Fantastic Vol. 0

The mark that the late producer J Dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable, and his work with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, and many more has long been cemented in the annals of hip-hop history. It was during his time as a member of seminal Detroit group Slum Village however that ranks as among his greatest. His work with rappers Baatin and T3 would be a strong influence upon modern rappers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and earn widespread critical praise, and comparisons to other legendary groups like A Tribe Called Quest. In speaking retrospectively on their most famous album "Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1", The Roots' drummer Questlove has said of the release that it "single-handedly birthed neo-soul." J Dilla has been gone for over 10 years now, and Slum Village has moved on from their time with the legendary beatsmith, recruiting new members along the way. Despite this, new Dilla compositions are still being discovered, and his legacy continues to be shared and celebrated with a modern hip-hop audience. Ne'Astra Music Group now presents a new compilation of rare Dilla material: Vol. 0. Ten tracks featuring the classic Slum Village lineup of Dilla on vocals and production, with Baatin & T3 also on the mic, collected by modern SV member Young RJ from unreleased material and demos recorded between 1994 and 1997. The knowledgable hip-hop head may recognize key tracks from the circulated EPHCY Sessions, while others have never seen the light of day. A piece of hip-hop history that would have otherwise wallowed in obscurity, until now.

Sadar Bahar & Ben 'Cosmic Force' team up and come correct with these two direct disco jams ... Artwork by Cosmo Knex. The two tracker arose after Sadar Bahar discovered Ben's Utrecht based studio (housing 60 synths!). Electro fiend Ben was charmed by the electronic elements in Sadar's funk and Sadar loved Ben's ideas. Nuff said, a new NL based project was born. Nothing sampled for these tracks... only stabbing guitar, bass, sax and pounding drum programming for dance floor heat!

Digital Reggae

a propos:
Outstanding three track EP from the archives of Caliban (A side project of London musician Milton Myrie; a session guitar player who worked with cult UK buddhist afro and reggae band Ozo as well as on the much sought after Steel and Skin ‘Afro Punk Reggae’ 12”). Talk about bang for ye buck.. 1 side crucial oddball digital cuts, b side sounds like a UK jazz funk classic... Gold Print Sleeve. Caliban produced only one self-released 7” ‘Open Mind / Digital Reggae’ in 1984.Following the re-discovery of this very little known 7” by Caliban a few years back, UK producer Jackson Bailey aka Tapes managed to track Milton down, who as well as being in possession of most of the stock of the original record, was also sat on a number of amazing unreleased recordings from the Caliban sessions. With an album of unreleased Caliban material compiled by Tapes to follow later on Music From Memory, this EP introduces one of the unreleased tracks; the incredible feel good disco anthem “Supernatural”. Taking us on a glittering, rhythm charged rocket tour of the Funk Cosmos, this until-now-unheard future classic will surely set the summer nights alight. The three track 12” also includes “Digital Reggae” which featured on the original Caliban 7”. This computerised dancehall/funk hybrid was partially penned to address the lack of black culture included in the payload of the United States’ first space station; “Digital Reggae will be included in the Payload of Skylab!”. As well as the original mix, the EP also includes a new dub put together by Milton himself and assisted by riddim specialist Tapes!

Space Rapture

a propos:
Reissue from this soul/jazz-funk fusion album originally released in 1982 on Poet Records. 500 copy LTD edition! This sought-after album is an amazing and unique creative project produced and composed by David Eric Tillman including outstanding performances by some of the highest-level musicians whose common thread was their ability to kill up tempo and modal bop and excel in this jazz-funk/fusion style thanks to their up bop think quick knowledge. This gem contains nothing but brilliant tracks like “…Space…Rapture”, “Love Is How”, “New Anniversary Waltz”, “It Must Be E.S.P.” and “(Sing) A Simple Song Of Praise”. Incredible golden lead and backing vocals, a super tight rhythm section, forward thinking arrangements, and an amazing combination of piano, Rhodes and various remarkable synthesizers makes this recording timelessly fresh. The beautiful “Time Is Love”, a tune of positive outlook written during her jazz composition studies, is performed by the one and only Carmen. Killer from the beginning to the end, one of our all-time favorite soul/jazz-funk LPs.Drummer, percussionist, producer and composer Andrew Scott Potter started playing jazz with Malauwi, Fred Anderson and Bill Brimfield in 1968. In addition to his collaboration with David E. Tillman, he has also played with Minnie Riperton, Michael Wolff, Alex Foster, John Scofield, Chip Jackson, Walter Bishop Jr., and Marcus Miller.Pianist, vocalist, composer, producer and arranger David Eric Tillman, notably played with Dadisi Komolafe being featured on his highly sought after Hassan’s Walk LP. He also worked with Malauwi which is how he met Andrew Potter. Together they formed the Poet label and prior to this offering released the sublime “N.Y. To L.A.: Coasting” LP in 1980.Jazz vocalist and composer Carmen Lundy is one of today's most talented and respected jazz singers having performed and recorded with musicians such as Kenny Barron, Ray Barretto, Courtney Pine, Roy Hargrove, Ron Carter, and Robert Glasper. In Harlem NYC in the late 1970s she was also part of a group of emerging young musicians formed by Walter Bishop Jr. with Marcus Miller on bass, Mayra Casales on congas, Ricky Ford on sax, and Kenny Washington on drums who was later replaced by Andrew Potter. Potter fell in love with Carmen’s work and decided to include “Time Is Love” on this album. The rest of the band is no less a dream team: bass player, producer, arranger, composer & vocalist Brad Bobo who wrote & arranged for the Notations, Willie Williams, the Procedures and The Lost Family, also recorded with Eddie Harris, Wilton Felder, The Crusaders and Natalie Cole. Vocalist Lillian Tynes recorded with Donny Hathaway, D.J. Rogers, Norman Connors, Jean Carn and Bobby Womack. Adam Rudolph went on to play and record with Yusef Lateef & Pharoah Sanders. Gary Bias on sax, went on to play with Earth Wind and Fire.

