I Got Soul : Blaxploitation Mood

photo:
a propos:
"I Got Soul " Blaxploitation Mood" - Is the first Soul Music compilation from 'Playoff Records'. Inspired by the Blaxploitation movies, the aim is to showcase tracks taken from these films, as well as other lesser known ones that could easily feature in any movie soundtrack. The 70's follow the troubled period of the civil rights movement and the struggle against segregation. The Afro-American community is searching for new heroes, some they found in music and cinema.Musically we enter a crossroads period, where the vintage R&B sound is gradually replaced by more sophisticated productions (Johnnie Taylor, David Porter…). Artistic creativity is freer and more diverse, this is apparent on these two covers. By using the group 'Undisputed Truth', the producer Norman Whitfield regenerates a piece by British group 'Hot Chocolate'. The addition of wah wah guitars from the version by 'Creative Source' takes this Bill Wither's song to another level. Artists like the "Godfather" James Brown explore a new groove, introducing a drum kick that will become the essence of funk and go on to influence others like 'Sweet' Charles Sherrel & Sir Joe Quaterman. Millie Jackson perpetuates the southern mood in this song, the profound lyrics address social issues . Whereas the Jackson Sisters gave birth to what some consider as one of the first ever Disco cuts. Willie Hutch and Bobby Womack remind us that a song can be both groovy and melodic. Curtis Mayfield brings this selection to an end with his influence as producer with the group 'The Notations', songwriter of this punchy cover version from the 'Sisters Love' and finally performing his all time classic 'Superfly'

Christians Catch Hell: Gospel Roots 1976-79

photo:
a propos:
Utterly magnificent, sublimely soulful survey of the Gospel Roots label, subsidiary of the mighty TK Records at the height of the Miami Sound.A&R was co-ordinated by Gospel legends Ira Tucker — from the Dixie Hummingbirds — and Ralph Bass, veteran producer with Savoy, King and Chess. The label was run by Timmy Thomas, who had recently smashed with Why Can’t We Live Together, for another TK spin-off, Glades. Operations were overseen by Henry Stone himself, unlikely King of Disco, who had recorded a young Ray Charles, and pushed forward James Brown. They drew in artists from all over the US, from St. Louis, Columbus, Memphis, Brooklyn, Cabrini Green in Chicago: unknowns like Camille Doughty, reluctant to jeopardise her job at GM (‘Generous Motors’) in Detroit, and huge-sellers like the revered Brooklyn All Stars, who started out on Peacock in 1958.Choral belters, deep ballads, harmony quartets, epic city-blues, gritty funk, powerhouse female soul… Killer-diller Philly like a scorching version of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes’ Wake Up Everybody; and Jean Austin’s raw Spirit Free, co-written by Ronnie Dyson, produced by Jesse James at Future Gold. Chicago Sound like The Fantastic Family Aires — named after the family’s furniture store on North Cicero, but reminiscent of the Staple Singers at their best — through to the full-blown glory of The Fountain Of Life Joy Choir, led by Marvin Yancy from The Independents, and featuring Natalie Cole… Singers like Versie Mae Gibson, from the Jordans, by rights up there with Irma, Etta and Ree… Bangers 100%-guaranteed to find their way into Theo Parrish sets; and mortal delirium for the prissiest of soul and gospel purists.Beautifully presented, with a 12”-square, full-colour, sixteen-page booklet of photos and original artwork — and truly outstanding notes, including insightful new interviews across the board; mastered at Abbey Road.

Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds Vol 2

photo:
a propos:
Just one year after the release of Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds’ compilation, Favorite Recordings presents the 2nd edition of its acclaimed series. At the control this time is French DJ and producer Charles Maurice, digging again in his collection and travelling to Brazil for the occasion in order to find some local hidden treasures. The result comes as nine additional obscure hits from the Brazilian Funk-Boogie-Disco scene during the years of 1977 to 1984.At that time musicians and arrangers such as Lincoln Olivetti, Robson Jorge, and Oberdan Magalhães along with Banda Black Rio were responsible for the new music scene. They’d dominated the studios with sophisticated and original arrangements that have forever transformed Brazilian musical. This music, at that point, had gained a new style and great international respect that has remained still.Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds Vol.2 pays tribute to this great era, coming out in a deluxe vinyl edition with old-school tip-on jacket, including notes and original artworks.

