A Couple Of Years At Curtis Mayfield'S Curtom Records In His Hometown Of Chicago, Ron Grace Ventured To The Northern Suburb Of Waukegan, Illinois. After Recording Projects At Plynth Studios In Libertyville, Studio Owner Tom Izzo Intoduced Ron Grace To Morris "Ronnie" Moore, Owner Of The Tra-Mor Record Label. The Two Instantly Messed And Grace Produced A Single On Tra-Mor'S Lone Srtist At The Time, Ernest Jones. That Session Resulted In "I Can'T Live Without You" B/W "Broken Dreams". The Record Made A Bit Of Local Noise And Subsequently Became A "Northern Soul" Collectable In The U.K. After Making Grace A Partner At Tra-Mor, Moore Wanted To Expnd His Artist Roster. Grace Then Called On His Curtom Colleague, Cliff Curry Of The Notations. Cliff Proceeded To Connect Them With Group That He Had Often Worked With -The Procedures.Consisting Of Fred Escobar, Billy Sims, Robert Smith, And Anthony Mcdaniels, The First Release Of The Procedures Was A Tune Co-Writen By Fred Escobar And Brad Bobo-"Magic Mirror". The Arrangement Was Done By Chicago Legend Tom Washington(Tom Tom '84). Backed With The Instrumental Track, The Record Was Barely Noticed. For The Second Release In 1975, Ron Grace Offered A Une He'D Written And Cut On Himself A Year Earlier. His And Fred'S Voices Were Close Enough That It Stayed In The Original Key. "Give Me One More Chance" Would Be The Procedures Next Single, Backed With A Revamped "Magic Mirror". At This Time, The Procedures Themselves Were Revamped, With The Addition Of Walter Jones (Five Crowns: Notations) Replacing Anthony Mcdaniels. Tom Tom'S Arrangements Were Brilliant. The Sessions Were Cut At Gary Hedden'S Hedden Est Studios In Nearby Schaumburg. The Session Musicians Were Comprised Of Who'S Who Of Chicago Studio Players. Included Were The Likes Of Phil Upchurch, John Bishop, Bernard Reed, Quinton Joseph, Murray Watson, Sol Bobroy, Etc. -Veterans Of Many Brunswick, Chess And Curtom Recording Sessions.Alas, A Lack Of Distribution And Promotion This Record Hidden In Darkness, But This Kay-Dee Release Brings It Into Thee Light For A New Generation That Values Music Of A Bygone Era With New Mixes From Kenny Dope From The Original Multi Track Masters.

Beach Diggin Volume 3

photo:
a propos:
BACK IN STOCK Gatefold 180 Gram Vinyl LP + MP3 Download CodeIt’s the season of the juiciest, sweetest fruit, of shorts, tank tops and thongs, the time of year when you look at life through a dark pair of sunglasses. Summer is also the time of year when lovers of soul, disco, funk, bossa, jazz and other similar grooves get together to enjoy the sunny vibrations sampled by Guts and Mambo from the world over. Since 2013, this duo has trademarked and branded its acoustic discoveries with the appellation Beach Diggin’, a label that certifies the quality and rarity of its products and guarantees a maximum dose of sunshine for every groove. Braving the hordes of sugar-hungry bees swarming around boxes of Caribbean records, the humidity in the holds of boats, or jostling to save 45’s lying on the ground from being trampled underfoot, Guts and Mambo, at the risk of their own lives, have explored the most far-flung corners of the earth, all for a single purpose: To discover and to share.Because in the end, the geographic origin matters little. Even if the golden triangle of Brazil, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago remains the largest supplier, Beach Diggin’ is above all a way of being, a way of living the moment and life in general to the fullest. Permanent coolitude on the BPM, fast or slow, an epicureanism that is equally at ease whether its produced with a sense of Amazonian luxuriousness or the sparse comfort of a deserted beach, a reserve of a few degrees of heat to put on the turntable when it gets cold outside. So, it’s not surprising that tracks from Eastern Europe, North Africa, or the US have quickly received their stamp of approval. In this third compilation, just as in the previous two, the rule remains: Beach Diggin’ is a state of mind...

Nohelani

photo:
a propos:
Riding high on the crest of the global love for Hawaiian 'Island Funk', Be With Records team up with Aloha Got Soul to present a timely vinyl reissue of Nohelani Cypriano's Nohelani. Sure to be one of the year's essential reissues, the album's irresistible blend of tropical-tinted soul, funk and rare groove sounds every bit as fresh today as it would've in 1979.Perhaps the most sought-after record of its type, locating a vinyl copy of 'Nohelani' would previously have set you back a small fortune. Her records are something of a Balearic holy grail, with this album the holiest of the lot. Original copies are in such short supply - trading for upwards of £100 on secondary markets - it's easy to see why news of this first ever reissue has been welcomed by so many. This release is officially licensed and has been lovingly mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis (Claremont 56 mastering engineer) It has been pressed on audiophile 180gram vinyl for the first time and features the original artwork.A record to surrender to in full rather than consume in pieces, it pivots around centrepiece 'Island Boy'. A record of many colours, the LP is at once spaced-out boogie and sweet soul. The legendary 'Lihue' is worth the entry fee alone. A gloriously carefree showcase of a uniquely Hawaiian musical hybrid, this reissue provides a vital reminder of just how beautiful and important Nohelani is.
