You Think You Really Know Me

2018 version Gold Foil Cover Edition vinyl issue of Gary Wilson's monumental 1977 LP, with extra pics galore. It is the sound of a 23 year-old oddball from upstate New York, wrestling with his demons and actually winning. There's nothing quite like it. And it offers a story of hope to every weirdo who hears it. Hallelujah!Owen Maerck wrote liner notes describing what it was like for the first Gary Wilson fan on the planet. You Think You Really Know Me (also the title of Michael Wolk's 2005 documentary about Gary) was Wilson's second LP, but the first he recorded as a vocalist, hewing to his own bizarre vision -- a syncretic collision of romance, new-wave cocktail-jazz, heartbreak, disco-porn soundtrack music, and experimental tape manipulation. Home recorded in Endicott, NY, the album found few fans when released, but subsequently became the exclusive purview of record collectors and the women who tolerate them.

Directstep

photo:
a propos:
Repress of Hancocks 1979 Japanese only album, check the killer (15 minute long) disco jam ''I Thought It Was You''.. , Butterfly starts of very mellow and then turns into a bangin fusion / disco jam.. Slowly taking it back into the mellow again! Great record really.Throughout the mid-to-late 1970s, legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock engaged in a prolonged period of experimentation across sounds and recording formats, over the course of several CBS/Sony albums, made only available in Japan. 1979's Directstep was one such album, one that made use of a new form of recording technology called "Direct-To-Disc." This method recorded masters in real time to acetate discs, rendering incredibly high fidelity LP pressings, but sacrificing the ability to edit or overdub. A distinct challenge, but one that Hancock accepted, entering Tokyo's CBS/Sony Studios in mid-October of 1978 with a stacked backing band including session veterans Bennie Maupin on saxophone, Ray Obiedo on guitar, Webster Lewis on keys and synths, Paul Jackson on bass, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion. This group of seasoned pros were intent on having a record in one take.Directstep marked a lot of firsts for Hancock, chief among them was that it was one of his earliest recordings to feature a second synthesizer player (Webster Lewis), which was necessary to produce the electronic textures he'd been previously experimenting with on albums like 1974's Dedication. It was also the first one in Hancock's catalogue to make extensive use of the Sennheiser Vocoder, which would become a key part of his arsenal during his electro-funk period during the 1980s. The album also stands out as one of the earliest analog recordings to be converted into digital format and released on compact disc.

Origens Da Luz

photo:
a propos:
Music From Memory is delighted to announce a retrospective of an artist long-loved by the label, Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Priscilla Ermel. Origens Da Luz brings together a selection of recordings drawn from a body of work that was originally recorded between 1986 and 1994.Priscilla was raised in a musical family in São Paulo and learned the cello and guitar at an early age. She then embarked on a deeply personal musical journey that would travel from origins rooted in Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque to recording the music of the natural world and the communities around her. A film-maker and anthropologist by training, Priscilla is a lifelong student of a universal music. Disillusioned with contemporary European classical music, she spent long periods living with indigenous populations in Brazil, collecting instruments that she would later combine with synthesizers and field recordings. After studying with the renowned Taoist master Liu Pai Lin, she integrated the slow-moving pace of Tai Chi into a music that connects intimately with a multiplicity of cultures at the same time that it unmistakably reflects her Brazilian soul.Combining sounds drawn from the history of Brazil with her own explorations of analogue sound technology, Priscilla’s music opens up a mystical space, where ancient and modern evolves into a new language. Compiled by John Gómez and released on 2xLP, Origens Da Luz offers a panoramic view of this artist’s unique and mesmerizing sound world.

The Best Of Jicco Funk Vol 1

photo:
a propos:
Possibly the best thing a compilation can do is open the door to a world of music that aside from being unknown to you, is high grade in quality, diverse and open to interpretation in as much as you are left with some if not many questions... particularly when the selected tracks are all from the same record label... When did they start..? Why did they start? Who was behind it? Where did the artists come from? What was their inspiration? These are only a few... by the time you get to the end of the eight tracks included on Jicco Funk Volume One... there may be more...Some background or at least as much as we know: in the early 1970s thru to the 90s, Onitcha was one of Nigeria' most important cities sat on the banks of the river Niger about half way between Benin City and Enugu. Aside from the commerce Onitcha was also an important centre for music production, live music thrived and in turn the city had a nightlife which embraced music... it’s where labels like Tabansi and many other smaller companies had their headquarters. Its where in the late 60’s, the label Jicco was established , an enterprise which would commercialize Kenyan and Congolese music in Nigeria.By the mid to late 70’s Jicco opened itself to new projects, launching a number of sub-labels, from Vox Africa to Guy , more specialized in Highlife , Native and Soukous Music to Jicco Funk which was producing small local groups playing Reggae , Rock and Funk.Dig This Way realised they had found something special after discovering the first few releases on Jicco Funk... its less about a particular style of music and more about a raw emotive production quality that runs through each of the records... there is a mood and feel to the delivery that expresses a consciousness that’s rooted in a deep soul... the origins of which with hindsight would be near impossible to determine... its known that many of the records were produced at the same studio... there are a number of musicians who appear on more than one records... other than a few basic facts... to know the true ingredients which made the blend special... I guess you just had to have been there...Following an extended period collecting music from the label including a number of months in Nigeria trying to trace family and friends of former band members including the Jicco family... Dig This Way decided to produce a compilation highlighting some of the near unknown music released by Jicco Funk... on the first volume in the series the focus is Reggae and Funk, particularly the intersection where the two genres converge as a hybrid production that at times is neither one nor the other... being more often and not... greater than the sum of the parts... hype..? We don't think so... intreguided..?

Agape Love

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Founded by ordained bishop Larry H. Jordan and his brother-in-law Frank Tinsley in the early 1980s, Enlightment was among the first groups to fuse modern R&B production with gospel themes. After providing the group’s ultra-rare debut album Faith Is The Key with a proper release, Nature Sounds is now making another lost classic from Enlightment available to the world. “Agape Love” was a 1988 promo-only 12” single pressed in anticipation of a second Enlightment album, which unfortunately never came to fruition. Previously only available in extremely limited promotional quantities, “Agape Love” has been re-pressed off the original vinyl parts and will now be hitting record shelves worldwide. “This is well-deserved reissue,” says famed DJ and record collector Kon, who calls the record “a lost gem that slipped through the cracks of obscurity.”- First ever commercial release of "Agape Love", pressed off original vinyl parts- Original 1988 promotional copies of this 12" are highly sought-after collectibles- Rare track not included on Enlightment's famed debut album "Faith Is The Key"