Limited 12" repressA modern Boogie affair. slick and very well turned out three piece ep which could easily have been rescued from 1/4 inch tape tucked away in some early 80's mid-western recording studio We're firmly in PPU territory as the drum machines snap and the funk fuelled bass lines underpin those classic verse / chorus constructions & Soul melodies albeit in dub form Sasac nails the vibe down perfectly with an uplifting jam that rolls along like an endless Pacific coast highway On the flip Witch Doctor's 'Inner Vision' is a smooth and seriously addictive mid-tempo workout, while Golden Ivy wraps it all up with some expertly laid out Dam Funkery

Box Aus Holz, over the course of a handful of very special releases quietly worked their way into the dancers hearts and the DJ's charts. A steady supply of loose, hook heavy and beautifully crafted sample jams have really set the label apart. We're very happy to see them return, with this, their eighth release.Another Various Artists selection, ranging from typically irresistible Sample-House (from wunderkind Glenn Astro & Joschka Seibt & DJ mettigel) to smoked out, neck snappin' MPC workouts, via deftly crafted Madlib flavours.100% quality cuts all the way.

Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds

photo:
a propos:
Here's something of a treat for disco diggers: an essential collection of little-known, hard-to-find and downright essential Brazilian disco and boogie. Put together by Brazilian digger Junior Santos, Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds is full of must-have material, from the familiar bounce and punchy horns of the Teena Marie-ish "Moral Tem Hora" from Cristina Camargo, to the sweet shuffle and carnival-friendly swing of Carlos Dafe's "Escorpiao". With quality material throughout picking highlights is tough, though we're particularly fans of the jazz guitar-laden boogie of Famks' "Labrinto" and Sandra De Sa's thrilling "Negra Flor".

Caribbean Disco Boogie Sounds

photo:
a propos:
8 rare & obscure gems from the Caribbean territories, selected by Waxist !It’s now pretty obvious that Disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. It has also influenced musicians all around the world, from France to Brasil, as Favorite Recordings proved it with the previous volumes of the "Disco Boogie Sounds" compilations. West-Indies islands are no exception to the rule.Indeed, at that time in the Caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their US counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. Besides, the important size of the Caribbean diaspora in the US, Canada, or in the UK, has certainly played a huge role in making those two musical worlds meet. At the end, West-Indies Islands have not only tried to reproduce US dance hits locally, they also bred their own version of Disco.Apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts ("Trinidad" by John Gibbs to name one), very few was known on these productions until recently. Most of it has remained obscure, being only played by a handful of record collectors & DJs. Having grown up for most of my childhood and teenager years in a small island from the Indian Ocean, I was immersed in the “sun & sand” vibes at an early age, which helped molding my musical tastes. If the sound of the Caribbean Islands is very different from the Indian Ocean's one, it’s anyway no surprise that I have been attracted quickly by the West-Indies’ 70s music productions, as a DJ and record collector. From an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, Favorite Recordings and I teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. With no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality Caribbean Disco/Boogie tunes. It will take you to various places like Virgin Islands, Jamaica, or Trinidad, as well as a couple of Western major cities, where West-Indies diaspora is strong (New York, London). The soundtrack of this journey goes from Disco/Rap sounds, with the obscure "Macho Man" by Eddie & The Movement, to weird Afro-Disco/Funk influenced songs, such as “My African Religion” by Jamaican singer Paul Hurlock. Also featured here are a couple of personal secret weapons such as instrumental "Bermuda Triangle" by Musicism, or "Going to the Party" by Barry Bryson.Favorite Recordings & Waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.
