People Of The Sun

photo:
a propos:
We could say that with this sixth studio album Anthony Joseph is back to his roots. Indeed, it was recorded on his native island of Trinidad. But it is more of a continuation, of a culmination…. as the Caribbean music has strongly infused the music of Anthony since its inception .This album entitled "People of the sun" is a tribute to Port of Spain (POS), this bubbling port, meeting place of many cultures and a door open on South America. This energy is found throughout the album with many stars of the island (3 channel, Brother Resistance, Ella Andal, Boogsie the king of steel pan ...) and pays tribute to Rapso, a mixture of protest poetry and Soca / Calypso created in the 80’s. As always the verb remains in the spotlight with Anthony Joseph.

Boston Goes Disco!

photo:
a propos:
BBE present Boston Goes Disco compiled by Serge Gamesbourg.During the 1970s and 80s, the city of Boston and its environs produced some of the era’s most iconic music stars, from rock megaliths like Aerosmith and The Cars to disco and soul celebutantes Donna Summer, New Edition and Tavares. These artists emerged from Beantown’s thriving underground music scene to fnd global success, but what about the countless contemporaries who never made it beyond the local circuit? Native DJ, producer and bass playerSerge Gamesbourg began digging in the crates for forgotten gems more than two decades ago, emerging in 2018 with his frst BBE compilation, lovingly titled Boston Goes Disco! “I wanted to shed light on more obscure & unknown disco & boogie records outta Boston and the surrounding areas, basically small label and privately pressed late 70s and early 80s dance music from Massachusetts.” Turning detective as he began to track down many an obscure artist to license music for the album, Gamesbourg often found Boston’s legendary Berklee College of Music to be the common denominator for many bands throughout the years. “A lot of these cats came here real young to study from various parts of the country, met the other band members and wrote music and performed locally before fnishing their studies and moving on.”With artwork paying homage to 80’s rap compilation “Boston Goes Def”, Boston Goes Disco! provides an exciting insight into the city during its most culturally fertile period, uncovering a rich musical history previously only known to those who were there.

After overwhelming request we decided to unearth Moniquea’s classic cover of “Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” and dance floor heater “Break No Hearts”. Originally only released on cassette in 2015 as a part of our “Is This The Future” show series, “Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” is a testament to the supreme workmanship and masterful duo of Moniquea and XL Middleton, these two didn’t cover this song, they gave it the treatment! Moniquea pours herself in and holds nothing back, electrifying the classic with her seductive voice and unmatched intensity, even though she didn’t mean to, you’re definitely going to be turned on! “Break No Hearts” continues the dance floor intensity with Moniquea’s masterful original songwriting and ability to spill game over songs like no one else can! Her lyrics and seductive voice will not only level up your life, they will level up the dance floor as they lay over the uptempo, silky smooth, electrofunk freestyle groove that sits on three wheels with that G Funk lean-created by the one and only funk surgeon XL Middleton! Guaranteed not to break your 45’s box big heart, and burn up the dance floor worldwide!

Ed Motta Presents Too Slow To Disco Brasil Edits

photo:
a propos:
Santa Cruz - Mais Uma Chance (Jack Tennis Remix): Looks like everybody fell in love with „Mais Uma Chance“ by Santa Cruz. It is one of the standout- and most played tracks of TSTD Brasil. So now Berlin’s Jack Tennis put his magic hands on the song and delivers a striking DJ-friendly Yacht-Disco version. Edinho Santa Cruz loves the track so much, that we just had to release it officially. Berlin producer Jack Tennis is the mastermind behind a lot of projects. He releases his own music under the name Hotlane (signed to Gomma Records) and spreads his Disco-Edits for UK’s influential Disco Label Midnight Riot (run by Yam Who!).Les Inferno – Brazilewis: To round up things we were able to convince italian Rework/Edit legend Les Inferno to give us his previously unrelesaed track „Brazilewis“, a chillout slo-mo groover, that you can find in all of DJ Supermarkt’s sets for some time now. Les Inferno releases on Samosa Records, one of the hippest new Edit/Rework labels (striclty vinyl). His tracks were already championed by none other then Mister Moodyman himself.

