Strange Things (1970-1974)

Eccentric soul and funk recordings from an unlikely crew of Los Angeles musical misfits – including psych-rock cult figure John Greek (Reachin’ Arcesia, Beautiful Daze) and members of the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band. They had a catchy, but inappropriate name: there is nothing forthcoming about Los Angeles’ 4th Coming, unless one counts a copious amount of releases – on rare 7” singles – that didn’t sell farther than vocalist/principal Henry “Hank” Porter’s Datsun 1200 could take him. When 4th Coming records surfaced in the '90s, they were often disregarded as novelty. And some of their records were so rare that it took until the late ‘00s for them to reemerge, after the sinking of their initial pressing runs. Assembling a complete set of 4th Coming recordings was nearly impossible, until the issue of this, the lost 4th Coming album. At its core, the 4th Coming was a songwriting duo – Porter and Jechonias “Jack” S. Williams – and a rotating cast of musicians – including members of lauded LA funk ensemble the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band - that Williams assembled at Artist Recording Studio to realize the pair’s ideas. They existed only from the latter half of 1969 until 1974, during that time they issued eight singles as 4th Coming and one as Impact! on Al Firth's Alpha imprint. And now, Strange Things, a thrilling listen, a mysterious trove of recordings made possible by an open minded and well-funded indie impresario, which document a very real and very weird Los Angeles of the past. It’s a city we’ll never know again, and one that might never again produce an ensemble like the 4th Coming. If Firth’s faith only rolled snake-eyes in terms of commercial success, in terms of documenting Los Angeles’ vibrant soul and funk underground, he rolled boxcars. This, the album Williams and Firth always hoped would bring them real success, now sees its complete release and allows us to ponder the might-have and the would-have beens – had a 4th Coming album come together in the mid-‘70s.

Perhaps it's something in the water or just plain vodka, we really have no idea but one thing is for sure - there's something special about those Moscow disco heads. They sure know how to find a perfect beat and re-edit it to perfection. After Lay-Far it's now time for Arsenii to step into the Basic Fingers arena. Both sides on this 12 are filled with Jazz-Funk and library infused disco at its best. 'Allegria' sounds like Bob James is jamming with The Headhunters and on the flip 'Turbo' with its generous use of synthesizers almost has an outer space theme.Essential indulgence for disco heads & connoisseurs everywhere.

Individually hand-numbered limited edition of 400 on black vinyl (101-500/500).Comes with a double-sided paper insert (29,7x29,7 cm. 170 gr./m2) including artwork and lyrics.Archeo Recordings is a reissue record label that regenerates old, lost, obscure (and forgotten) rare gems of Italian music of the 70s and 80s, and not only. All outputs are licensed by the artists and the vintage labels; audio tracks are remastered in their original form; the sleeves and center labels are graphically recreated for today but all based on the original images.Archeo would like to make the music available to a wider audience of collectors, DJs, music lovers of a forgotten time. All releases are hand-numbered limited edition vinyl. The first 100 copies of each release are pressed in coloured vinyls. This release is individually 500 hand-numbered limited edition. The first 100 copies are pressed on GREEN vinyls (AR003). "Safari of love" is bloody unique, a true visionary oddity, filled with strange breaks, sound design, mumbling voices, crazy pre-acid echoes bouncing everywhere, and majestic, typically italian-OST strings and keyboards. This epic space jam hit where it hurts and showed no mercy. Beyond evil production by Allan Goldberg (producer/arranger for Santo, Slang, Azoto, Gaznevada) with Vince Tempera killing it on keys, you can't go wrong on this drugged out monster! This sounds next level even now, you can only imagine what it must have sounded like in 1977, a mighty beast that kicks the discoball out of the stratosphere!