Cosmic Edits

a propos:
Artist Susana Estrada was one of the leading figures of the “Destape” during the late 70s and early 80s, a period in Spain when sexual openness and freedom of thought exploded just when the country was coming out of a dictatorship.Besides acting in lot of movies and musical plays, Susana as a singer also released a few 45s, cassettes and one LP, “Amor y Libertad”, produced by the great Josep Llobell, which is now regarded as a Cosmic Disco classic. From that album, Cosmic Record Store selected two tracks for Side A of this 12”, “Gózame ya” and “Quítate el sostén”. For the B Side, the label has included three edits in a nu-disco & cosmic vein by producers James Rod, Javi Frías and Mr. Absolut aka Sergio Peña.

San Francisco native and modern funk wiz Diamond Ortiz makes his first appearance on Austin Boogie Crew Records with "Goodies", a sweet and enticing 12" EP of quality jams! Coming off the buzz of his acclaimed "Loveline" LP, Diamond takes a slightly more chill but equally party-centric approach on Goodies. This is the first 12" release on ABC and it's fire from front to back!

Ersen 2 - Ömür Biter Yollar Bitmez

auteur:

a propos:
His very last name, Dinleten, means 'listen'. So back to Anatolia once more and hear the unhinged guitar and electric baglama behind Turkish psychedelia's charismatic singer Ersen. He was discovered by Cem, was connected to Mogollar and 3 Hür-El, and even switched backing bands with Cem before finally hitting the charts with his own group Dadaslar. There's loads of B-sides and burly moves on these 70s singles which make his second LP, released in 1978. Wicked funk drums, fuzzy guitars, organs and the poweful voice of Ersen. Includes "Zalim", the killer psych-funk track made famous by the Gaslamp Killer's edit.

Debut album, released in 1977, by one by one of Anatolian Rock's most sheerly talented vocalists.Turkish psych-rock with some amazing funk drums and fuzzed out guitars. Ersen spent time in Mogollar, 3 Hür-El, and Cem Karaca's Kardaslar before cementing his reputation as the frontman of Dadaslar. His voice can range from one that has a soft edge (where he swallows his notes a bit, like a muezzin would), to growling belt-outs that could have fronted any 80s metal act.Ersen and his ever-changing backup band wore Slade haircuts and loud jackets with rainbow pants or silver platform shoes, and they grew their moustaches just as long as the Beatle bangs of their Western counterparts.Get the synth-wizz, funk breaks and fuzzed-out prog riffage behind one of Anatolian Rock's best vocalists!Original gatefold artwork, insert with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records), remastered sound.

Pop Makossa - The Invasive Dance Beat Of Cameroon 1976-1984

photo:
a propos:
The Pop Makossa adventure started in 2009, when Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb first travelled to Cameroon to make an initial assessment of the country’s musical situation. He returned with enough tracks for an explosive compilation highlighting the period when funk and disco sounds began to infiltrate the Makossa style popular throughout Cameroon. So why has it taken almost eight years from that first visit to the final compilation? From the very beginning, there were several mysteries hanging over Pop Makossa. What had happened to Bill Loko, the teenage super-star whose monster hit ‘Nen Lambo’ caused such a sensation that he was forced to flee to the other side of the world? How did bandleader Eko Roosevelt go from Cameroonian prodigy to chief of an idyllic seaside village? And who exactly was Mystic Djim, the dreadlocked producer and mercurial hit-maker whose wizardry on a simple home four-track recorder could outshine even the mighty studios of Cameroon’s National Radio station? It was not until DJ and music producer Déni Shain was dispatched to Cameroon to finalise the project, license the songs, scan photographs, and interview the artists that some of the biggest question marks began to disappear. His journey from the port city of Douala to the capital of Yaoundé brought him in contact with the lives and stories of many of the musicians who had shaped the sound of Cameroon’s dance music in its most fertile decade.Indeed, all the tracks on Pop Makossa are a revelation. The beat that holds everything together has its origins in the rhythms of the Sawa people, Ambassey, Bolobo, Assiko and Essewé, a traditional funeral dance. But it wasn’t until these rhythms arrived in the cities of Cameroon and collided with Merengue, High-Life, Congolese Rumba, and, later, Funk and Disco, that modern Makossa was born.Makossa, the beat that long before football, managed to unify the whole of Cameroon, was successful in part because it was so adaptable. Some of the greatest Makossa hits incorporated the electrifying guitars and tight grooves of funk, while others were laced with cosmic flourishes made possible by the advent of the synthesizer. However much came down to the bass, and from the rubbery hustle underpinning Mystic Djim’s ‘Yaoundé Girls’ to the luminous liquid disco lines which propel Pasteur Lappé’s ‘Sekele Movement’, Pop Makossa demonstrates why Cameroonian bass players are some of the most revered in the world.Yet at the end of it all, there was still one final mystery facing the production team at Analog Africa: how was this compilation of amazing sounds from Cameroon going to begin? After many month and hundreds of different running orders, something still didn’t seem to click … until one day they came across a mighty song entitled ‘Pop Makossa Invasion,’ recorded for Radio Buea, a tune so obscure that even in Cameroon it had never been released. Suddenly the whole compilation fell into place. ‘Pop Makossa Invasion’ makes its debut here and joins the pantheon of extraordinary songs that plugged Cameroon’s Makossa style into the modern world.
