a propos:
Danny Krivit's name has been synonymous with quality, underground dance music for many decades now. His roles as re-edit pioneer, legendary NYC disc jock and all around music obsessive have long been written about. Danny is approaching 45 years as a DJ, almost half a century behind the decks across the world and he shows no sign in stopping anytime soon fortunately! Quite fitting then, that he has opened up his personal, private archive of re-edits for all of us Disco fiends to enjoy and play over and over with this limited, fully licensed 12" release.Any self respecting Disco head should be familiar with the name Voyage. Releasing on Miami's legendary TK Disco imprint as well as numerous other well known labels, Voyage have a dedicated cult following for their percussion heavy euro Disco sounds. Here Mr.K takes on one of their most famous cuts on the A-side - "Lady America" and teases all of the best bits about this uptempo anthem out into the open and straight onto the dancefloor! Breaks are elongated, the right parts are looped in just the right way and the tracks momentum is pushed right through the roof, a Disco bomb indeed! On the B-side we have "Point Zero", a smorgasbord of Afro percussions, chants and rhythms that will literally tear the roof off any club! again DK has tweaked this monster track in all the right places adding his magical editing touch with love and respect, essential stuff and a total dancefloor weapon! Both tracks contained on this 12" have been fully licensed and legitimately reissued in conjunction with Danny Krivit / TK Disco. These edits have been lovingly reworked by Danny with dancers and DJ's alike in mind. A very special release indeed and one that all Disco heads will undoubtedly be excited to see in the shops! Essential release.

Love Somebody/Hazy Shades.. (Danny Krivit Edits)

photo:
a propos:
NYC Disco legend Danny Krivit returns to the editing block on behalf of seminal Miami Disco powerhouse TK Disco. With 45 years in the DJ game under his belt and having played endless gigs all over the world during that time it's safe to say Mr.K knows exactly what he's doing when it comes to the re-edit thing! With unprecedented access to TK's vaults Danny has been turning in some stellar reworkings as of late and the cuts included on this latest instalment keep the quality sky high!Jo Bisso's unique Disco sound has long been popular with fans of underground dance music, his long percussive cuts have always done the business for DJ's who dig deeper for their sounds giving Bisso some cult "hits" under his belt. "Love somebody" was originally released in 1977 and clocked in at a staggering 16 minutes across 2 separate parts on the LP. Step in editing royalty Danny Krivit, who blesses us with yet another essential Disco weapon in the form of his punchier, stripped back edit of this monster cut. As usual with a Mr.K edit all the right parts have been left in, everything's been touched, reworked, extended and tweaked in just the right ways, the only way a master knows how! This one will work any dance-floor and will sound huge on a good system! Trust us, give it a spin! On the flip we have an extended Mr.K edit of Amant's "Hazy shades of love" lifted from their 1978 self titled LP on TK offshoot Marlin. Amant was another production pseudonym of Ray Martinez, the legendary artist, engineer, producer and remixer who worked with numerous artists including Mongo Santamaria, George McCrae, Quincy Jones and many more. The original version of the track clocked in at over 13 minutes in length and again Danny's edit has packed all the hot action into 9 minutes of Disco heat! 100% legit re-edits, remastered and released in conjunction with Henry Stone Music / TK Disco - Miami FL.

Hold On

auteur:

a propos:
Stone cold 1982 NYC Boogie here from the mighty SAM Records catalogue! You cannot go wrong with this supreme cut from this short-lived group. "Hold On" was their first release and boasted the studio and mixing prowess of 2 of the most legendary figures in early 80's dance music - John "Jellybean" Benitez and Daryl Payne, both of whom were behind numerous club hits of the time and rightfully deserve a mention when talking about this particular influential era of music. "Jellybean" was the resident DJ at the infamous Funhouse in NYC and he went on to work with major artists including Deodato, Talking Heads, Madonna, The Pointer Sisters and many many more. Daryl Payne also turned in a serious amount of music and was behind such underground dance anthems as Sharon Redd's "Beat The Street", NV's "It's Alright", Elektrik Funk's "On A Journey" and a host of others! You know on this particular release the quality control is of the highest standard! If you're into that sparse, electronic and funky early 80's Boogie / electro Disco sound then you won't be disappointed with this one. A guaranteed floor-filler of the highest calibre! Reissued in conjunction with SAM records, New York City. Fully remastered with all original 1981 label artwork intact.

Downtown Sounds Classics Volume 4

photo:
a propos:
Dublin based disco imprint Fatty Fatty Phonographics return with the 4th instalment of their 'Downtownsounds Classics' series, this time throwing three stone-cold classics onto one 12, all given the re-edit treatment by in house producers Pablo and Shoey.Voiced by Leroy Burgess, with drums by hip hop legend Marley Marl and production by The Aleem Brothers, 'Release Yourself' was a huge across-the-board anthem in the clubs of NYC on its release in 1984. The lads have superglued elements of both the vocal and dub sides together for an epic end of night take on this beloved classic. The B side features two under appreciated classics from the pen of one Billy Nichols, a man known for his work with West End Records (the Levan mixed 'Give Your Body Up To The Music') and the funky band of brothers that was BT Express. On 'Take Me...' Nichols' hooked up with disco master Patrick Adams for an emotional, string drenched disco belter that has found favour with the likes of Dimitri from Paris, Floating Points and Hunee. While 'Dance If Off' is a wonky proto Acid-Disco trip beloved of Rahaan and Eric Duncan of Rub 'n' Tug. With copies going for over 300 euros, you can do your bank account and your dancefloor a favour here...

