Natureza

Favorite Recordings proudly presents Natureza, first album of Joao Selva. The story of Natureza is made of the meeting between two passionate artists who are Jonathan "Matuto" Da Silva and Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart.Born and raised in Ipanema and son of a pastor, Jonathan Da Silva grew up in a community of ex-prisoners and converted artists. He made his first guitar notes before his 10th birthday, under the watchful eye of Wanda Sa (muse of the bossa nova), and influenced by a father who in addition to his work, was also a true music lover with a collection, where black music, rock and classical meet. From the age of 18, Jonathan began a life of entertainer, traveling the world to offer shows for disadvantaged children and intensively practicing the Brazilian traditional music arts (Capoeira Angola, Maracatu, Samba de Roda, Coco de Roda...). It was later in France and in Lyon that he put down his instruments. There he formed the trio Forro de Rebeca in 2008, touring the all country and winning many praise in media. The trio recently joined forces with American producer Maga Bo on the project Sociedade Recreativa, whose album was released in 2016 on The Jarring Effects label.Bruno Hovart is a recognized producer, multi-instrumentalist, and remixer. After passing through Angers, Birmingham and London, he’s based in Lyon since 2001. Bassist and guitarist for various bands, he switched to production in the mid-90s. Passionate about music and tireless creator, Bruno has practiced in almost every imaginable style, when it comes to groove music, collecting many aliases and projects for more than 10 years: Patchworks, Voilaaa, Uptown Funk Empire, Mr President, Taggy Matcher, Mr. Day, Hawa, John Milk, Lightnin 3, The Dynamics or Metropolitan Jazz Affair ... Nothing resists and escapes his talent and production skills. Thus, when he discovered and met Jonathan and his music, Bruno saw an immediate opportunity to broaden the spectrum of his discography a little more, by looking at Brazil.Beyond its traditional heritage, Brazil has always been a land of extremely varied music, influenced by the international scene. Soul, Jazz and American Pop did inspire many local stars such as Chico Buarque, Carlos Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, or Erasmo Carlos. Both fervent lovers of this movement and these names, it’s with the idea to pay them a faithful tribute, that Jonathan and Bruno began the Joao Selva adventure. Together they gave birth to Natureza and embark us for a trip into the heart of the Tropicalist Pop influences of Jorge Ben and Caetano Veloso, the intoxicating Funk of Tim Maia, and the social poetry of Vinicius de Moraes.

Time To Decide

auteur:

a propos:
Favorite Recordings proudly presents Time to Decide, The first album by Al Sunny.Al Sunny is a young composer emerging from the French soul music scene. Soon after learning the guitar, he started composing and became involved in numerous projects and collaborations. Al has been influenced by pop, rock, and electronic music, always with a foundation in the “Black” and “Soul” sound.During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. The will to establish himself on a solo project became stronger and stronger. He quickly discovered deep inside himself the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Thru his guitar, he gives birth to the majority of his compositions and always seeks to bring the melody of his songs to the forefront. During his studies he met musicians including Florian Pellissier, then professor at the conservatory and a confirmed pianist who worked on various projects such as Guts, Anthony Joseph, Florian Pellissier Quintet, and Shola Adissa. It's then thanks to Florian that Al Sunny meets Pascal Rioux, founder and A&R of Favorite Recordings. Immediately seduced and impressed by his talent and the various demos that he listened to, Pascal invites the young musician to collaborate and produce an album within Favorite Recordings. Together they agree on a musical direction looking towards the West coast movement of the 70s and 80s. This direction includes influences like Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and Ned Doheny, of whom Al Sunny covers the classic “Get It Up For Love” on the new album. With Time To Decide, Al Sunny shows us the premise of his music style, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk. Written and composed by himself, it’s in close collaboration with Florian Pellissier that his songs came to life. Under the guidance of Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings, the production of this album ensures a sound and a final result worthy of the best classics of the genre.

Henry Thomas low key 45 on Raptown records has until now been a featured in the record boxes of Deep Boogie and Two Step Dj's who know the deal, it's now time for it to spread its FM synth wings to bigger dancefloors. What more do you want, a SOLID two sider that only slipped through eBay a few times on the cheap as people did not know it, managed to bag one of those myself and with some help from a good friend track Henry down, alive, well and looking forward to his music getting a revival.

Bobby Hammiltons band Anibus only managed to released this single extremely collectable deep Spiritual funk 45, the single didn't gain the movement they hopes and the bands went their separate ways leaving this one amazing 7 inch reproduced here. Bobby is still alive and well so lets put things right and get things right and get this record on the turntable, a truly classy, deep and mindful 45.

Super Black/Everyday People

photo:
a propos:
One of the rarest funk 45s in existence and the rarest 45 on Ellis Taylor's Forte label flipped with a previously unreleased acetate (has a little bit of background noise but what you gonna do when there is only one copy in the world, we did out best to make it sound good and it does). Both tracks are stone cold Deepfunk killers. Super Black is from the tapes and sounds amazing (better than the original) so go destroy a club with this.