This Ain't Really Love

photo:
a propos:
Kalita Records present the first ever official reissue of the Sophisticated Ladies sought-after 1980 New York disco single 'This Ain't Really Love' backed with a Mighty Zaf extended B-Side edit.Kalita Records are proud and honoured to announce the first ever official reissue of the Sophisticated Ladies' sought-after 1980 New York disco single 'This Ain't Really Love', backed by a Mighty Zaf extended edit of their 1977 release 'Check It Out', and accompanied by interview-based liner notes. Here, the single will be available in its true 12” format, saving collectors and DJs alike from spending triple-digit figures on an original copy.First formed in 1955, the Sophisticated Ladies started their recording life as the R&B girl group The Bobbettes, originally consisting of five female vocalists (Jannie Pought, Emma Pought, Reather Dixon, Laura Webb and Helen Gathers). The group were signed to the Atlantic record label and were most known for their 1957 hit single ‘Mr. Lee’, which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Pop singles chart and remained #1 on the R&B chart for four weeks. They were in fact the first girl group to have a #1 R&B song which also was placed in the top ten of the singles chart. However, by the mid-1970s and with the emergence of the disco era, the Bobbettes changed their name to the Sophisticated Ladies. As Emma Patron (nee Pought) recalled to me in the winter of 2017, The Bobbettes’ success with ‘Mr. Lee’ had been both a blessing and a curse – on the one hand it had provided them with international fame, yet by the 1970s it had become a constant weight and drag upon the group, type-casting and inhibiting their development as artists. Thus, upon the suggestion of their managers and producers Joe Webb and Frank Fair, the name The Bobbettes was lost, replaced now by the Sophisticated Ladies. Not only did this provide the opportunity for a clean sheet, but it also allowed them to have an image change from a girl group to a female disco outfit, as Joe recalls, ‘when we changed the name and gave the band a more soulful, disco sound, it made a huge difference’.The Sophisticated Ladies (by this time consisting of Emma, Laura and Reather) released two singles between 1977 and 1980. They toured the southern states of America (whilst also touring internationally as the Bobbettes) and received radio airtime throughout the country. Here we have chosen to highlight their scarce, choice cut ‘This Ain’t Really Love’ and have invited The Mighty Zaf to re-work their version of Bobby Womack’s ‘Check It Out’, making it perfect for modern disco dancing.- First ever official reissue of sought-after New York disco 12” single- Accompanied by an extended edit by The Mighty Zaf of their 1977 release 'Check It Out' engineered by Phil Asher- Includes extensive liner notes based on interviews with band member Emma Pought and manager/producer Joe Webb

Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics (OST)

photo:
a propos:
Strut repress a classic from 2010, The Heliocentrics’ groundbreaking studio collaboration with Lloyd Miller, ‘(OST)’.Recorded following their award-winning collaboration with Ethio jazz pioneer, Mulatu Astatke (Mojo magazine Top 50 of the year 2009, Sunday Times World Music Album of the year), pioneering UK collective The Heliocentrics resurfaced with another fascinating jazz enigma, ethno-musicologist, jazz maestro and multi-instrumentalist, Lloyd Miller. Learning various instruments and immersing himself in New Orleans jazz through his father, a professional clarinet player, Lloyd Miller first trained himself in the styles of George Lewis and Jimmy Giuffre and cut his first Dixieland jazz 78 rpm record in 1950. During the late ‘50s, his father landed a job in Iran and Miller began to develop a lifelong interest in Persian and Eastern music forms, learning to play a vast array of traditional ethnic instruments from across Asia and the Middle East.He toured Europe heavily, basing himself in Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Germany (where he played with Eddie Harris and Don Ellis) and, most famously, in Paris where he worked with leftfield bandleader Jef Gilson, a phenomenon in French jazz during the early ‘60s. Miller returned to the Middle East during the ‘70s, landing his own TV show on NIRTV in Tehran under the name Kurosh Ali Khan. His show became a national fixture and ran for seven years. More recently, his mid-‘60s album ‘Oriental Jazz’ has become a collector’s favourite.Emerging from an acoustic jazz session in 2007 set up by Jazzman, the Heliocentrics collaboration was recorded at the band’s Quatermass Studios in East London during January and February 2010, a fresh, freeform mix of Eastern arrangements, jazz and angular psychedelics. The recordings involved a number of ethnic instruments that Miller played and studied throughout his career including the oud, Phonofiddle, Indian santur, Chinese shawm and wooden flute. Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics’ ‘(OST)’ will be repressed on its original 2LP format, 1000 copies only.

The Pop World Orchestra

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
In the '70s, Yan Tregger was far to believe he would become one of the most emblematic artists in the "sound illustration" scene. Yet today, his albums are highly coveted by "diggers" all around the world. At the time, nobody paid much attention to all those records that were classified as sound illustrations, or library music.Yan Tregger started out in this environment in the late '60s. He was remarked after making several recordings for the credits of TV shows, and received a proposal to compose his first album. It was a small label (Marignan), the sleeve design was skimpy and the track titles were bizarre... Yet when you listened, the sound was seriously groovy. The album was called Freezing Point and a mere 300 copies were pressed. Thanks to this first test, other "illustration" professionals were convinced by Tregger’s qualities. During this period, there was no lack of work but there was no glory on the program either. In the '70s, many different labels such as Neuilly, Montparnasse 2000, or the Italian CAM label, called on his services. Shortly afterwards, Philips released two of his records under the name Major Symphony, and then Polydor issued the two M.B.T. Soul albums, including one international success, "Chase".Up until now, despite the interest shown in his discography, no reissue had been undertaken - an omission that has just been fixed thanks to the release of a compilation that we are pleased to present. Let's start with the main information: the tracks included on the album were selected jointly by a number of collectors and Yan Tregger himself. The selection is rich and surprising. The A side is more "seventies", with an instrumental pop style and a psychedelic vibe, while the B side is more rhythmic and melodious, corresponding more with the funky disco moods of the eighties.