Two unreleased disco funk bangers from Joe Tex backing band THE SECOND RE$$URRECTION. Dug out from Sonny Cravers Stanson Records archive, The band did release one ultra rare disco/modern 45 which goes for $3000+ all day long also coming to Athens of the north soon. One of the most widely travelled, widely heard unknown groups in the world. A band of serious Funk musicians who have shared the stage with the elite of the elite. They have shared the stage with Jean Carne, Boston, Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, Rufus & Chaka Khan, The Isley Brothers, Shalamar, Tavares, Rufus Thomas, Tyrone Davis, Barbara Lynn, Millie Jackson, The Brothers Johnson, B.T. Express, Brick, Frank Lucas, The Drifters & Blue Magic. They won equal acclaim when they played alongside Earth, Wind & Fire at The CBS Family Affair. They performed at New York's Rialto Theatre, The Apollo, and toured East and West Germany. They performed for the movie premier of Rudy Ray Moore's, Petey Wheatstraw - The Devil's Son-In-Law at Chicago's Regal Theatre. The original name of the group was THE SIX DEGREES SOUTH (A Very rare funk45 I released when working at Jazzman Records) based out of Lawton Oklahoma. A nomadic group, they completed a 3 year trek primarily booked at military bases across the nation. They also played a variety of college and university towns, ski-lodges, various clubs and hotel ballrooms. They initially dabbled in recording producing a vinyl 45' single entitled, Loving You Is Too Far Out. Upon returning to home-base the group met the legendary soul singer, Joe Tex. Being into funk, we were not all that familiar with his soul sound. He explained what he wanted to do and the end results of what could be accomplished. The band, already being self-contained and autonomous seized the opportunity to utilize not only Tex's fame in the music/radio world but his label connections. Unknowingly, this group almost single-handedly launched Tex's career back into the spotlight allowing him to re-emerge and re-invent himself after a 5 year sabbatical. They played, wrote and produced-in-part Joe Tex's Bumps & Bruises album containing the mega-hit, Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman. This culminated into Tex's first gold album, won a Grammy nomination and was #86 on Billboard's 1978 year-end chart. On the flip side the bands own LP was shelfed after the single "Smoke in the Disco" did not live up to Stansons Records expectations, as these things go it later became a huge modern/northern soul record and is coveted by collectors all over the world, so lets share a bit more of the Lost LP...,.

Let's Do It Today (Procrastination)/Peace

auteur:

photo:
a propos:
Western Michigan had a very healthy music scene throughout the '60s and '70s, with Georgia-born soul legend Jackey Beavers (aka Jackie Beavers) and producer Palmer James forging that area's soul identity. Beavers produced the recording by this obscure band from Battle Creek and issued their only 45 on his Jaber label. The rhythm section of Wright, Teasley and Scurlock were better known as Jr. Walker's All Star group, and they made this recording shortly before leaving the bandleader's ranks. The Us would share ties with the Apachies (track 20), for both bands included at some point members of Jr Walker's All Stars. Trombonist Jack Hill would be involved in both bands and would help create the unique arrangement on 'Let's Do It Today.' Bassist Larry Scurlock recounts the origin behind the song's theme, "We were ready to get on with it. No draggin' around, let's do this now, today is the day! I've lived this motto for all of my life."The full-length version here shows The Us head into psychedelic regions in the final minutes of the song that have never been heard since they were recorded over 30 years ago. "I wrote it in less than half a day to get some royalties" remembers Scurlock. "We were experimenting with tuning, a quarter tone below the note. We were sure under the influence back in those days!"Recorded 1969 at Midwestern Sound Studios, Grand Rapids, MIProduced by Jackey BeaversArranged by Jack HillPersonnel - Doug Cassens (tenor sax), Philip Wright (guitar, vocals), Larry Scurlock (bass, vocals), Jerome Teasley (drums)Unreleased full version of this rare 45 for the first time.Cut from tape to lathe by the masters at Timmion Cutting Lab.

First time I heard this track out was D.Jing with Adrian Gibson, booker/manager for the London Jazz Cafe in its hay day in the early 2000s, i thought it was some crazy obscusre early Jacksons 45. I had no idea what it was but i liked it and it stuck with me. As my eyes were on 45's at the time it passed me by until Numero Group reissued it on their fabulous 'Soul Messengers' compilation (essential purchase if you don't own). After quite a bit of badgering Rob Sevier, Co-owner of Numero Group, let this grace my format of choice, so here we are, both sides first outing as a single. Essential

Imagenes Recordings is proud to present the latest dancefloor Jazz groover of Andre Espeut Quintet. Its been a few of years now years since the first two releases of the Quintet, which has had an incredible response from many radio shows in the Uk and overseas, including Craig Charles, Jazz FM, Patrick Forge between others. This follow up continues the story of an endless amalgamation of Jazz & Blues, which keeps swinging through the musical landscape of today after almost six decades of its origins. This ain't how it ends:A mans journey into brighter things as he talks about the challenges of life, with an optimistic outcome. From Ray Charles to Gregory Porter the influences are well rooted here in this song.Cut loose:Takes traditional Brazilian styles with finely crafted Jazz compositions and arrangements of Bossa Nova-infused Jazz, perfectly capturing the mood of summer vibes with rich vocals.

The Glass City

photo:
a propos:
Following an acclaimed appearance on People's Potential Unlimited, Pender Street Steppers return home to Mood Hut with two chunks of willfully loose, dusty and picturesque analogue deep house gems. "Glass City" is superb, with fluttering synthesized horns and becalmed horns gracefully stretching out over a typically sparse but jazzy rhythm and a warm-to-touch bassline. They go even deeper and slower on the flip, with "Golden Garden" delivering pitched-down beats, unfeasibly dreamy, stretched-out chords, and oodles of well-placed dub delay. It's not so much new age house, as the most blazed deep house track you'll hear all year. And, yes, it's also superb.