Just Do You

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Just Do You is the first single from underground super-producer Lord Echo's hotly anticipated 3rd album 'Harmonies'. So long has it's gestation been that it has reached a status reserved only for the mythical and the absurd. Some say it will never be finished with the album devouring its host creator and assuming a life of its own - but this first single proves other wise.Lord Echo emerges from the darkness with a gleaming diamond in his hand - a slice of pure disco dub indulgence with all the rough trimmings that have made him a cult favourite from Tokyo to Trinidad. With the real life concerns of the DJ always foremost in his mind, this 12" has something for every occasion with two different vocals and a radical excursion into the realm of left field disco dub that record collectors sweat over in feverish night dreams of cult record acquisition. Both vocalists are long time Lord Echo collaborators : Electric Wire Hustles' Mara TK and Fat Freddies Drop's Toby Laing.Mara's version sees the golden voiced visionary wax lyrical on a night time affair stemming from a tiresome diplomatic function in a sweaty, exotic location deep in the recess' of your mind. Toby's vocal was recorded in a hotel room in France on one of Fat Freddies Drop's sweeping European Tours and features some of the most obtuse yet deeply penetrating lines in contemporary songbook narrative.

Carthago: Rare Tunisian Disco Including Unreleased Instrumentals And Eight Page BookletWhen we first decided to start Habibi Funk, a label dedicated to re-releasing „funky" Arabic music from the 1960s to 1980s, a band called Dalton was the first release we worked on. Dalton was a band from the Tunisian capital of Tunis and they played a unique mix of soul & funk with an Arabic DNA. We licensed the release from the band’s composer Fawzi Chekili, and when we spoke to him on the phone in preparation of the release he mentioned another band he was part of, called Carthago. Our work with Habibi Funk is like a big treasure hunt. There are too many great bands that fully vanished into obscurity and didn’t leave any traces in the digital sphere yet. We are so used to the internet providing all informations we might be looking for, but Carthago was one of those bands where the internet largely failed to provide any infos despite the fact that Carthago created some incredible music in the form of an highly infectious Tunisian take on disco music. Luckily most of the members of the 1970s musical scene of Tunis are still around to tell their story.Carthago was founded in the late 1970s as a fusion of Dalton and a second band called Marhaba Band. Both bands frequently played at hotels and night clubs in Tunis and Sousse. They had similar musical influences and despite the fact that they were competition for the most part, they came up with the idea to join forces for a new band. Musically Carthago kept on walking on the musical path of Dalton and Marhaba but incorporated disco music, a new style that was making its way to North Africa from Europe and North America. The band had quite some success on local radio and played a number of big shows with thousands of people showing up. The band’s concerts were a mixture of their own compositions as well as cover versions of the hits of the time from Stevie Wonder to Chicago. At the end of the 70s they went to Paris to record their only, self titled album. For our reissue we picked out two of our favorite tracks: „Hanen“ and the outstanding disco version of the Dalton track „Alech“ which has proved to work on every dance floor we played over the last two years. When I came to Tunis for the first time after the Dalton reissue I met Fawzi in person. He still lives in Tunis and still works as a full time musician though his focus has shifted more towards Jazz over the years. Luckily he did not only keep a spotless copy of the Carthago album but he also kept the master tape of the instrumental versions of the album which to this day were unreleased. Being able to add exclusive content to a reissue is something that is rare and we feel highly privileged to be able to do so. Futher more we are so happy that we will be able to add something new to the bands legacy not only musically but also visually: One day I realized that most of the releases from Tunisia I liked, be it from Dalton, Carthago or Marhaba Band had the same photographer credit.Hassen Turki started taking photos at a young age and when he was 18 he started going to the gigs of the bands of the time that were playing in the Marhaba Hotel which was managed by his father at the time. He became friends with the bands and ended up being the person to be asked when it came to shooting the photos for the covers of the records. After some research I managed to get in touch with Hassen and met him in his hometown Sousse. Luckily he kept most of the negatives of the photos he took so we’re more than happy to be able to share these unseen photos with whoever is interested.

Snake Face

photo:
a propos:
Limited LP & 7" pack from synth pop(?) giant, Design A Wave.... Big sound on these cool electronic disco edged cuts.. Hangman style design by Cosmo Knex - big TIP! Copenhagen based conceptual music act Design A Wave returns with ‘Snakeface’, a document of surprise within the composition process. Specifically, Design A Wave uses the computer to create several beats and then utilises the mutated results as building blocks for several new compositions.Interest in computer-synthetic SNAKES, beyond all networks of communication and agency art, centres on placing these formless serpents into existing genres, such as music. Snakeface is a timely exploration of the infectious qualities of music, and how it too, as a carrier, makes it’s way through neural networks, irreducible to bits and designed to infiltrate and replicate.