Brazilian Rhyme

photo:
a propos:
Huge, The full unreleased version of the o.g bboy classic 'Brazilian Rhyme' straight out the Sony tape vaults ( I made that sound easier than it was). Not just one for hip-hop heads, the appreciation of this groove is pretty much universal. The track is an uncredited cover of Toninho Horta's "Beijo Partido" most likely directly influenced by Milton Nascimentos version from the LP Minas which is a great cheap LP while we are on that. On the flip for the first time on 45 (until someone tells me there is some random German or Thai pressing) is one of my old modern spins, best 45 of the year and its only March.

Flying/Where Do I Begin?

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Profusion (noun): an abundance of something rich. What a deftly fitting description for the collaborative project between K15 and Emeson. This talented duo hooked up back in the days of MySpace. A future of combining their skills was always inevitable, and in 2017, it's finally time to unleash their united sonics out into the ether. The solo-projects of Tottenham-raised Kieron Ifil (aka K15) date back a decade, but were truly kick-started on labels such as Kyle Hall's Wild Oats and also on WotNot Music, with an abundance of genre-crossing releases dropping ever since, taking in sounds from jazz, soul, hip hop, house, techno and broken beat. Additionally to his production work (also releasing under the moniker Culross Close), he has established himself internationally as a DJ, with prior residencies at the world famous Jazz Cafe, and his WU15 project (along with Yussef Kamaal's Henry Wu) on Alex Nut's Eglo Records, cementing his rightful status as part of London's now-school.Partner in Profusion, Emeson, has many skills to his bow - singing, songwriting, producing, promoting, DJing (under the alias Ed Nice) and acting, appearing across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, to name but a few. As a musician, his varied skill-set has seen him work with Chico Hamilton, Carla Duke, Karmasound, Uzo Madu and Chris Jerome. A frontman for soul-jazz groups LifeSize, The One and Saturn's Children, he has featured on releases for BBE and Tokyo Dawn, and appeared live on stage at the likes of Ronnie Scott's. A truly formidable talent. We set it off with this double-header of heat; 'Flying' and 'Where Do I Begin'. Sun-soaked synths drift across the warmest of basslines and neck-snapping beats. Emeson's rich vocals gracefully ride atop of K15's delectably bruk twist on neo-soul sonics, this is seriously classy contemporary London soul music. As highly suited for laidback cruising as they are for heads-down sweaty dancefloors, as proven triumphantly when debuted at the closer of the recent Co-Op 'Selectors Assemble' dance. Both tracks are killer and we hope give you a good flavour of what's to come.Profusion - an abundance of something rich indeed. A project that embodies an array of everything that is great about British black music. Be ready.

Na Man Pass Man

photo:
a propos:
Following on from the Pasteur Lappe compilation "African Funk Experimentals" LP, we are really pleased to be re-visiting Pasteur with a repress of his second album from 1979, "Na Man Pass Man". The story begins in the 60s with a charming 19 year old Nicolas "Pasteur" Lappe becoming a sensation on Radio Adele in Douala, Cameroun. He goes on to become the editor of the Douala Gazette newspaper and become friends with other African music stars such as Tala AM, J Moboule and Fela Kuti. He also works tirelessly promoting new and upcoming local Cameroonian talent. After moving to Paris, a stint in journalism school and publishing a book of poems "Chansons Negres" he finally settles into a new life of music in Paris. His second album "Na Man Pass Man" is made in 1979 with the backing band and production collective called the Zulu Gang, which include Douglas Mbida (who went on to release several top flight albums himself) and Jacob Desvariaux (who went on to form Kassav). The album is full of diverse sounds; from driving funk, sweeping disco grooves, syrupy ballads, reggae, Jackson-five-esque pop to finger-lickin' soul. At its core though is the custom "Sekele" groove... a movement to encompass the dance, grooves and vibes from his native Douala. The album opens with Africa Seven favourite "Na Real Sekele Fo' Ya" which takes stabby moog bass synth to a whole new level of grooviness. "Follow Me To My Dreams" takes proceedings on a reggae tip as the Zulu Gang show us just how Reggae they can go. Its sleezy Rhodes and sax led jazz funk of "Mbale". Followed by "Missosi" a cautionary tale from our hero. Side B opens with another slice of slick African Reggae with "Babette D'O (Rastawoman)" – the Caribbean chops of Jacob Desvariaux getting a full exercise here. Its then "Back To Funky" with some dance funk. It features Maryse Lappe guesting on vocals too. The "Lead" track from the album "ABC" is next with its stomping afro, pop funk delightfulness. A 12" version was actually released in 1979 with a fine painting of our hero on the front cover. We close off the LP with the title track "Na Man Pass Man (Na Iron De Cut)". This features Pasteur singing and professing his tale of the trials of Africans and African Music over a rolling bass guitar groove. The nostalgic poet, with Africa at his essence Pasteur Lappe, we salute you.
