Kouté Jazz

a propos:

Private Wax Vol 2

photo:
a propos:
BBE and ZafLoveVinyl team up again for Private Wax Vol. 2 - Super Rare Boogie & Disco.Obsessive collector, record store owner and mine of musical knowledge, Zaf is vinyl junkie of the highest order. His first 'Private Wax' compilation came in 2012 and immediately became a highly sought after gem, due to the rare and wonderful disco and boogie contained within.Owning the world’s premiere website for rare records (http://www.zafsmusic.com) and counting Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay among his customers allows Zaf a near superhuman selection of music to choose from, so anyone worried that he might have used up all his best tunes on Volume 1 can relax. From the shimmering Disco of Starvue’s ‘Love Affair’, which opens up the album, right through to the uplifting last track, Wes Black’s ‘I Feel Good’, it’s clear we are in the hands of a master curator. Containing only original versions, literally thousands of pounds’ worth of rare records have been lovingly re-mastered to build this very special package. With the current disco and funk revival making headway into the charts, this compilation of authentic, original material could not be timelier. From dance-floor oriented disco monsters to more subtle boogie jams, the album takes the listener on a journey from the nightclub to the streets of 70’s and 80’s Black America, where the early experimental blueprint for hip hop and house can clearly be heard in so much of the music.A slice of history, but also a collection of tracks that still have so much mileage left in them, we invite you to dive once again into the magical world of Zaf’s Private Wax.

The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul

photo:
a propos:
Greg Caz and Deano Sounds have teamed up once again to bring you another fine package of vintage Brazilian music. This one stretches across the scope of funk, soul, and psychedelic music from Brazil. Some highlights include: the extremely rare and funky “Labirinto” by 2001 & Beto, the blistering psychedelic funk of Antônio Carlos & Jocafi’s “Quem Vem Lá,” the essential rare groove track “Bananeira” by Emilio Santiago, Osmar Milito E Quarteto Forma’s rare “América Latina” sampled by Madlib, Tom Zé’s unstoppable riff on “Jimmy, Renda-Se,” and many others. Here are some words on the project from co-compiler and Brazilian music aficionado, Greg Caz:“Without necessarily having a central theme other than funky nuggets from the first half of the 70s, we believe this compilation displays its own particular sense of logic, and that these songs ultimately all sound fantastic together. Regardless of one’s familiarity, or lack thereof, with artists like Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, Os Incríveis, Toni Tornado or Celia, the material on these 45s speaks its own truth and justifies their inclusion here. Many of these were originally available as singles, while others were taken from albums, but all are guaranteed to find their way into many DJ boxes and playlists.” The 45 box set version comes in a durable glossy case with 7 x 45s, a poster containing the original artwork for the album, a booklet filled with imagery from the original artists and releases and liner notes by Greg Caz, the “Mad Scientist of Brazilian Beats.”

The Sleeping Bag Records Anthology

photo:
a propos:
The third Sources package comes from one perhaps one of the most radical of the New York underground independent labels in several different areas - Avant-Garde, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap and Freestyle, so welcome to the one and only Sleeping Bag Records from New York. Founded in 1981 by the Avante-Garde musician Arthur Russell together with Will Socolov and Juggy Gayles, the label kicked off with the seminal 'Go Bang!' by Dinosaur L aka Arthur Russell and quickly established itself with further dancefloor smashes from Class Action, the Jamaica Girls and Konk among others. However undoubtedly one of Sleeping Bag's most significant signings would turn out to be producer extraordinaire Kurtis Mantronik, who, with rapper MC Tee under the name Mantronix, would produce many of the most cutting-edge Hip-Hip/Rap and Electro classics of the 1980s including 'Needle To The Groove', 'Ladies', 'Bassline' and 'Who Is It', all of which are included here as well as producing a brace of international smash hits for Joyce Sims including the electro-funk masterpiece '(You Are My) All & All' and the super-slinky 'Come Into My Life'. Sleeping Bag would remain at the forefront of dance music culture with numerous other significant dance-floor smashes from the likes of Tricky Tee, Felix, Nocera, Dhar Braxton and Kariya’s brilliant 'Let Me Love For Tonight' among many others. In many ways Sleeping Bag exemplified the perfect New York independent label of the 1980s with its shrewd A&R philosophy and an interesting balance of staff who were divided between old music industry veterans together with a brace of young keen new inductees who kept the label close to the streets - a winning combination all round. Out of all the labels featured in the Sources series, Sleeping Bag was the most consistently successful in its era and was undoubtedly the label which was the most hardwired into the sensibilities of the times. This is the most comprehensive anthology available of one of the greatest independent record labels of the 1980s.
